We are so lucky to have such a beautiful locomotive here in the northwest. The last of her kind. Hopefully, more trips are planned for her in the future.
I photographed a number of these runs with still cameras over the years, going back to the 1980s. I've shot the Deschutes-Bend run two or three times, but the best photos came from the runs down to Sacramento and back. I was drawn into this exercise by a friend who was a hardcore steam train nut, who wanted color prints for exhibit made from his vast collection of color slides. I made him Cibachrome prints, a high quality process now long gone, with which he won a number of prizes. In turn, I became infected with his lust for trains and started doing these runs on my own. Many stories and memorable times from those events.
I was there in 2006 when me and my family paced Daylight 4449 from Portland to Bend. Not only that I got to see Daylight 4449 in person which Orange is my favorite color since Norfolk and Western J class 611 featured her red skirting, but traveling to Oregon is one of the most memorable trips me and my family ever gone to! I'm from the state of Virginia by the way. I wonder does the 2006 scenes were filmed by Marcam Productions?
4:52 Daylight 4449 and a rainbow! Great combination. The night shots are great too. 4449 is one of my top three favorite locomotives, so thank you for posting this.
Of all the steam chases I’ve done around the country, the 4449 chase in 2017 was my WORST one ever! The outdoor temp was 102 degrees that day, which constantly overheated the Daylight’s solid journal bearings. Which resulted in it running 10mph for most of the way to Bend, OR, and running almost 9 hours late! The most miserable train chasing day I’ve ever had. And I only got two good photos for the entire 200+ mile chase.
Ya know @7idea Productions, seeing that you teamed up with Marcam Productions for this program... it's weird that we haven't seen any new programs from them since then.
Wonderful video! The 4449 is a beautiful locomotive in both design and scheme. And I can never get enough of the Deschutes River Canyon. It's simply breathtaking. FYI, are you aware that the BLM access road on the east bank of the river is the former ROW of the Deschutes River Railroad? It was an offspring of the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Co., a component of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, itself a subsidiary of the UP. Both railroads were in a race to get to Bend, OR. Northern Pacific won. Leaving the canyon at Trout Creek was a wise decision, I guess.
yes and no, it can be fired up as soon as 4 days but it can't go anywhere except the campus of the ORHF, the RR that they ran on for the holiday express said that she is too heavy to run on their tracks so can't do that and without PTC or insurance for excursions OR permission from UP or BNSF to run on their tracks, can't go on the mainline so its stuck for the time being but it can stil be fired up.
Those "crappy cars" are lovingly restored private railcars, museum quality examples of railroading's past. Except for the Horizon cars, they're from Amtrak's lease pool.
@@J3scribe Name calling, the fallback for no facts. I suspect I have been a railfan since before you were born. This train looks trashy, when compared to UPs excursion train.
@@jimbelcher6877 I was born in the early '60s. I grew up admiring the railroads represented in the eclectic mix of the railcar consist. The SP, NP, Burlington and Rio Grande were among my favorites. Where you see trash, I see industrial elegance. This isn't a corporate OCS, it's a railfan excursion. I wish I could have been aboard.
Bit of a shame that 2012 & 2017 would be the last times 4449 ran on mainline trackage. After 2018 when she was used for filming Train Time, who knows what her future will be like seeing she can't do mainline excursions without ptc or on the tracks used for the Christmas trains due to her size and weight. While she's not a favorite of mine I do still like the engine and have been questioning its future for sometime now. Same with 700 & 197. Only time will tell for what's coming next.
Your family is irrelevant. Nobody needs to know that they can mimic train whistles so that you can spam this BS on every. Single. VIDEO! JUST! STOP IT!
It really stinks the UP is still weird about foreign motive power on their lines, especially steam. The track that the 4449 runs on now is a short line they use for their ORHF Holiday Express, and all of the mainline track through Portland is under the control of the Union Pacific. Missing opportunities for memorable excursions and meet ups with other steam engines like the 700, 844, heck even 2816 or 4014.
It has more to do with Doyle McCormack not having a good relationship with UP. You can read the history on that “checkered” relationship elsewhere on the internet and even Trains magazine.
@@anb7408 Yeah that makes sense. The way that the railroads run now is kinda sad when it comes to preservation and positive promotions of the railroads. Relationships like this in my opinion are key to making sure that people still get interested in the railroads and make sure they last for many more generations. I got the chance to meet Mr. McCormack when they brought the Daylight to Train Festival 2009 when I was 7. Funny enough, I got a letter from him in 2020 after I became an Eagle Scout saying he remembered me and sent me two autographed photos of the AFT 4449 in 1976 in St. Louis. I immediately clicked on this video when it popped in my notifications! Let’s go SP 4449! 🤟

My health prevents such an excursion: this is the next best thing. Beautiful Oregon and Washington, beautiful locomotive. Thanks.
I find this to one of your most memorable videos to date.
Thank you!
Awesome video guys of one of my favourite locos.
an hour and 20 minutes of letting the train be the show, loved it! I'll be stopping down to the Heritage center to see her in person soon!
Great video 👍🏻 Its always beautiful to see her in action.
Although I'm not a steam Era fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this video and showing that particular part of Oregon. ❤
Another breaking It friend amazing video 👍🏽
@10:00 Love how even construction workers use the familiar, "blow your whistle" arm gesture.
Breathtaking captures!
The most beautiful engine i’ve ever seen.
Agreed. Such an engineering marvel.
portland is so lucky to have it resting here in town!
Aw man one of my favorite steam locomotives in the world. Will the Daylight be back out on the rails again? I hope it will.
It does run relatively often in Oregon at the rail museum
September 2006, October 2012, and June 2017 plus July 2011.
Got the chance to see the 4449 up close in 2009 in Durand, Michigan were it was going to Owosso for a train festival it is a beautiful locomotive.
Waow Amazing mister
I live in the Portland area. Watching this from Bend, Oregon this morning...😅

Do you know whether the Amtrak Diesel/Electric loco was driven from the cab of 4449?
It was not. There was an engineer in the cab of the Amtrak unit. It runs in idle except when dynamic breaking is required.
is this train still in service to Bend?
