Back when i was in middle school , during that time kids still could write their papers by hand, a classmate got someone's book report and he copied every single word including the other guy's name. The teacher only circled the "name" and gave it back to him. In case you wonder how she knew it was him, well teachers knew everyone's handwriting.

George Orwell was an English Democratic Socialist who travelled to Spain during the Spanish Civil War to join a Marxist militia and fight against fascism. Were he alive today he would be Anti-Fa for sure. Read his non-fiction book "Homage to Catalonia" and it becomes so very clear where he stands and what inspired "Nineteen Eighty Four".
He wrote "Burmese Days" and many essays on the evils of colonialism and the white supremacy of it.
He wrote "A Clergyman's Daughter" and many essays on the plight of the homeless, as well as a non fiction book called "Down and out in Paris and London" about his own experiences rejecting his middle class privilege and experiencing poverty firsthand. He describes in detail how the system keeps the poor down. He was also commissioned by a socialist book club to write "Road to Wigan Pier" about the poverty left behind in coal mining communities.
"Keep the Aspidistra Flying" is about the 'money code' that requires people to sell out their ideals for money. It is incredibly anti-capitalist.
Reading Nineteen Eighty Four as pro Trump is like reading one of Ayn Rand's novels as pro Kim Jong Un...

“Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.”
    George Orwell, “Why I write” p. 394
Firstly, George Orwell was definitely a democratic socialist. He stated this consistently throughout his life - from the mid-1920s to his death in 1950. It is true that he wrote a compelling account warning of the dangers of a totalitarian state. But, Orwell always maintained that just because you severely criticised Soviet-style Communism didn’t make you any less a socialist. In fact, socialism as Orwell understood it, stood for all the values - democracy, liberty, equality - that Soviet Communism rejected. Orwell believed that only a truly democratic Socialist regime would support liberty.
“And the only regime which, in the long run, will dare to permit freedom of speech is a socialist regime. If Fascism triumphs I am finished as a writer - that is to say, finished in my only effective capacity. That of itself would be a sufficient reason for joining a socialist party.”
    - George Orwell, “Why I Joined the Independent Labour Party”
    Homage to Catalonia
Orwell detested Soviet-style Communism - a belief strengthened when he ended up fighting Soviet-backed Communists during the Spanish civil war - Orwell went to Spain to fight against Fascism and for the Republican movement. As a member of the ILP, he joined a fraternal Spanish party - POUM - a small Marxist / Anarchist / Socialist grouping who had strong utopian Socialist ideals. Orwell loved their utopian Socialism.
“Socialism means a classless society, or it means nothing at all. And it was here that those few months in the militia were valuable to me. For the Spanish militias, while they lasted, were a sort of microcosm of a classless society. In that community where no one was on the make, where there was a shortage of everything but no privilege and no bootlicking, one got, perhaps, a crude forecast of what the opening stages of socialism might be like. And, after all, instead of disillusioning me it deeply attracted me. The effect was to make my desire to see socialism established much more actual than it had been before.”
    George Orwell, ‘Homage to Catalonia’
But, Stalin wanted to crush all left-wing parties who were not the Communist party; this led to a civil war amongst the Republican movement in Spain. Orwell got caught up in this and it made him really disgusted with Stalin and the Communist party.
“the Communists stood not upon the extreme Left, but upon the extreme right. In reality this should come as no surprise, because the tactics of the Communist parties elsewhere.”
    George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia
This experience of fighting alongside socialist idealists and against Stalinist backed Communist party, only strengthened his belief in democratic socialism.

No, of course they don't. They also don't understand that 1984 was a novel based on Orwell's hatred for right wing authoritarianism and the complicity of the left that enabled it. But then again, how many of them actually read the book in its entirety? Other than slogging through the Cliff Notes to pass exams, they get their "opinions" about it from right wing organizations that love authoritarianism while claiming to champion freedom.

@@YaKnowWhatIming He was critiquing authoritarianism, be that left or right as both are possible (and indeed both sides must tacitly agree to this authoritarian control in order for it to easily take hold). His personal experiences were fighting against right wing authoritarianism in Spain. It is true that the popular view from the British establishment was that 1984 was written as a warning against Soviet totalitarianism. This was largely a deflection and designed to remove themselves from the spotlight, an Orwellian move in itself. Sadly, Orwell died a year after 1984's publication and could not correct the record and so the deliberately incorrect framing of his book has persisted. Orwell was incensed at, as far as he was concerned, the death of rational thought, and this is a thread throughout the novel.

He fought for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, he wrote tracts about the virtue of socialism, he died of tuberculosis because he was living on the streets writing about poverty. Right wingers consistently misunderstand 1984, it wasn't about evil socialism, it was the proliferation of group think and you want to talk about group think, compare the diversity of thought on the left, you've got everyone from Elon Musk to Bill Clinton to Bernie Sanders to Richard Wolff claiming to be on the left, whereas as soon as someone says they're on the right, conservative or Republican you immediately know where they stand on every issue from abortion to immigration to taxes. There's no comparison.
