  • This is a 3-day solo backpacking trip in the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness of Montana. 27 miles and apx. 6000' elevation gain, this trip ran the gamut of blackened burn areas with an explosion of wildflowers, to tranquil and awe-inspiring mountain lakes and high passes. One section of the trail touched on the Continental Divide Trail, but only for a few miles, so not quite willing to call this a 'section hike,' but fun to experience this high, wild country.
    Hiked this trip the last weekend of July, 2019. Base Pack Weight (minus camera gear) was 15 lbs. The route was a clockwise loop, including Edith and Johnson Lakes, Pintler Pass, overnight at Oreamnos Lake, 4 miles of the CDT, then over Bitterroot Pass, down to Middle fork of Rock Creek and back up for the second night at Upper Phyllis Lake, before coming out the third day along Rock Creek.

    I was in the process of planning a Pintler 3-4 nighter when this video popped up on my feed. Awesome! Glad you posted this, it answered a lot of my questions. Thanks!

    Excellent video! I like how you structured things. Informative narration, compelling action shots, real time hiking shots, landscape panning, and educational moments. Also, enjoyed the section showing the locale and route. A very watchable and exciting video. It's like I was there :)

    Cool video! Any signs of wildlife on your trip? See any elk, deer, moose, or bear? Or any signs of them?

      Thanks! Pretty much always see elk, deer and bear scat in MT, but can't recall whether I did on this particular trip. Certainly no sightings, I would remember that!

      Thanks so much! Introducing kids to the woods can be great fun and a great way for us to see things anew through their eyes. Just checked out your channel too -- stunning photography and action shots! Well done.

    Wow, beautiful country right there 👌 Montana is way up on my to do list, especially Glacier np, is this near it?

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! This area is a 3-4 hour drive south of GNP; however, both are on the CDT. Of course, in between the two is the vast Bob Marshall Wilderness, also worth spending time in! I'm headed out next week for a trip in 'the Bob' and have another one planned to cross GNP in 3 weeks, so videos on those coming in the near future. 😊

    thanks for taking us along. such a beautiful area.. the meadows and of course the lakes.. would you need a license to fish there? and can you explain the permit system that operates in america.. do you pay or are you just signing in? where do you do this, and what happens if no-one is around at the trailhead or wherever you are supposed to do that? sorry that's such a massive subject.. i'm curious if i visit there.. maybe it's worth a video for your international subscribers :) haha.. anyway cheers for the great views!

      Thanks for watching and great idea on a video! As a world traveler myself, I'm thrilled to have "international subscribers" and am happy to answer questions. Are you from 'down under?' (pardon the cliche)
      Answers: Yes, a fishing license is required, separately purchased in each State. Current, nonresident fishing license in Montana is $25 for 2 days, $56 for 10 days, or $86 (all US$) for the season.
      No permits required on National Forest or State Forest lands. Camp anywhere! Permits are required only in the National Parks, such as Glacier and Yellowstone (in Montana). There is a voluntary registry at most trailheads, but it's just to keep track of who is in the backcountry and which trailheads get the most use (for allocation of trail maintenance resources, I believe). Nothing would happen if you failed to register.
      I hope you can visit some day. I feel blessed to live where there are so many great opportunities to backpack; but, every place has it's own beauty for those who are willing to see!

      @@ShastaBubbaactually i did live in NZ for 10 or so years but now i'm in the UK.. hope to make the states soonish.. i'd love to do the PNT while it's still chaotic and maybe the CDT but there are sooo many smaller trails that look amazing and with a 6 month time limit it might be better handpicking specific areas instead.. or i guess just come back another year haha! cheers for the clarification

      You might consider doing section hikes of the CDT and 'cherry pick' the best areas.

    Hi Dan, I was just wondering what your opinion on solo female hiking is. I’m just starting to get into backpacking, but I don’t know many people who like hiking/backpacking in my area (I’m hoping that will change once I get on the trail more). My plan was to do some solo trips, possibly AT sections hikes next summer, to build my skill set and meet people. Do you have any recommendations or cautions against hiking solo?

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  5 лет назад +1

      Hi DS! Your question is a great one, but it also brings up some sadness in me, because part of me wants to just say, "Go for it; you'll be fine," while the other part of me has to caution you that women don't have the choice to ignore the extra danger involved with encountering wildlife of the two-legged variety. Still, it does seem to be the case that solo female hikers are on the rise in the last 5-10 years especially and I think that the risks, although real, are rare compared to the time spent in the wilderness with nothing bad happening. I would put 'negative interactions with men' in the same category as bear encounters in the sense that, since it is a possibility, take appropriate cautions, but don't allow fear of a rare event to prevent doing what you want/love to do. And the response might be the same in both instances: carry bear spray and get comfortable deploying it by practicing. I believe that when an obstacle is in you way, it's better to find a way around or over it, rather than stopped.
      Otherwise, I might add that the AT might be the LAST place to hike solo as a female; just based on the news reports, it seems to be a magnet for weirdos and I think you would be safer on just about any other trail in the country.
      There was a forum thread on this topic in which some solo women were expressing their experiences that the people you tend to meet 5-10 miles or more in the wilderness are almost always 'good' folks and someone intent on harm isn't likely to go to that level of effort. Might be something to that. Check out the videos made by Catherine Gregory -- she does some solo backpacking and has thoughts about it.
      Happy trails!

      Just curious, have you found some backpacking partners a few years later. I have 43 years of backpacking experience so I seen the rise in more diversity on the trail. I have seen more solo females in Olympic NP than any other. Seems women like the company more than guys I think more differences in drinking in camp and fishing/not fishing tend to make it less likely to find the appropriate partner.
      Certain places are really not a good idea to go alone for either gender. I do but week long trips done to places I want to go to with little flexibility to go where somebody wants is the primary reason. My wife goes on a a couple of easier trips a year. I have posted on FB sites that I am looking for a partner and got responses. It works if you get to know them to work out fitness level and how adventurous they are. Also for me matching bear safety efforts should be matched.
