I have seen Messiah a gazillion times, but never have I seen a soloist who was able to wrench so many of the intended emotions from me - the tears roll.

I saw this mezzo-soprano named Elizabeth DeShong from Chicago perform it, her low notes were so rich and flavorful on this aria and it similarly drew all the emotions out.

Philippe Sly is one of the first barytones in these decades. Marvelous, colourful voice.

Mr. Sly, you have such a magnificent instrument but it is your intentionally mournful sound of this particular passage in the Word of God put into music by the genius Handel that literally brings me to tears and shame. I am so grateful I found this, at long last it seems. I have not been able to stop listening to your glorious and obvious love for this music, my own personal favorite, along with the other videos I have been able to view. THANK YOU for freely sharing this gift. BTW, I really love only having three violins who are literally weeping. BRAVO to ALL.

Glorious voice, with marvellous word pointing and vocal colouring, all used to brilliant effect in order to enhance the gravitas and drama of the piece. Bravissimo!

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

I contacted Trinity Wall Street Church earlier this year to ask about purchasing a recording of the full Messiah performance featuring Mr. Sly from Dec. 2016. The church was very gracious to share a digital copy of the performance for my personal enjoyment. What a pleasant surprise! Perhaps they would also share with you if you ask.

There are still countless men, women and children in our world today who reject and despise the resurrected Christ. Indeed, He was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53. Thank you, King Jesus. For those of us who have been redeemed from the curse, Jew and Gentile, we thank you most sincerely for going to the Cross, and we earnestly look forward to spending eternity with You. Marantha! Come, Lord Jesus.

This thumps up comes from an alto who can sing this piece, but NEVER as this man who sings with such a mournful expression. I also think this piece is better served by a bass than an alto anyway. I don't know what Handel had at his disposal when he wrote this music but this is just my humble opinion.

@@matthewyonkman5692 So it seems, for example, that the tenor (in the role of Alfredo) may sing "Sempre libera" from La Traviata and a bariton (in the role of Conte di Luna) opens his throat singing "Stride la vampa" in Il Trovatore. Is that known as "free interpretation" of roles? How about Gilda in Rigoletto singing "La donna è mobile" and the tenor "Caro nome"? Ha ha ha ha...each one in his place, so composers determined!

@@eduardoxavier7878 Do you see anything inappropriate in this performance? This is an aria foreseen for an alto or for alto countertenor , with the text of biblical prophecy. Why can't the bass-baritone sing it? After all, this is not a complete oratorio performance! And after all, Mr. Sly is one of the best bass performers in this oratorio today ruclips.net/video/IiLJC6p3sjM/видео.html

I would LOVE to hear Altos sing bass arias! I think it would help male singers a great deal to hear the vocal mechanism and approach of the female voice in their repertoire.
