Alex is by far one of my favorite guitarists and had a profound influence on me as a player. His expression, creativity and phrasing is amazing. Emotion pours from every note he plays, and he doesn't feel the need to shred on every song. He gets the point across with just a few notes. He is original. This takes me back to the many times I saw Rush in concert. Alex, Geddy and Neil shared a unique chemistry that will never be seen again. RIP Professor.

You are right and we will never see the talent level that Alex, Geddy and Neil all had and could blend together so effortlessly. All 3 of these guys were great on their own, but when they came together, they were untouchable. You can't teach that kind of connection and chemistry.

Alex is, easily, one of the 10 most sensitive and musical rock guitarists of all time. Also got excellent acoustic guitar skills, with beautiful works like "A Farewell To Kings" or "Hope". And all of this in the context of a band with two musicians like Neil Peart and Geddy Lee, who handle a big amount of complex lines and rhythmic situations, leaving a very small room for him.
Finally, I appreciate his extreme versatility to mutate his sound along with the band necessities and musical targets during 40 years of career.
    Alex fan, for sure.

Fun fact: he used his Telecaster (I presume the one he used in New World Man) for most of the HYF tones (not the lead parts.) Also, I just built a guitar partially inspired by this Aurora and the Evans pickups play the biggest role, I got about 90 percent to the glass with EMG S pickups (I used the humbucker sized ones.) That would have been Roll the Bones tour... it was a good one. Bravado, with its ending jam, was totally new... and I remember they did a great medley toward the end that included part of Anthem, one they hadn't played in who knows how many years. It was the last tour where they still sounded like 80s Rush, before kicking into the grungier, more stripped down sound that began with Counterparts.

  • @Aaron-zh4kj
    @Aaron-zh4kj 9 месяцев назад +1

For the first time recently, I’ve finally started appreciating this era of rush, past the 80’s production. For one, unpopular opinion, Power Windows has some of Neil’s best lyricism. Second, as for Alex, another unpopular opinion, the fact he had to fill in space around lots of keyboards forced him to write some of his most creative guitar parts. Grace Under Pressure, the whole album, is probably my favorite example of this. As well, Marathon and Mission are awesome in the same way. I’ve heard plenty of power chords and blues, and there’s plenty of that in early Rush. Without this era, you wouldn’t get Between the Wheels, the orchestra-like composed guitar in Red Sector A, and the driving lines in Manhattan Project and Mystic Rhythms. If the 80s production is unbearable to your ears, do what I do most of the time and listen to their later live albums. In my opinion, that’s peak Rush on those albums. Especially the mid to late 80s era rush, I think it sound even better in more recent live recordings than the album sometimes.

Its to cut through the thick keyboard tones so he needed a more piercing tone via the active pickups. Luckily, according to the band, they worked that all out with technology and working together but I know for a fact that Alex was not happy in the band at this point. It was well rumored he wasn’t happy with the band going so far in the keyboard direction, although now he will probably deny it, at the time it was indeed an issue.

Man. I still call Grace Under Pressure and everything after that "new" Rush.
At the time, I was kinda disappointed with the new Rush because I expected them to go in the other direction. I was listening to Maiden and Slayer and others and there was a lot of great guitar work going on. And then Rush blindsided me with P/G. I was like what the hell... But they remained my favorite band. But I was hoping for metal. Like the Necromancer on steroids. But instead I got 1001001.
But looking back at this era, Lifesons guitar playing was unlike anything I've ever heard. His usual tone and style got washed out on Signals and he knew the keyboards were not going anywhere, so he had to adapt. And he found a way to not only dominate the following album, but flood that bitch in red.
That is one of the reasons Alex is one of greatest guitarists ever.
Name one other person who could do that. Seriously. I would like to hear them.

This is my favorite period of RUSH music and I think they peaked around Hold Your Fire/Roll The Bones. From Moving Pictures through Roll The Bones, every CD just seems to get better. I am a huge fan of 70's RUSH as well and I don't see why they panned Caress of Steel, I loved that one too. Rush pulled the sword out of the stone with 2112 and never looked back. hold your fire was an incredible tour. I wasnt crazy about the sound they got from the counterparts tour. Alex's guitar sound changed, and i wasnt crazy about it as a guitar player myself. But i loved all of the 80's tours and the playing and sound quality was top of the heap!!!

Interesting video. Captures what is more or the less the height of the Signature guitar sound for Alex. Not my cup of tea. But it was an era where he needed to find a way to fit into the sonic scope of the heavy synth sounds that occupied much of where the guitar normally is (from interviews of Alex). I personally love his live sound from "Stages" on. I prefer the live versions of all their songs in the live recordings from 1997 onward. Alex's guitar finally became prominent in the mix and I like his thick sound to all the songs that didn't have it on the albums. Much more sonically fuller and richer.

To those that grew up in the 70s and 80s that said, "I don't like the new Rush of the 80's; they sold out; became to commercial" - Idiots, you missed out!

Everytime I hear Power Windows (not very often) I think what were they thinking? Still a mystery. The only one of all the Rush albums that I rarely play. All the others (ALL of them) are brilliant ... PW ?? What were they thinking?! Lol

I just think it's a period they needed to go through in order to come to know what they really wanted and enjoyed later, which was the power trio (not swathed in keyboards). I put up with the overly busy keyboard era and, like Alex, really embraced his return to heavier guitar sounds.

@@buzzcrushtrendkill the return came in Counterparts for me. I was blown away when that album was released. No more soaring solos, but a return of real rock sounds.
