  • In this video, we explore the crucial role of Vitamin B12 in maintaining nerve health and producing red blood cells. B12 is a nutrient missing in plant-based diets. While traditional Indian vegetarian diets are rich in most micronutrients, they typically lack Vitamin B12, leading to widespread deficiencies. Historically, these deficiencies have been overlooked and we have simply managed to live with it thanks to dairy/milk products providing a small amount. But, with modern understanding, there's a clear opportunity to enhance our wellbeing through supplementation or fortified foods. Dive into the science behind B12, its significance, and practical ways to ensure adequate intake, especially for those on vegetarian or vegan diets

    My mom is 81 years old and is a pure vegetarian, no eggs. She also consumes very little milk. Her B12 has always been at very good levels, in the high 500s. She does eat a lot of fermented foods like idli, dosa etc as well as curds and buttermilk. I am also pure vegetarian and have sufficient B12. I don’t eat as much fermented foods or dairy as my mom does and am still good, in the high 300s. My husband who grew up as a non-vegetarian and has been vegetarian (with a similar diet to mine) for the last 15 years struggles to maintain his B12 levels without supplementation. Perhaps each body’s absorption capability and adaptability also contributes to this.

      Yes. As I explained, dairy does have some and some people have better absorption capability, which is why only half the population is deficient

    At 3:16, you said that plants evolved a completely different biochemical pathway to produce DNA, fatty acids, amino acids, proteins. Please be aware that B12 is NOT THE END, it is the means to an end, namely, production of DNA, fatty acids, amino acids (building blocks of life). If this end is achieved in certain life forms without resorting to B12 synthesis (such as plants, herbivores etc) then its quite possible that vegans and low dairy consuming vegetarians, over several generations, develop the ability to circumvent the need for B12 for optimal health. Many years ago, I saw a video of an Indian joint family from Gujrat who had been raw vegans for several generations. All thirty five of them had excellent health and vitality, but when tested, were paradoxically severely B12 deficient. To summerize, those among us who stand in awe of the wisdom and efficiency of mother nature find it unlikely that she would make ALL animal life on the planet dependent on a rare mineral found in a miniscule region of Earth, the Congo. Science still has a long way to go to understand the power, capacity, and mystery of life in general and rhe human body in particular. Science and scientists are Eurocentric, and patently carnivorous. What is indispensable for them may not be so for other human societies and other forms of animal life.

    I have had nerve probs upon suddenly leaving non veg foods, vit b12 deficiency kicked in after 2-3 yrs, not causing anemia but directly impacting nerves. I did lots and lots research and then understood how to cure myself. I did vit b12 shots even by myself sometimes, then later resorted with sub lingual tabs weekly once, which is enough now. I have literally tons of research on vit b12 for past 10 yrs. All of what krishashok is saying is 100% true. I would still supplement not because I am still vegetarian (avoid eggs too) , because food is not enough to top up this vitamin or it's not well observed. Also, you see anyways all foods are supplemented with vit b12 by factories and agencies even the poultry. So it is better to take directly from tabs/supplement. Hats off to you Krish. Perfect video.. Addresses all vit b12 prob.. It is game changer only if people understand and take action.
    One last statement - if you have enough vit b12 and vit D, you will be happy mostly , can avoid most type of depressions. You have perfected the art of conveying the concept with lovely story telling

    Video misses on an important fact that B12 absorption is based on Intrinsic Factor. B12 deficiency is quite common even among meat eaters who consume it quite often. The best option is to take sublingual supplements or b12 injections that avoid the gut route altogether.

      @jalbhagwagar3353 4 месяца назад +19

      Great video.
      Yes, you are spot on.
      Intrinsic factor needs a particular pH level to be available.
      People with low stomach acidity (microbial issues) and those that use metformin do not absorb B12. Metformin reduces stomach acidity.
      Humans being obligate carnivores, have a stomach pH of 1.5-2, evolutionarily. This is due to our scavenger past and maybe for better B12 absorption.

    I recently got over a severe deficiency and would suggest folks to take it very seriously. It's also notoriously difficult to get proper diagnosis. The usual serum B12 tests are necessary but not sufficient (you can be deficient even when serum b12 is high). Better to get tested for MMA or Homocysteine as they tend to be higher if there's a deficiency. Also when you're taking b12 supplements, you'll need to take enough B9 (folate) and b complex in general as they tend to work on unison (cofactors). There are multiple forms of b12 in supplements and it's usually in the form of cyanocobalamin which is not the bio available form. It's better to take methylcobalamin.

    • @HumbleBee123
      @HumbleBee123 4 месяца назад +1

      Yes I've eaten vegetarian for about 17 years and vegan diet for 3 or more.
      Yet I know more people that are omnivores who are b12 or iron deficient.
      I've done loads of research. And many mental health, gut, hypermobility etc are connected to b vitamin deficiencies.
      This can be due to DNA mutations including MTHFR being a more common one.
      It causes issues relating things like folate and b12. So buying supplements if synthetic and not the active methylated form actually can harm people.
      This something I'm looking into due to genetic conditions in the family. And those is looking like a possible link and an easy fix if we can get dr to refer us for DNA testing to confirm.
      I've bought myself and my brother methylfolate and methylcobalamin. Well I bought my brother the b complex but active nutrients. Not synthetic b12 or folate which is back. Especially if you cant methylated it in your body. You end up accumulating the inactive form and you body is unable to deal with homocystein properly.
      Wont be the case for everyone. But those with MTHFR mutation are at risk.

      @@krishashok OK. Here is the crucial thing. B12 supplements are available in two forms, methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. The latter is much cheaper, but it leaves a cyano residue. Perhaps, from your point of view, it might be too tiny - 'abeyaar, lelo cyanoamin', but the methyl form is still safer. Those who can afford should buy the costlier variety.
      That said, I am not happy with the suggestion that meat diet is necessary. Granted, there might have been a radical change in our environment with (today's excessive) sanitisation, and that might make external supplements necessary. Still, there has been considerable research in gut health; there has definitely been a move to, shall we say 'desanitise' (check the share price of the company that makes Detol, you will appreciate this point.); and there is an appreciation of symbiotic relationship between bacteria and human beings.
      Moreover, there are reasons to believe that meat diet could influence other areas of life although these enquiries are in their early stage. Please take care not to sound too critical of Vegetarian diet. I know it is fashionable to eulogise meat diet these days, but for the sake of knowledge, avoid getting on that bandwagon.

    I chanced upon your video and channel. I'm simply blown away by your story telling ability to drive home important points on health. Do you have anything to say about addiction, alcoholism and nutritional deficiency? For example, does lack of a nutrient make people crave for substance? I suffered from severe Vitamin B12 deficiency when my vegetarian mother in law came to live with us and I went into vegetarianism from being a regular fish consumer. I had to take Vitamin B12 shots and I am good now. But during those days I used to crave for sugar, peanut chikkies etc and gorge on them - I ended up with stress and gallbladder stones and had to be operated for gallbladder removal. The machine is quite expensive one and many end up paying the amount waiting to get benefits . Being your reader and follower of your channel, I am quite skeptical of such claims. Can you help by making an episode ? If it is already made and I have missed, kindly share the link. Thanks in advance !!

    RDA is survive not thrive.
    ODA (Optimal Daily allowance) needs to be given to people by functional nutritionist to live a good life.
    ODA is 10-100mcg.
    Most Indian supplement has mecobalamin which has 73% conversion rate when it is sublingually taken. Hence people have to take it accordingly.

      I feel the same, I've noticed it too. Even the recommended protein intake is too low, with only 60g on average. It truly only tells you the minimum amount that you need to eat and a lot of people believe that's the amount they should consume.
      A lot of the times, we are unable to absorb what we eat properly or entirely, so everyone should know and try to consume more nutrients than recommended to be on the safer side

      @@animatedmvs8818 no, protein 60g is proper, rather i would say people who consume even less than the rda would also do fine (since rda tries to cover 98% of the population, most would survive on less)
      Infact, protein deficiency is really only seen at abnormally low protein intakes typically associated with malnourishment/starving.

    • @tz3925
      @tz3925 4 месяца назад +1

      No, rda is not survive. It is the adequate levels. It takes the average requirement and ALSO sets it 2 standard deviations above so as to cover most of the population. Thus if you're reaching the rda you are probably fine.

    • @veernair
      @veernair 4 месяца назад

      @@tz3925 rda = EAR x 2SD, it's just for survival.. while Optimal Daily Requirement is calculated by one's functional nutritionist based on one's height weight absoporption medical history etc.
      For example metformin depletes Vitamin B12.... Vitamin D depletes magnesium.
      Some may be prone to alot of kindey stone. They might need lower than rda of calcium. All I am saying is people need to get their ODR figured out for atleast B12 as it has alot of functions especially memory recall.

    • @anshadedavana
      @anshadedavana 4 месяца назад

      Nop. There are vitamins and pseudo vitamins. Many of the B12 forms contained in the plants aren't bio available to our body. Their chemical structure is different. For example, Spirulina has a form of B12 which will be absorbed by our system but won't be able to use it. Blood tests will show enough levels but in an unusable state. That's a pseudo vitamin. Bio available form mainly came with animal origin foods. I won't say that everybody should eat meat but at least consume milk based products -Yoghurt, cheese etc.

      Perhaps consider listening a bit more carefully. When you get it from food, you get it from animals that have stored B12 in their liver, and ultimately all of it comes from a few strains of bacteria. How is this contradicting in anyway

    Interesting ! But how do you explain this ? I am 57 years old healthy vegetarian since my birth. I have taken milk, curd, ghee etc in very moderate quantities till year 2016. In fact I do not remember drinking just milk or buttermilk etc for last 35 years on regular basis, though I did take 2 cups of tea and a occasional curd regularly. Since 2016, I have turned vegan with strict no to dairy and any packaged food such as fortified breakfast cereals or vegan milks etc. Yet I am leading a healthy active life without visiting a doctor, without any meds for almost last 20 years now. Does this mean vitamin B12 deficiency has no implications on health ?

    Normal food seems like the best way to get B12 - normal being food with meat. Its funny that in India non-veg is used for normal food, making it sound like it is a deviation from the norm. Interstingly, there was a recent article floating around based on an ICMR report that Indians are consuming more protein than required. That seems to contradict statements from your video on proteins from a month or so ago, though I would take the ICMR report with a mutton roll.
