God I wish Javier could have seen more clearly. Everyone else was more bad than anything at the core. Bill, Micah, and Dutch. But Javier was a mostly good man and friend who just couldn’t see who Dutch really was at the end. I seriously liked him as a character for most of the game.
As John says in RDR1: "Escuella was always a torn man. A cynic who desperately wanted to be a romantic." In RDR1 I always got the impression that John was closer to and had more in common with Javier than with the others. I'm glad Rockstar have payed so much attention to detail in making these random event character interactions in RDR2, these scenes are so compelling and add so much depth to the characters.

I wish they put a bit more effort into Javier turning “crazy”. In RD1 John said “when Dutch went insane, it hit Javier harder than us all”. It’s like he was only hostile right at the end. It didn’t really build up like it did with Bill or the others. Wish we had just one more mission with him where you see his behaviour changing.
Javier stuck with Dutch out of loyalty, but I'm pretty sure he's meant to have left immediately after that. He probably turned into RDR1 Javier just as soon as he left, realising how Dutch had fucked up, and felt betrayed when he heard John was coming for him

We are constantly exposed to him, his history, and we get to know him, but there is literally nothing good or redeemable about him at all. He has been a vortex of degeneracy his entire life, as evidenced by the fact his own brother wrote to him and told him if he ever came anywhere near him or his brother's daughters, he would just shoot him right in the spot.
Damn being one of the few folks to have actually played the original red dead redemption scenes like this makes me sad. In RDR1 if you kill Javier instead of delivering him to the FBI alive(I think it's better to kill him) John sheds a tear and spits on his corpse and when he delivers his body to the complaining agents who wanted him alive he states "You're lucky to have him at all" . Seeing the camp interactions and seeing how the prequel unfolds shows how more complicated their relationship was than I thought. RIP Javier, he was a bro

I was gonna say something about how the first conversation is little more than a reference/foreshadowing for the player... Or the way he stumbles away from the table reminds me of walking out of the bar in Armadillo after taking like eight shots in the first game. But I just can't get over how John reacts to and acknowledges Arthur's presence in the second conversation... The way he looks right at him several times and expresses to you when Abigail calls him... It shows you the kinda detail in this game, they could have just made it so they completely ignore you until the conversation is over, but instead they acknowledge your presence... It really does feel like you're Arthur and you just sat down mid conversation and joined in, rather than just creepily watching from the side (even though you can rarely if ever actually talk during these)
There's a really sad one in chapter 2 near the campfire. John thanks Javier for saving his life and he replies something along the lines of "don't mention it, I know you'd do the same for me". Cut to 9 years later...

Video games really can tell a story in a way tv and books just can't. Games can showcase an entire world with multiple conversations going on at once about everyday things. In tv and books the focus always has to be on the speaker or whoever is thinking, and the dialogue is usually solely to further the plot. In a game you can walk into a bar and hear ten different conversations and choose to listen to a few, or completely miss them all.
