When Billingham faced Staub in the 1st inning, it was a battle of two players who were traded for one another. Staub was traded from the Astros to the Expos (why, who knows) for Donn Clendenon in 1969. Clendenon refused to report to the Astros. Its just weird how there is absolutely no footage of Pete Rose game 4 extra innings home run that turned out to be the game winner at Shea Stadium. I can just imagine how the Shea crowd and Pete reacted, since it was the day after the Rose-Harrelson scuffle.
I can tell you. I was there! Started right from the beginning. Ephigees of Rose were hanging from the rafters. Would have been sweet to clinch but that would have wait until the next day. Rose was booed the entire game. It was also the game Staub destroyed his shoulder against the wall in right. George Stone came in the tenth inning and gave up the homer. Rose ran around the bases with his arm in the air….great series, I was 13. Also went to the World Series game Seaver beat the A’s.
@@robchell9196 Pete Rose I think hit just as many home runs in the NLCS in 5 games than he did in 160 games played in the regular season. And 1969 might be the year of the Miracle Mets, winning it all. But 1973 just had that extra spicy to it, with the September comeback to win the division (ball on the wall against the Pirates in extras, the doubleheader to clinch at Wrigley on a rainy day), and then the two playoff series against Cincy and Oakland (shame they couldnt win games 6 or 7 in Oakland).
@@hmhm856 - I was at Yankee Stadium while the Mets were clinching the pennant by winning the first game, second game was cancelled.....It was the last game at Yankee before the renovation. The fans destroyed it after the last out.....I think the ‘73 team put the Mets back a few years. They weren’t that good...81-80.
I was watching that game when Rose hit that home run. The fans at Shea were too stunned to boo. Fast forward to 1978 when Pete had that hitting streak and came to Shea. He got a huge standing ovation with every at bat and the crowd was chanting "Let's go Pete!" In the afternoon get away day game I went to with my dad Pete hit a huge double up the gap to extend the streak and the place went nuts. However, the Mets won that game, beating rookie Mike Lacoss when Joel Youngblood hit a home run to put the game away. Ah, memories.
As a Red's fan, I must say, the Met's pitching staff was superb during this championship series. Then they went on to face off against the A's with 62 STRIKEOUTS. Compare that to the Red's 37 STRIKEOUTS against Oakland.
mel bias money and Mets thought Mike Vail would replace Staub in right field led to trade. Vail unfortunately got hurt playing basketball in off season and was never the same. Lolich was over the hill and lasted only one season for the Mets.
mel bias 23 game hitting streak in 1975- then a rookie record. Dislocated foot or ankle playing basketball and career was wrecked. According to Wikipedia went to Indians then Cubs before playing for Reds in 1981-82.
@@hamburg1306 Lolich didn't like New York and decided to retire after one year. They didn't want to keep Staub because if he had played one more year, he would have become a 10 and 5 man and could not be traded without his permission.

Terrible hitting and defence was so so! They stepped it up in the series ! The fans went ballistic because nobody expected the Mets to beat the BIG RED MACHINE!!!
The Reds SHOULD have won this series, but as in '72, their bats just weren't up to the task. While the Mets had a very mediocre year, they were perfectly built for a short series, with starting pitchers Seaver, Koosman and Matlack. As vaunted a line-up as the Reds had, they never scored more than 2 runs in any game in this series. They were outplayed by the Mets more thoroughly than the 3-games-to-2 result suggests. It would be another 2 years before Cincinnati finally lived up to their awesome potential, and then...watch out. The Mets, on the other hand, SHOULD have beaten Oakland in the World Series. IMO, Yogi Berra made a catastrophic mistake by rushing Seaver back to pitch on short rest for Game 6. He could've pitched George Stone, who was something like 12-3 during the year, and saved Seaver for Game 7 on full rest. Instead, Oakland survived Seaver in Game 6 and then overwhelmed the Mets (and Matlack?, who was also pitching on short rest) in Game 7. Colossal blunder, IMO, by Yogi.
i have game 7 of the '73 series on my channel and made the same comment about Yogi bringing Seaver and Matlack back on short rest. i also agree the Mets out played Cincy more than the 3-2 result indicates, this game illustrates that, Seaver took a shutout into the 8th and yet the Mets lost. thanks for the comments and glad you enjoyed it.
@@sportsrevisited9699 I'll check that out. One other thing I distinctly remember from the '73 Series was that, sadly, it was painfully obvious that Willie Mays' best days were behind him. There were a couple of instances where it was cringe-worthy. And you just didn't want to see it happen to the Say Hey Kid. IMO, the greatest athlete to ever play MLB, but time overtakes everyone.
Sports Revisited Seaver knocked in their only run too. Interesting that Gowdy brought up Seaver’s arm troubles from final 2 weeks of regular season. But pitched great game here.
I agree that Yogi blundered by not pitching Stone in game 6. But heard that Yogi may have wanted to start Stone but Seaver insisted on getting the start for game 6. Not sure about that one. At that time general rule was 3 man rotation in WS.
In all 5 games, all the Mets pitchers allowed zero to two runs. And Pete Rose, who was never a home run hitter, hit three home runs in this series, with the two main ones being this home run in game 1 against Seaver, and an extra winning game winning home run in game 4 at Shea.
I also went to a Saturday afternoon game in early 1978 at Shea when Pete hit three home runs in the game. Everyone in the crowd was stunned. His first he hit to right field, hit the top of the bull pen fence and then landed in the Mets bullpen. When he hit that third home run I could see Pete's face from our seats on the first base side he had a huge smile on his face. What a competitor!

@@Jiltedin2007
Yes, you might be aware that its Vin Scully doing the game for CBS that featured "The Catch" -the 1981 Championship game between the 49ers and Cowboys.
The good old days when games were two hours long. Batters didn't step out between pitches and pitchers didn't walk off the mound every minute.
....we thought they'd never end. now here we are at the end of the good old days. makes one wonder what's it all been for. just an empty garden by the brownstone door and in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more.
REST IN PITCHING, TOM SEAVER!
Ever so slightly jumpy video. Seems like 1973 was trying to reach through the mists of time to grab this video and drag it back to the mid 70s.
Seaver is the best RHP since WWII.
MANCHESTER UNITED - it you have to sell soccer that hard than I say no....
Pedro Martinez, bob Gibson, are in the mix.

This is as good a game as Tom Seaver ever pitched. Electric fastball and he knocked in the Mets’ run!
The Mets were not the better team, but they played better than the Reds. And that is why the Mets beat Cincinnati. Because they played better.
You can say same whole true in 69 world series mets and Baltimore
And had better starting pitching...
I wish I could see Matlack pitching in Game 2. That pitching staff was so stacked.
Andy Kosco got the only 2 hits for the Reds.
Fantastic! 👏👏👏👏👏 ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾ 😁😁😁😁😁
As a Red's fan, I must say, the Met's pitching staff was superb during this championship series. Then they went on to face off against the A's with 62 STRIKEOUTS. Compare that to the Red's 37 STRIKEOUTS against Oakland.
Terrific pitching duel.Tom Seaver could bring it WITHOUT all the steroid freaks of today who aren't even in his league.
Even with tendonitis Seaver was dealing. And that slider! My goodness what a pitch that was. RIP Tom Terrific and thanks for all the great memories.
Seaver was the best I loved him so much
rusty staub one of my favorites of the time still pissed he was traded for mickey lolich.
mel bias money and Mets thought Mike Vail would replace Staub in right field led to trade. Vail unfortunately got hurt playing basketball in off season and was never the same. Lolich was over the hill and lasted only one season for the Mets.
@@hamburg1306 remember him well he had a rookie record hitting streak if I remember correctly. Vail I think went to the reds correct?
mel bias 23 game hitting streak in 1975- then a rookie record.
@@njpubadjuster3710 yes M.Donald Grant also thought he was a “tough negotiator” so what you say about 10 and 5 makes sense. Start of Mets getting cheap with their players leading to more horror in 1977.
On paper , ya had to give this series to the Reds.
I certainly agree, but isn't it great the game is NOT played on paper.
Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.
Lindsey Nelson (PBP) & Ralph Kiner (C) 1-2

Rose ran around the bases on his HR @ 1:45:00 like he was late for dinner. 😅
Terrible hitting and defence was so so! They stepped it up in the series ! The fans went ballistic because nobody expected the Mets to beat the BIG RED MACHINE!!!

You mean, no one choked up on the bat more than Felix Millan.
@@rayjr62how he got the ball out of the infield I have no idea he hit 3 homers
Stone did start Game 4 of LCS but then again no travel days for LCS. Game 4 was on Tuesday. So needed to use 4th starter.
This is intense! SEAVER!!!
Wow they had to pass along the one mic between Lindsay Bob and Ralph. I guess mics were too expensive to get 3 of them back then.

The Reds were so much the better team...with no pitching. A miracle they won 99 games with mediocre pitching.
Different game. Seaver would never have started the ninth. Wouldn’t have started the 8th for that matter. But then again few starters of his caliber today.
Steven Hamburg: Name one?
They had to share one microphone lol that was a long time ago....
