- Just because the fire risk could be low doesn't mean it's impossible especially if you have a fire hazard of a design as found out in this terrible tragedy

The fact that there was no emergency door valve in each door and no comm system between passenger and controller cabin is just scary. Serious oversight

@Gerald Castiel thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it !!
This is so sad. It’s bad enough to report even one death. But it was absolutely shocking to hear of so many. And outrageous; it’s criminal that no one was held even remotely responsible. God bless these families who still suffer their losses. RIP those who died.
This is something that has always freaked me out since I first heard about it. Fire is one of my greater fears and this and the station nightclub fire are some real nightmare fuel.
Indeed. I fully agree
As a retired volunteer firefighter (9 yrs) and Registered Nurse (24 years), I’m very aware of fire issues. Make sure wherever you live, have a fire plan ahead of time. Involve the whole family/roommates, etc. Practice the plan or drill at least once a year. When in a building, be aware of the exit locations, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, etc. It’s against the law in the USA to lock any fire escape (egress) doors from the inside, so if you see that, report it. Always change your smoke alarm batteries twice yearly (or when they beep at least). Have a smoke alarm on every level of your home! Many people buy a carbon monoxide alarm too. It’s up to each adult to help themselves and the young and the elderly. Preparation is key! Maybe those nightmares will stop soon.
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren hey thunderbolt there’s a crash in 1988 in Paris which was the worst train crash in Paris history I think it would be a great thing for you to talk about it 👍
Fire has always been one of my fears too, ironic that as a child i wanted to be a firefighter, but my height and eyesight prevented me
It must’ve felt like escaping Hell.
I’m claustrophobic to begin with.
If panicking in an enclosed space isn’t bad enough, I can hardly imagine simultaneously burning alive.

Nobody was at fault . Everything was done to code . The fan being defective was unfortunate , but certainly no intent
@@whdbnrm3023 The fan heater was not only defective but totally unsuitable for being placed within the driver's cab. How can you make a mistake like that? It was DOMESTIC fan heater.

Well done my friend! I've seen this disaster from "Seconds from Disaster" plenty of times. It was a shame that this incident happened. And wow 6 years ago the whole tracks were demolished.
Such a sad event. Great work bringing this to us. Cheers.
Great documentary. There was a similar case in the US that occured at Avondale Mine in 1869 (caused by arson) however, many factors of this case and of the Funicular remain the same where a fire broke out in the tunnel and lack luster safety mixed with a building atop the structure would result in high casualties. It makes it all the more important to share accident knowledge and history because history has a way to repeat itself.
One of the few things keeping me sane during 2020. Keep up the good work 👍
So they updated the train but didn’t install basic safety features:
-Intercom emergency calling systems on the coaches to communicate with the drivers
-Smoke detectors that trigger a warning in the driver’s area plus a sound alarm that warm every passenger of the smoke
-No fire extinguishers placed in all the key points in the coaches, the fire extinguishers numbers must be calculated based on the maximum capacity of the coaches
- No hammer to break the windows.
But they thought about adding a heater not designed for the use on moving vehicles.
The reasons to update something must always be to make the thing more safe not more fancy.
All that had to be done was just have emergency door handles and have two conductors and fire extinguishers everywhere, maybe anti fire splinklers too
@@linnymiddy Definitely door release handle or windows release handle, you can see them also on the busses, so it’s not difficult neither expensive to install them. I don’t know if it’s possible to have sprinklers, because there’s no water pipes that can provide the water.
The Intercom to inform the driver it’s definitely necessary, not only for fire but also in case of medical emergencies, or everything that requires the driver to be informed of a specific situation. In those types of trains there’s never two drivers because they move in a single direction, and are moved by weight and counterweight, so the only driver necessary is the one in the direction the train is moving. Fire retardant interiors are a good and efficient way to gain time and slow down the fire, so the passengers can put it out with the fire extinguishers, in case it’s impossible to immediately exit the train because it’s in a steep climb on the rails and there’s no space for the passengers to go.
Overconfidence made this disaster

New funiculars are now build with a garage door system to reduce the draft through the tunnel, the compartments are equipped with fire blankets now, and those funiculars that operate in tunnels now use non flammable hydraulic oil.
When you work so hard to design a funicular to withstand an avalanche that you forget about fires.
These documentaries are worth watching.

Holy shit, hearing how this heater caught fire sounds exactly how the heater in our garage caught fire as well. Same exact design flaw, but thankfully away from any flammable material and falling on the concrete floor. Shockingly the fire alarms did not go off and the whole room was filled with smoke. Our dogs were ok as well as the house. I am just flabbergasted on how they thought it was a good idea to place something like that (because you would have to do that without doing research on the product or design) and say that this item will be used effectively even though it was not designed for this type of purpose. Jesus. I got flash backs when you mentioned the design flaws of the heaters
Edit: thankfully we did not have a ton of Brake oil under the heater catching fire.

You're correct

Makes me wonder why safety features were ignored due to finding cheap and “cutting cornered” ways of running railways/railroads and thinking “Ah, no worries. Should be okay” but then disaster struck.
“we can’t have actual safety standards because we need to make money line go up”
@@griffinrails I see what you mean but even if railroad/railway companies can’t afford safety features, how much longer until disaster strikes.
Heck before 1860, none of the locomotives didn’t even have any air brakes at all hence “throwing it in reverse” was the only way to stop.

The designers of the train should have been sentenced to life in prison.
Agreed
I Was Honestly Stunned To Find That They Weren't Given Any Sentence, Considering There Was Evidence Of Negligence.
@James Ring I mean... If you look at the train and the faulty design of it, then I would guess no. But there have been greater destructions to engines and they were fixed like it never crashed so... Maybe they were scrapped?
Still, those designers are real jerks! I mean it's so unfair to get away with such a crime!
I agree
3:18 - "they board the train not giving a second thought of what is about to happen" - what a strange thing to say. How could you give second (or first) thought to something that hasn't happened yet?

I have just heard how the passengers were able to get out of the tunnel from a train fire but it sure is sad to see the incline railroad shutting down because of the heaters. I hope you have learned that you should never put heaters on moving trains and you should always have safety reasons so that won’t happen again.

The legend has made a video
In my opinion I think they should of instilled a proper heating system that would of avoid the train catching fire but the damage was already done and I agree that they should had fire drills & instilled things for Fire Safety incase of emergencies.
There was one wreck I remember, which is what inspired a scene in one of my favorite steampunk movies, Hugo. It was the Paris derailment of 1895. Could you do a video on that one please?
I like the new warning. Red text and fiery background.
I thought it'd fit the theme of the video.
This is so sad. If there was a proper intercom system then they could've alerted the driver to stop the train before they got into the tunnel or at the very least the Fire Fighter could've communicated with everyone on how to break the windows and escape downwards. If there were emergency exits on the train, then breaking the windows wouldn't even have been necessary and they wouldn't have wasted so many valuable seconds. If there was a fire extinguisher accessible to the freaking middle of the train and not locked off in the front and back, then the people in the back could've used it to help control the fire before it spread. If the hydraulic system that controlled the doors wasn't designed to CLOSE when it breaks then everyone could've escaped way sooner. It feels like the list of safety cautions being violated are endless.
You should do a video on the Onondaga lake railroad bridge. Its killed a lot of people over the years and still nothing has been done to fix it. A few years ago a double decker bus ran into it and killed a bunch of people, and that's just one time. It should've been made into a level crossing years ago yet it remains to be constantly struck by vehicles.
All the fire hazards aside, not having fire extinguishers nor e-stop buttons in the passenger compartments feels totally insane.
I'm wondering now though - have there been any funicular disasters where the cable HAS snapped/melted/etc. and caused a rollback? I know it's sick to be excited about fatal disasters but... I guess that's why I'm here.
Could u do the 1951 Woodbridge, NJ Derailment (AKA The Wreck of the Broker) next?
no. The 20 year anniversary of that was in 1971. Mind you if Seconds from Disaster covered it in a programme I'm sure this lot could make their own documentary out of the footage and a few random shots from elsewhere.

AFTER 2 YEARS THE THOMAS MUSIC RETURNED
The fact that the train designers botched their job so badly that they installed in consumer-grade home heaters and still walked free is a total failure of the justice system, and it opens up the debate about possible corruption.
If the Gletscherbahn was ever revived, they should meet ALL THE LATEST safety standards including emergency release doors and emergency exit windows and even have heater fans designed for vehicles and NOT households.
