This is my favorite SP 4449 and Daylight video. I just find the whistle sounds and shots in this video are the most relaxing and beautiful for some reason. To each their own.
wow sounds just like the 844, but yeah also a bit smoother. i always wondered about the different bells and whistles on this beauty. from recent, i thought it sounded different than when I was a kid. now i know why haha
This is truely the most beautiful steam engine ever built. I can't get enough of it. I've seen it up close only twice. Living History at it's finest in my opinion.
@444mrjimmy Southern Pacifics grade crossing sensors were activated mainly by diesel horn(sound carrys farther). In main service, the GS series engines used the single chime horn more than the whistle.
It's about time they got 4449 a new (old) whistle, but where's the other one? I would happily accept answers at any given time. From myself and all railfans, all over the internet, for sharing this video with us, thank you, 844Steamtrain. Goodbye. -Max
The Southern Pacific Daylight cars should be the train cars behind number 4449 which is one of my 3 favorite steam locomotives. My other 2 favorite steam locomotives are the Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 J class number 611 which still pulls excursion trains and the Southern Pacific cab forward number 4294 which is a 4-8-8-2 that is on display at the nations best railroad museum in Sacramento, CA.
Honestly, I would love to see the 819 cosmetically painted as a Southern Pacific GS-8 and given an SP 6 chime whistle, then we’d have a third GS class in preservation.
Yes, that is originally SP 2955, named for the man who worked on it's original restoration to fully operational condition, one Mr. James J. Gilmore. He unfortunately passed away before the car operated behind the 4449 for the first time in public excursion service in the early 1990's.
@NorfolkSoutherncats I think when the locomotive was retired and put on display, her original whistle (among other things) was stolen. I'm not sure where they got the whistle she wore until it was replaced with a real GS-4 whistle.
First of all, Wikipedia isn't always right, I know that from experience. Secondly, the 819 and her sisters were originally classed L-1. In the late '40s, SSW sold half the L-1s to SP and were reclassed GS-8. The 819 wasn't part of that half and stayed on the SSW. How do I know all this? I read it in a book and heard it SSW old-timers.
@smoothie6ft3 I believe 4449 was built with a single beam one and had the dual beam one added later. They created a single beam one to make it look more like when it was built.
Wait. Are you telling me that #819 was not originally classed as a GS-8? If so, tell that to Wikipedia. My theory of why #819 is classified as a GS-8 is that the model is closely built to the GS models. My guess. Hey, I'm only 15, I wasn't thought of at the time the #819 was in the building process.
IDK if this is the REAL SP Hancock 3 Chime Steam Whistle that the GS-4s used. And is 4449 still using it's original 3 Chime Whistle that the GS-4s were built with?
Doesn't the SP 4460 still have her whistle (I mean, was it taken off or stolen for any reason?) and if so, why didn't they just take her whistle and put it on 4449?
It was stolen in a yard in 1958 pre going to NMOT, along with the builders plates. The SP sent the museum (after receiving several letters) the builders plates of engine 4444. The whistle may be from 4444 as well, I’m not sure 100%. I might have to make a trip at some point and see if getting on top of the engine is possible (via permission from volunteers)
If the whistles had serial numbers on them and if the 4449's maintenance records (or wherever such a thing like part serial numbers would be recorded) still exist, they could find out if this her lost whistle or not.
Thank you very much for watching, hope you all enjoyed the video!

that whistle is haunting from a distance, and completely bone chilling up close.
This is my favorite SP 4449 and Daylight video. I just find the whistle sounds and shots in this video are the most relaxing and beautiful for some reason. To each their own.

Que bonito esse 49 new hancock 3 Chime apito do Sp 4449 parecendo a voz da Marlucia Josemar
This is truely the most beautiful steam engine ever built. I can't get enough of it. I've seen it up close only twice. Living History at it's finest in my opinion.
You ain't alone there buddy. I think 4449 is my favorite as well. It has always been my favorite and it'll forever and always be my favorite
Gs-1, and gs-2s had Southern Pacific 6 chimes like 2472, the gs 3-6 had hancock 3 chime whistles.
The GS-6's and select GS-4's/5's had 6 chimes.
In 2010-2013 it had kyle broflovski's voice then she had Sherman Peabody's general motors
In 1974-1989, it had SP&S 700's whistle then she had a Northern Pacific hancock 3 chime whistle until 2010
This new whistle is awesome and a much better fit for 4449!
I do like 4449's new whistle!
@444mrjimmy Southern Pacifics grade crossing sensors were activated mainly by diesel horn(sound carrys farther). In main service, the GS series engines used the single chime horn more than the whistle.
I'm going to miss her old whistle, but this one is pretty good as well.
As much as I love that whistle, it scares the crap out of me!
I like her new whistle.
Nice editing, a veritable feast of Hancock 3-chime!
That's very helpful. I don't have much knowledge on the 819.
Great shots with the SP 4449!
Southern Pacific 4449 is my favorite train
great catches and video of its holiday express day and night runs
good whistle action too
@97trainman The GS4 Daylights went from 4430 to 4457 I belive, and the GS2's and GS3's were 4410 to 4429. And there were 2 GS5's, 4458 and 4459.
BEST WHISTLE EVER
There's another Daylight whistle which belonged to 4455. In total, there were 49 Daylights
This and the last two whistles she used were good matches.
Awesome! Love the new (old) whistle!

At our club here in Walnut Creek, California We have one of the original Daylight Locomotive bells.
Pingu's new voice kyle broflovski Origins
Awsome Hancock 3 Chime! I love it! :D
BEAUTIFUL!
Actually, the 819 was never sold to SP and reclassed GS-8, however, it can be considered 4449's cousin.
Honestly, I would love to see the 819 cosmetically painted as a Southern Pacific GS-8 and given an SP 6 chime whistle, then we’d have a third GS class in preservation.
@darkhound891 Her other whistle was her original whistle. She used it ever since she was the American Freedom Train.
This new whistle sounds just like her old whistle, only higher. I like this new one a little better. :)
that is a great sounding whistle
0:45-1:29 My god ❤️🔥
We love you train daylight 44449 happy holiday
The chords are B (it's VERY faint), D#, and G if anyone's wondering.
I gotta say, this whistle kicks ass!!! :D
Yes indeed!
@PetersTrainz101 But this is an original SP GS-4 Daylight whistle.
Who else thought 4449's 3 chime whistle sounded a little like UP 3985's?
It sounded like 3985’s whistle before it fouled in the early 2000s.
Ah, now I understand why #819 was considered a GS-8. I know that Wikipedia isn't always right. Thank you for clearing this up.
Cuz some of the Cotton Belt L1s were the GS-8 Class
Supposedly N&W 611 has a Hancock 3-chime but it doesn't sound like this one. Maybe the reeds are set a bit differently?
love it and the lighting around the loco especially the front
MTH should make a model with this whistle.
They did!
@@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos With that whistle?
@@AlexTrain5249 Yes.
NICE! Always loved 4449 and now she has a daylight whistle! Is the observation car an original daylight car?
Yes, that is originally SP 2955, named for the man who worked on it's original restoration to fully operational condition, one Mr. James J. Gilmore. He unfortunately passed away before the car operated behind the 4449 for the first time in public excursion service in the early 1990's.
@imagreatbigman It was some kind of 6 chime. This new one is a handcock 3 chime.
@444mrjimmy it has an airhorn fitted, but rarely used
The whistle from Daylight 4455 is in McPherson, KS.
Really? Have you seen it in person?
I love it. What happened to the original? It must be so neat to run a steamer at night.
She sounds beautiful now! Not that she never did!
@darkhound891 We DO know that it's an original Daylight whistle.
Better than its old whistle.
@imagreatbigman it was some kind of 3 chime from a Northern Pacific Z6 Challenger if I'm not mistaken
What whistle did the 4449 have previously? I remember the one I heard was a lower note than this one.
Does anyone think this sort of whistle should be on 611? Because it sound's incredibly close to the one she wore in the 90's.
I don't hear 611 in this one
Music to my ears
@Dinosorable It's not just an old whistle, it's THE old whistle I'm talking about.
SP 4460 would have an SP 6 chime like the gs-2. I have recorded sound from her in the 50's
Railroadbrony4412 believe or not on a simulator called trainz 12 they used a sp 6 chime for their gs-4 models
Alex Paumen Yes I'm aware of that. I don't know why though. GS-3 - GS-5 all had SP 3 chimes.
Why did the GS-2 and GS-6 have whistles with more chimes and the more advanced GS engines didn't? I never understood that.
Not to sure why. Maybe because they're identical.
That makes sense. Thanks for the info! This whistle is my favorite locomotive whistle, right in front of the old PRR 3 chimes used on the T1s.
It was likely off of a scrapped GS-4 from the late 50s
@viperdude1412 Oh, I see. But apart from that, I LOVE the new (original) whistle. It's REALLY gonna sound great when she charges crossings at 80mph!
@NorfolkSoutherncats I think when the locomotive was retired and put on display, her original whistle (among other things) was stolen. I'm not sure where they got the whistle she wore until it was replaced with a real GS-4 whistle.
Man that is beautiful!
Alex

There was a GS-8 made. In fact it's been preserved. IDK where. But, there were no GS-7s to my knowledge.
Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The home of Cotton Belt (SSW) 4-8-4 # 819.
I wish I could see her in Oregon She's a good looking engine
thats what a Northern is to sound like
I understand.
2010-2013
Thanks for telling me.

@imagreatbigman It was a type of GN Hancock 6 chime I've heard.
@PetersTrainz101 What's wrong with the new one? Does it sound too much like 844 and 3985's whistles?
IDK if this is the REAL SP Hancock 3 Chime Steam Whistle that the GS-4s used. And is 4449 still using it's original 3 Chime Whistle that the GS-4s were built with?
I think it sounds amazing lol
Couldnt they track the original whistle back and find out if this one is her original?
You're welcome.
I miss the old whistle.
Why
If you pause at 1:04, the engine looks like a ghost.
3:39 that's a Trainz whistlesound
yes i did
@NatashaFatale59 Also sounds a lot like the 844.
I mean there were no GS-7s or GS-8s, so I wasn't sure if you were just screwing around or just mistaken.
I think there were GS-7's and GS-8's.
if i love that whistle i am on it.
how many daylight's were there because someone on here said that there was a daylight 4455?
I like the new one but i like the old one better
+Jeff Morrow Same.
Sounds a little bit like a Hancock 3 Chime..
Precioso!!!!!!!
too bad i missed it
Doesn't the SP 4460 still have her whistle (I mean, was it taken off or stolen for any reason?) and if so, why didn't they just take her whistle and put it on 4449?

Sounds like a ghost train
is it a steam whistle cross horn because it looks like a horn sticking out of the front not a whistle i know its a whistle but why the horn part
It sounds like Challenger 3985 to me.
I do know that.
Sounds like 734
Sounds a bit like 3985.
If the whistles had serial numbers on them and if the 4449's maintenance records (or wherever such a thing like part serial numbers would be recorded) still exist, they could find out if this her lost whistle or not.
If this is the same whistle from today, then it wouldn’t be. 4449 had a step top as delivered, but this whistle is a flat top from a GS-3
@trainzaholic try the GS-7 and GS-8's
Sp 4449's 49 New hancock 3 chime Whistle
You should have union pacific whistle 4449 it's sound fantastic
