Classical Guitarist Jason Vieaux on Playing More Musically, and His Gernot Wagner Guitar

  • Tone is really in the ears. I know that may sound funny, but if you don’t know the tone or sound you want aesthetically, what it should sound like, then it’s a lot harder for the hands and fingers to find it. The end part of the process is in the hands, certainly, but that connection between your hands and your heart is really your ears. A lot of experimentation mixed with, hopefully, a good teacher that plays well can be a path to finding your tone or sound. When I was practicing as a kid growing up in Buffalo, I was not afraid to improvise and compose and jump (briefly!) off my studies, simply because I loved the sound of the guitar for its intrinsic aesthetic qualities. I prepared my lesson assignments with absolute seriousness, but my excursions into pure guitar sound were brief-little commentaries on the piece I was playing for my own amusement, or some improv off of the material I was practicing, again, only for the joy of finding the sound I wanted to find at that particular time.

    Most of the guitar students I know don't know anything about classical music outside of guitar music. Jason is right on in that classical guitar students need to listen to chamber music, orchestra music and piano and string music!

      Honestly I know piano music and string quartet but orchestra, not so much. I've only listen the famous ones, (Dovorak Cello, Beethoven 5th, etc.)
      Think it's the education, maybe if we include some study of music history it would give students a better understanding

    Why are the strings a half inch high at the fret 12 on a Cordoba c7 model 500 dollars for the guitar very hard to play.

    • @bobow7227
      @bobow7227 6 лет назад

      From what i understand higher strings leads to more volume and better tone. That is the standard setup for classical style guitars.

      @PeterOzanne 5 лет назад

      Sure, but normal height according to guitar-makers is about 4mm - 1eighth inch - at the 12th fret@@bobow7227

    • @PeterOzanne
      @PeterOzanne 5 лет назад +2

      That must be a mistake - the usual correct height at fret 12 is 4mm. Half an inch is 12 mm, so I think you are exaggerating a bit. Check the clearance with an exact guage, and if it's more than about 4 on the sixth string and 3mm on the first, get it adjusted! 500 dollars is a cheap guitar anyway ;-) Good luck! Btw, plenty of cheap classical guitars for around 500 - Altamira, Alhambra etc. Sound is strong but not terribly subtle - but solid, reliable, easy to play.

    FYI, everybody, the TH in luthier, is a thick 'T', as in Theresa, not a TH as in truth, [or Luthor] think, lute.

    This video makes no sense. Is he a Wagner's agent or an artist? Looks like he doesn't know himself.
