@@superduperfreakyDj - Actually, the monks will produce according to the needs of the abbey and its occupants. Need a new roof? Production will be increased to cover the costs. Need to pay for expensive medical needs of several monks and the abbey’s till will mean that in addition to other costs it’ll stretch the budget? Brew a little more. Need to do extensive landscaping/rewire the electrics of the abbey to keep them up to code/new vehicles because the old ones broke down/contribute to a particularly worthy charity? Brew some extra. Whilst the monks do live frugally, they do not believe it means they should live without dignity or allow the abbey to fall into disrepair. They won’t turn themselves into a worldwide behemoth of a charitable institution either. They keep things as simple as possible and stick to their own devices as much as possible. But neither do they believe that they should be a burden on society. Self sufficiency is part of who and what they are as an order.
Anywhoo, that’s why you’ll see occasional greater releases via other outlets than just the abbey’s point of sales. Once the needs are met, production is scaled down again.

There are only 11 monastery's left in the world that still make authentic Trappist beer , 6 in Belgium, 2 in The Netherlands and 1 in Austria, Italy and the US. A new brewery is in the process of being build by Trappist monks in Leicester, UK

Beer is one of the few things Belgians feel pride for. Most of us are quite modest and when you ask them 'what's something you're proud of as a Belgian?' many won't even be able to answer. Because what's so great about our small country? I mean, we're just kinda hidden between France, Germany and The Netherlands. But beer, chocolate and BELGIAN fries (not French, please) are some of the things we are extremely proud of, and rightly so! There's many other, but lesser known things, cities and places that are absolutely worth it (!) in Belgium, but I'm glad that our beer, fries and chocolate are quite well known and can lure tourists to our amazing little country so they can discover more. Thank you for making a video about it and for visiting!

To my knowledge ( I am a waiter in a beer restaurant in Belgium) there are 16 Trappist beers in the world. 11 are Belgian and also the oldest. Most of them originate from medieval times and the late 19th century. 2 are Dutch. One of them is very recent as it was created in 2013. 1 is Swiss. Another one is Italian and since 2013 the States have a Trappist called Spencer made by American monks based off of a Belgian recipe. Love Trappist beers they are amazing and drink responsible.

Westvleteren is actually made in a very low quantity, and you can only buy it if you pre-order and come pick it up at the abbey yourself.

people always talk about german beer but german beer is actually very limited (due to legal restrictions) and theres little variety since regional beers are limited to their region. belgian beer is where its at. strong, massive variety, high quality beer

U guys forgot Westvleteren.Three of their beers were recently in the top 3 of best beers in the world. They have nice thin bottles and are also made by monks, who only sell at their abbey on certain hours. You can only buy a limited amount per person. They also make their crates I think. And in US those bottles were sold for the price of a crate and more. Westvleteren 12 has a 10.2% alcoholpercentage. The other 2 have lower ones.

Hey guys, just saw the video. Would like to give those who are interested a little bit of information about the beer you drank .. Trappists are a specific order of monks, only they are allowed to brew this beer. There are six trappist beers (in Belgium, 11 total worldwide) , Chimay, Orval, Westmalle, Achel, Westvleteren, Rochefort. Yes two of them you drank, most of these 'brands' of beer have a brown, blonde, trippel and sometimes other varieties.. Feel free to drop by again :D

Indeed. I've talked to a number of american exchange students at parties in my dorm, and they all said that our beers are a lot stronger. I actually like the flat and weak taste of Budweiser from time to time. Sometimes you just wan't a beer to quench thirst, not overpower your tastebuds. Budweiser literally taste like it's watered down.

Abbey style beer means a beer brewed in the tradition of the beer brewed by monks in an abbey, a strong ale wich can be brown or blond. It can be brewed by any commercial brewery. When it actually is a beer brewed inside the walls of an abbey under supervision of monks its called Trappist beer. The profit they make of selling the beer has to be used to substain the abbey and all excess profit has to be donated to charity. There are only 11 abbey's worldwide who are trappist brewery's, six are in Belgium. In my humle opionion Chimay, Rochefort an Orval are the best trappist beers and also among the best Belgian beers.

The only thing ‘abbey’ about most abbey beers is the name
Trappists, on the other hand, that’s well regulated. Those have to be brewed in the Cistercians abbey itself. There’s actually a US-ian Trappist … called Spencer if memory serves.
