• RUSH Pinkpop Festival ...

In my opinion one of the most underrated guitarists ever.
+Trevor Kershaw He's more melodic than many of the shredders and I love that about his playing...
He was (at least) 99% of Rush's sound in my opinion. And he's got a very melodic sense.
jeffs1000 so do I..!!
Alex did alright for himself, truly underrated folks are guys like Scott Henderson.
According to Rolling Stone magazine he's not top ten. Then again that magazine is mostly a steaming pile of shit
That really must be one of the best solos i have ever heard.
Seth Feldman Absolutely manic, I'd love to experience the dream that was the inspiration for the song.
Right - I always have that near the top of my list - and not many have come close to capturing it. Expressivity at a peak on several levels, up there with any guitar great and big names have acknowledged it as deserving of a very high ranking in the history of guitar solos. Up there with House Burning Down by Jimi Hendrix. Check one of the Randy Hanson live cover versions. My friend covered it pretty well - let me know if you found a better version. ruclips.net/video/K0_IPBMIjdI/видео.html
All of us that have followed RUSH know exactly how extremely talented each member is. A truly great musical group.
Still get goosebumps every time I listen.
Yep
one of the greatest guitar solos of all time
John Frangione Kanye?
@@dontforgettolike7127 lol
Not better than Lil Wayne’s
Will never forget the first time I heard this solo. So beautiful, you can hear the raw emotion in each note
I dunno. The 137th note is pretty cooked ;-)
@@davep8221 lmao!
Lifeson is definitely underrated, that is a killer solo.
Greatest guitar player of ALL TIME
One of the greatest solos of all time. It’s not always about the shredding speed, but the power and raw emotion that come through. I tell ya this one takes me to another world...
so fucking underrated. up there with Jimmy Page easily imo. I can't be the only one who was influenced to play guitar from this solo. I wasn't even into rock before I heard this; rap was my thing, but when i heard my dad play this in the car one day on a cold winter day, i gotta say my ears were changed forever.
It's amazing how much emotion Lifeson can pull out of a guitar!
His guitar is a direct channel to his soul. SO many of his solos are just phenomenal.
THE most underrated player ever. Ever. Without a doubt. His YYZ solo as well...oh my goodness gracious.
Holy shit. The last 12 seconds are such a flurry of precise finger work. I love this band.
This is great. Lifeson´s solos are greate (for examples in Camera eye, Analog kid, Jacob´s ladder, YYZ and so on).
Without a doubt. Dont forget "Necromancer" off of Steele. Metal fusion long before Metallica. 2112 turned me on to them in '76, All/World/Stage. I found so many more previous story songs that preceded it. Thanks for sharing.
Ehh just some trills. Not really even accurate but that’s the point it’s meant to sound crazy and random nothing really precise about that technique. Still amazing nonetheless
It really is my favorite solo of all time and I really think Alex Lifeson is one of the greatest guitarists of all time
And he did this with an injured finger!
Takes me back to 19 riding with headphones across the great plains on a CB500 getting away from my lost and violent childhood.
Alex has to be the greatest BAND guitarist of all time. Made solos to help the song, played what he had to for the band and still got his day. I think he had the potential to try and stand out more but chose not too, cared more about the music than himself.
He was a team player bud the results are special
@@jimmyjohn8644 You think that was part of the reason he didn't get as much attention as other great rock guitarists?
@@bronnyredding8860 not really, i have a great deal of respect for Alex but i certainly don't think he's the best guitarist
How can anyone not love Alex?
People always talk about David Gilmore Comfortably numb....Nah...this here...absolutely stunningly beautiful solo
They're tied respectively
Both are legendary
Both bealtiful but with diferent propose
That's the best fucking solo of all time !!!!!!
oh god. i almost cry, this is the most powerfull solo i ever heard.
powerful*
Jorge Aguayo ....and he did this with an "ulcerated giacopolis"
I still say Pink Floyds "Comfortably Numb" has a great guitar solo.
husker hammer It has wonderful solos, out of the greatest, but i still like this better.
Jorge Dibildox Solos which are in minor keys tend to cast a more melancholy vibe as opposed to a solo in a major key. Also Alex is a fucking legend of the guitar realm.
been a Rush fan since 1979...love this trio... and indeed Alex is way under rated. IMhO he is one of the most creative and technical guitarist ever.
10th grade, 1977 for me "A Farewell to Kings." Goddamn. When did I get so old?
First album I heard was "All the World's a Stage." Only good thing about high school. Well, bong hits in the back of the chemistry lab is a good memory.
Concert I almost got killed at (no shit) Grace under Pressure.
Whole song is perfection start to finish... But this whole section takes you to the northern lights up and, around jupiter in slow motion and back to your bed on a winters night, safe and sound.
Alex the master, period
LEGENDARY. vastly underrated for decades.
he is a great guitarist and a great guy. i have met him twice and have also jammed with him
GENIUS...with emotion...love this guy
Off topic, but that’s a tricky drum beat Neil’s keeping. I’m a drummer, I’ll leave, but Alex is a phenomenal guitarist no matter what anybody says.
I don't need solos that last 8 minutes. All I need is POWERFUL solos.....and Mr. Lifeson delivers just that!!!
This is most likely the best guitar solo ever, and I knew it close to 35 years go.
Eddie Van Halen was asked in an interview "What's it feel like to be the greatest guitar player in the world?" Eddie's reply: "I don't know, maybe you should ask Alex Lifeson."
So glad I was here to watch and listen to them from career start to finish. Greatest band in the world to me. Three virtuoso musicians.
There’s nothing like discovering this kind of music cold, straight off a tape or a CD, with no social media recommendation (at the most a friend’s suggestion). No video either, just a half decent stereo system. It just blows your mind.
Alex Lifeson is underated, but he's certainly one of the best guitar players ever..!!
ive watched the best from Hendricks to Clapton and so on... this guitar playing from Alex is just straight up amazing!
I simply can not get enough of this version . . . .
Absolute perfection
Anthony Saponaro Chills right up the spine and a tear in the eye, just masterful.
This thread is probably kind of undead for your post, but do you know where the full version is?
always been my favorite member of Rush
One of the GREATEST Guitarists ever, doing one of the GREATEST Solo's EVER!
In my opinion, this put Alex in the ranks of Page, Hendrix, Clapton, etc.
A few people are curious about a tutorial for this solo. I have spent the last 3 months notating the studio album solo - not this version - Eventually I might put up a tutorial, but before that I will post the tab online. Its been a very tedious and repetitive task, but a student of mine has been dying to learn this solo for almost a year and I decided to take on this task once and for all since there dont seem to be any accurate tabs or instructional videos at least not for the solo. Its complete with fingering suggestions and pick directions - Usually a combination or alternate and sweeps aka economy picking even though I hate that term, lol. Im also considering throwing in the rhythm markers but knowing most guitarists they never look at these. if anyone is interested in this let me know, the last flurry of notes on the album is more random and unscalular that most would assume for lack of a better word :) Alex has an extraordinary right hand and this is what I believe is the magic behind his monster solos like this.
Incredible player
+satriani32 Hows it going along bro?
You completed the tab???
I would really appreciate a tutorial.
I'd love to have a copy
Great early licks of Lifeson , The Camera Eye solo is my favourite
What just happened
Eargasm he hit you Ears G spot.
Your face is now in a puddle on the floor, like the nazi in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I like the ad I remember in the early 80"s magazine. "Is Alex Lifeson Too Good for Heavy Metal"..Very tasteful music, and not just for the sake of making noise like todays kid bands"..
They were never heavy metal. They started as hard rock, although By-Tor, et.al. was pretty prog. But for me, AtWaS was my gateway album to prog. Even though they're out of order for me, I heard that before the 2112 album, but even without "Discovery," it's my favorite version of 2112. Alex and Geddy both hate AtWaS. Something about the sound, IIR. I beg to differ.
no doubt the best guitarist alive! all hail alex lifeson
Damn no shit!.. That was amazing!
now THAT is the greatest rock solo ever!
un b lievable playing, raw emotion coming through the instrument
Poetry without words...
One word; SUBLIME 🤘🏽😌
Thank you internet and thank you poster...without you two I would never have seen or heard this performance. One of my fav's and one I'll never get tired of hearing.
He is just amazing ...
Happy birthday Mr. Alex. this is my favorite solo of his!
Greatest guitar solo ever.
Alex. I love'em!
Takes me back to the early 80's listening with friends after school getting stoned.
Same with me but in 2000s.. Born too late
Awesome! A master in action! 😃🎸🔥🤘
The most underrated guitarist in rock...
Marvellous playing by Lerxst
Builds up to the blistering part with masterly skill
Superb
What a brilliant solo!
This is one epic piece of playing
and again and again and again he's a fuckin GENIOUS!!! this solo is amazing!!!
Awsome solo !!
best solo of all time
RUSH......WORLD'S GREATEST ROCK BAND
PERFECT !
The beer is pretty good as well....
Alex had injured his finger on his left hand the night before this concert. The doctor had to drill holes in his fingernail to release the swelling, and yet he still played this amazing!
Yes, this one and the solo at the end of Xanadu are 2 of my favorite from Alex
The Xanadu solo is awesome!
@@robertsims6718 In addition to this solo and the Xanadu one, I also thoroughly enjoy his YYZ solo (especially because of it's "exotic sound" and note choice) and his guitar solo in Camera Eye because of its expressiveness, impeccable note choice and phrasing.
@@bronnyredding8860 Yes, Alex has some really great solos, the outro solos Mission and The Necromancer are two of my favorites!!

Incredible
To compose, construct and play a solo like that requires great talent and dedication! Rush is my favorite band and Alex is probably my biggest, favorite influence to play guitar..he's a legend..
The auditory Mona Lisa!
One of the best shows I ever saw?
Rush in the late 70's on their Hemispheres tour. Kalamazoo Michigan. $10.95 including the service charge. (I still have the stub)
Absolutely awesome performance.
I'd love to hear more about what it was like to be at a Hemispheres concert
@@robertsims6718 It was like listening to the LP, only watching them play it.
Rush wanted their live shows to sound like the recordings as much as they could. This got much harder later with the introduction of synthesizers, but they pulled it off for this show.
It was also the second time I saw them live. When I realized the best seats was up in the balcony, slightly behind the stage where I could watch Neil work.
Such good memories. All four shows.
Love this.
Probably the best solo in existence
In my opinion this solo just lose to Mr Crowley.
i think the exit stage left version is the best, with the build up of the keys and guitar at the end of the solo, makes me shed a tear
wow
He plays it better on _Exit … Stage Left_ though ; it's tighter, more solid and the timing is better. That was a couple years after this, so I guess he got better with practice. Also _Exit … Stage Left_ was very thoroughly mixed and tweaked nearly to perfection, which may contribute to that impression.
I agree, he actually improves his own solos!
he was also playing with a messed up finger during this show so keep that in mind
RUSH = LEGENDARY MUSIC!!!
RIP Neil
Alex rules!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEX!! :D
auguri alex!!!
The God of ES Gibsons
Eric Clapton comes here to 🙏
Wow
Point made but as long as he enjoyed playing as we do also that's what counts 🤫🎶
I love that little buildup of feedback as he kicks on the (drive?) pedal at 0:55
I think if you are able to play this solo, you have completed guitar
We'll be expecting your cover of this within the next week.
Good luck
Fuckin' hell. What a monster on guitar.
He really is! this band changed the way i´m listening to music and to create it...btw, you seem to be the girl who likes them :D
Mint!
Pinkpop 1979 The Netherlands sweaty day back then
🔥🔥🔥🔥
great drum
Jesus, now that’s a solo
Pinkpop!
Delicate and reckless. Awesome.
I wish he could of as a young guitarist explore beyond pentatonic scales. Still very expressive and articulate player. What great rock songs did rush gave us
