Found your channel because RUclips 'gently' pushed the Segmented Displays video out to a lot of people. Instantly got hooked, watched several of your previous videos etc. I am amazed at how you manage to create a work of art out of nearly any subject. This felt like the weirdest mix of a documentary for children, and hardcore partical and light physics. Some of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen. Absolutely incredible video!

Not only are your narrations great but this photography is utterly stunning, you must have one hell of a setup with cameras and lenses.
Rare gems on YT where content is original, same with music, explanation matches both theoretical and practical physics - I think its the firs time someone actually blurred the waves in a visualization to show the probability of the wave propagation - remarkable!

I have been turned off by the recent overuse of obvious stock footage being used by almost all creators now. I understand it’s easier and won’t knock anyone for using it, but it takes me out of it

I've always loved staring into my tea and seeing the turbulence, and wondering what was going on there. You've explained it in such a wonderful way. Also, I can imagine the leading TV manufactures could use this imagery for showing off their new screens on the showroom floor, among the birds of paradise and other such full spectrum footage!

3:05 if you want to know more about these patterns that happen on the bottom of the bowl (or a swimming pool) because of density variations, or ripples on the surface of the water, they're called "caustics". They're interesting as well as hypnotic.

The way you record and edit your videos in such a smooth and unique fashion makes them feel more than just videos, but more like whole experiences.
Iridescence is also seen in clouds; diffraction by similarly-sized cloud droplets can create a corona/airy disk/aureole when a point light source like the sun, moon, or a street light goes through it. The smaller the water droplets, the bigger the illusory “airy disk.” I see these very often in fog or clouds of all kinds.
Yeah, I read about cloud irisation in a book about atmospheric optic phenomena and unfortunately never saw one yet. Just standard 22° halos and rainbows time to time, meh.

To see an airy disk, best to watch when the full moon goes through thin clouds. You might see a white halo with an orange edge. That is an airy disk. (aureole)

Fascinating! If the droplets have an electrostatic charge, it should be possible to manipulate them with a strong electric field no? As a physics student I should be able to get access to do such an experiment. Might be worth a shot. Could you share the papers you discussed in the video?

I believe I’ve seen certain practical demonstrations using a fine mist (such as from an ultrasonic atomiser) and electromagnets (like speaker coils) to visualise a repeating sound like a synthesised note and get a standing wave (but I can’t remember where I’ve seen this so perhaps I’m imagining it, but if it does indeed exist it is separate from mechanical waveform induction which is more commonly seen).

I absolutely love this video. I saw the music video some time ago and tried to recreate it with the steps from the description. I am a little disappointed you didn't show us visually how to create the "perfect" light conditions and how you film macro!
Maybe he utilized polarized light for this footage? I know that many crystals, gems and minerals can look very different in polarized light. For example, diamonds can look quite dazzling in non-polarized light, but appear to be relatively dull and uninteresting in polarized light. Conversely, many common and normally plain looking gems and crystals take on a far more beautiful appearance in polarized light.
@@jacobforsman3897 Soon I will make a set up with a polarising light source or polarising filter on the camera. or both. The background should be black for good contrast. The direction of the light source might be important as well.

Very mesmerizing to watch. All of those close-up scenes remind me of something you might find in a music video or in the background of a commentary or documentary video when they don't want a blank screen. Or better yet, an animated desktop background. I could watch them all day

Posy, ever since I saw the “Every sound is SINE” video, I was impressed by the amount of quality and production value of the video. Your voice is also very great for narration. All of your other narration/documentary and music videos are great, especially this video. I liked how when I was a kid, I saw random puddles, and they would rarely produce little rainbows. This video gave quite a bit of nostalgia. Keep up the great work, 10/10.

Yoooo this video basically taps into an awesome phenomena called: tetracrhomacy. Its like a simulatoon of how having that is like. For those of you that dont know… tetrachromacy is like reverse color blindness. You can see way more color nuances than an average person and theres is only one person in the world whos a verified tetrachromat. Youre also more sensitive to already existing nuances so they pop out way more. In this sense this video is a masterpiece because it literally gives us insight into a whole other world… one that many animals like bees, birds etc experience. Youve made us transcend our humanity dude, just in this video alone. Holy fuck

What an incredible film! I have so many questions. How do you film the droplets? Around what temperature does the iridescence start on the surface? Do you have a vocal coach/vocal training?
It seems to be roughly in the range of 50°±10 but that may be innaccurate as the setup is daunting. The opacity of the drink is to make it easier to see while looking at the drink itself, either on the surface or at the steam, but you can also use a dark object to help see the steam above the vessel. You have to have the right low angle of incident light -- preferably a parallel source, or a point source from slightly futher away, but it can also work from a closer point source if it is shadowed into a smaller zone. My point source I point up at the steam from behind the vessel, which is not odeal. But the setup in the video is not well documented well, except the passing mention about the morning sun, which is in the abstract of the Nature paper (it is called Dynamics of microdroplets over the surface of hot water). I believe evening sun would also work, but not sure what angle of morning they were looking at. Though windows facing the sun directly are rarer due to the heating effect of the sun.
