    This is the best video I have ever seen to change the timing belt. The only thing that confused me was... did he just put the old belt on because it still had white marks. When putting a new one on it wont have those marks sooo.... Is the important thing to make sure the metal pieces line up with the white marks?

    Followed this tutorial on my 03 TL, my car had a few extra steps but most of it was the same. I wish you mentioned that we need to flush the cooling system afterwards though.

    I was ready to purchase this car and decided to do some research first. After seeing the engine had a timing belt and not a chain with the water pump inside, I dropped the whole idea. At 76 I don't have the strength, stamina to do this fix. Taking it to repair shop would cost hundreds of dollars I don't have being retired so my search continues for a good used car with timing chain and external water pump. Great Vid by the way! Thanks.

    So what if your also changing the timing belt as while how would I know where to mark it ? If that makes since ?

  • @morrij01
    @morrij01 Год назад +6

    I did this a few times and marking the belt is more confusing than anything else. The most important thing for timing is to triple check alignment with the timing marks after rotating the engine by hand a few times. Also, to avoid the coolant mess when removing the water pump, there is a drain valve on the back of the block. I cringe every time I see coolant soaking the crankshaft sensor, which tends to go bad. I don't replace the water pump unless it's bad, but I can easily go back in if needed. If you replace the water pump you have to put in a quality one, I've seen more new aftermarket pumps go bad than original pumps with 200k miles or more.

    Great video. Why are you marking the old timing belt, does it matter where the belt goes in?

    8:02 My Acura's anatomy is a little different. That lower tensioner bolt was still too long to come out even when I unscrewed it. And the 10mm bolt that you was talking about to unscrew to take off the timing belt cover Wasn't reachable. I was able to remove the shattered motor mount, power steering pump w/ pulley wheel and a broken sway bar link. I'm really starting to hope that I don't even have to change the timing belt and just replace the motor mount and sway bar link so I can get back to driving to work. PLEASE!....Any advise before I put it back together?

    The hexagonal harmonic balancer bolt removal tool is pointless when you have a 5000 ftlb impact driver. If you don't have a powerful enough impact driver, then the removal tool won't stay in place because the engine moves down when applying rotating force.

      Hey, not sure if you've already done the work. I just had mine done recently. You want to look for the tiniest amount of coolant leaking when you take off the timing belt covers. If you do spot coolant drips, its best to change it out as it will get worse with mileage and cost your own time down the line having to remove everything apart. That is of course if you plan on keeping your TL for many years to come. Also if your tensioner/oil pump seal is still a factory part, it's best to change it out to save you a headache down the line as those will also go bad with time/mileage.

      I recommend changing water pump and timing belt tensioner when doing the timing belt. I also check valve lash.

      For just timing belt it should not be more than 4. That being said alot of other parts are also looked at such as water pump, timing tensioner, oil pump gasket. Usually for cars this old they either will have leaks or if not should be replaced to save on labour costs down the road. With all the above included, 6+ labour hours is not uncommon.
