I wish they could have restored the 6 chime whistle but after so many years of hard use it started to wear down, don’t get me wrong the 3 chime Hancock whistle sounds phenomenal and every year after thanksgiving day to December 18th or so, during the polar express rides I hear that 3 chime SP4449 whistle from my house in Portland Oregon, it puts a smile of my face when I hear that roaring whistle that echoes, What a magnificent majestic steamer she is.
🎉❤
if 4449 still had it's 6 chime whistle with him he would still sound good I mean don't get me wrong the Hancock 3 chime like @per-michaeljamburg said it sounds phenomenal I just wish they had kept the 6 chime with it😔
@@VonVittoThe whistle was stolen. If it wasn't, the 4449 would still have it. As of now, it was found, restored, and put on ATSF 2926. It will most likely be used on 4449 when it runs next.
@@hoscalemadness IF it runs next. Amtrak's not supporting steam excursions as of at least 7 years ago, and 4449's no longer hauling the Holiday Express because of its immense size and weight over the trackage that's often used for those trains. As of now the best ORHF could possibly do is steam her up on occasion and offer short rides within the ORHF grounds. Not to mention that currently, her water tender is being used by Canadian Pacific 2816 in conjunction with her own.
4449#😊
4:24 - The 2015 whistle is just pure perfection
1974 to 1990 is beautiful. Such a whistle suits such a lady of the rails.
Layers!
A lady of strength and elegance
@@hb300blk well said ;)
The “Lady Of The Rails” is The 611 and other J Classes and K2a
The 74-90 whistle was a Southern Pacific 6 chime wasn’t it?
The second whistle shown was actually 700's whistle and it was returned to 700 when her restoration was completed.
The One at 1:14???
Bro love the rails unlimited profile it’s sick
How do you know?
Holy moly that SP 6 chime was a beauty
She sounded better with 700's whistle IMO.
I believe that is the whistle off of scrapped sister 4458 i think
Too bad it was stolen at Brooklyn Yard.
I would stick with the Nathan 3 Chime. Sounds so much better on 4449 at the 2:04 mark
That’s the NP 3 Chime.
2:04 is the whistle I grew up to
100% my favorite
Same
Same
That hancock 3 chime is my favorite
Yes
I love the Daylight such a beautiful train but that 6 chime in the very beginning just sounds and matches so much better then the future whistles after that
Only if you live in the Bay Area.
To each is own my friend
2:38 - 2:46 it sounds like Squidwards scream
1:11. Sound like 844 whistle
sounds more like 3985's whistle tbh
For all of you who don't know the horn is a Leslie A-200 which all GS-4's had if fog comes or if people don't hear the steam whistle. Personally the A-200 is most fitting on the GG1's which were electric locos built from 1934-1941.
2:04 i love that whistle 😍
2010-2011: I love that one. ♥️😍😇
A shame we’ll never hear her original whistle from when she was built
Primary whistles she's used:
Hancock 3-chime from SP&S Challenger
Northern Pacific 3-chime
Authentic Hancock 3-chime from Daylight engine
The SP&S whistle was off 700, although for all I know 700s might be off a challenger
@@RocketStephen618 Nope, I was wrong. It's what 700 used in regular service.
Not to mention the same Leslie A-200/Wabco E2 single chime air horn she still wears
Which one is the Daylight Hancock 3-chime?
@@amtrak1214 the last one, and that last one is from a deceased GS-2
Really love the work they did on the whistle in 2015, it sounds so much better now.
1990-2012 was the absolute best!
My favorites:
1. 🤩 0:01 1974-1990
2. 2:04 1990-2012
3. 3:12 2010-2012
4. 😍 4:25 2015-2020
i guess her voice cracked
Lol
4:27 is amazing
What's the difference between the last two whistles they sound almost identical?
@@EngineerDaylight I believe it was because during the locomotive’s 15 year overhaul, the whistle was tuned differently so it sounds slightly different.
I love that 2010-2011 one so much, sounds more demanding
Marquez Hanks Agreed. Arguably the loudest and fiercest of any steam whistle blown in the last 50 years.
I am so relieved that a streamliner as gorgeous and stoic as the Daylight is still with us riding the rails as majestically as it was the day it first entered commercial service!👍🚂☺️
I absolutely love her original whistle.... Same with her horn! But I really do like the way that her newest one sounds.... While it sounds like "give me back my old whistle!" every time it is blown, I can't help but think it fits.
Yeah her new one is from one of her lost GS-2 mates
IT'S A FRIGGING BOY, FOR CHRIST SAKE
4:25 ♥️ 😍 That's my favorite one.😍♥️
1:39. That sounds like a whistle who rage
That’s me when I feel angry.
Fits her with those black rings
Basically like He Man when he shouts “III HAVE THE POWEERRR!!!” Lol
Both the 1974-89 & 1974-90 whistles are my favorites with the 1990-2012 whistle coming behind
Got to love that whistle between 1990-2012

who is watching in 2020 and forgot that daylight had a air horn until u watched this and now remembered that daylight had a air horn
Most beautiful train whistle I’ve ever heard. Wish they still sounded like this. Can’t stand the train horns of today.
I love trains today, but nothing will ever top the steam locomotive

1990-2012 is the only whistle for SP 4449 hands down
The first whistle is a real screamer. The second sounds almost like the 611.
Hearing that 6 chime brought tears to my eyes
Which one is the 6 chime?
Love the very first one, bloody awesome 🙌
I love that 6 Chime at the Beginning
That 90's whistle tho 😳

I happen to like her whistle at 1:32.
Ethan Morel spooky as hell kinda whistle. I dig it
That’s my favorite whistle on her
That SP 6 chime sounds like the ones used on the Cab Forwards
Nice how you included the Airhorn too
0:12. That sounds like a 1800s whistle
That’s a waaaaay more modern six chime whistle. The 1800s whistles were different. Plus I dig that sixer over all the others even the horn.
Those were more hooter type whistles than modern whistles, except for sierra's modern 5 chime in the 1890's
@@kirbyyork7669 I also like the 6 chime as well. I think it fits this locomotive the best.
@@kirbyyork7669 yeah i personally cant see it fitting very well, i dont know, probably just me lol
That is a cool looking steam engine
That 6 chime whistle on SP 4449 just sounded like NKP 765!
No is not
I wish they'd hook up the full daylight consist and run the full train for an excursion if they get to go out again, that would be special
2010 - 2012 is my favorite
The way it goes super deep and super long
The 2015-Present day is my favorite
Very good
4:25 is by far the best one out there in my opinion
Yep GS-2 whistle
Agreed!
2:10. 2000s whistle
I wish it still had that whistle
I wish they would fix the whistle, it sounded way better than the current one, that’s for sure.
To be fair, that same whistle was used from 1990 until 2010 until it became worn out, but don’t forget it was first used on a Northern Pacific challenger class locomotive before the whistle was to be placed on the 4449 to begin with.
love the whistle at 4:25
Yeah it’s from a GS-2
Maybe from another GS-4 locomotive.
It’s from a GS-3

1:33 I love that whistle!
I miss the 1990-2012
I just remembered - you left out the CB&Q Five Chime from 1992! Not a big deal but that thing made quite a sound, it was HILARIOUS
I left it out on purpose, it whore the whistle only on that one trip. I wanted to show the whistles it whore over many years.
That’s music to my ears
Happy 80th Birthday 4449.
Is it me or does that sp whistle more sounded like a reading T1 0:09
That’s actually a Southern Pacific 6 chime off the GS-4’s high boiler pressure. I also heard it could’ve come off of a 4-8-8-2 Cab Forward.
@@kirbyyork7669 i thought it came from scrapped sister 4458.
Now THATS a train.

Not a very happy GS-4
It’s just earrape
Me when I’m angry.
Me when I’m on a roller coaster. lol.
The southern pacific daylight 4449 carrys a amtrak and carry daylight coaches and make air horns
💯😁⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ my favorite steam locomotive 4449 daylight
The 2015 whistle needs be the permeant whistle.
Ya I don’t love the new one to much
Hermosa locomotora
The first one sounds like Nickel Plate Road 765's 1990 Nathan 6 chime
my favorite was the one that she had in the 1990s
You do know that the whistle could’ve stayed the exact same for all those years? Camera audio was much different back then
I think the 1990 whistle is best
not only the whistle change and its body look but also the mars light how i can it change look at the inside it has those 2 little light bulbs in it but when years past now it has 1 big bulb inside plus the out side of it look bigger than the main light
why does two of the 2015 ones sound like a truck?
second on 1974 to 1990 that is a N&W 611
That is not 611, nor doesn't it sound like it.
The first one sounds closest to the way 4449 sounded as I remember it as a kid in the early Fifties.
0:33 the part is very scary
4:46 This Was In Portland, Oregon
This just made the 4449 better than the 844 all of the whistles sound great but the first whistle sounds the best
You may have heard this from others, but as a 4449 nerd, I can’t help it. Would’ve commented it in one of the previous 500 times I rewatched it, but I was caught up in the whistles - how could one not be?
Just wanted to say that the Northern Pacific Chime (third whistle in this video) was actually used from 1990-2009, and that the third clip you gave for the "NP Chime" (also the third clip of "SP 4449 Wishram Trips w/ Amtk #156") was actually taken in 2011 after the SP Chime (2010-2012) began to croak and squeak continuously, and even when it didn’t, still had a higher and rougher tone. The three clips that followed are of the same whistle, just days before its condition severely worsened.
Nonetheless, this video is absolutely amazing and I truly love each and every scene in it! Well done!
I can't blame you, Im a big 4449 nerd myself. I made the video to showcase all the whistle she's worn throughout her excursion career. You can defiantly hear the squeaks and rough sound of the whistle during her 2011 trips. I suggest you watch the videos in their entirety (link in description)
2:36. Wow.
what have i learned? never, *and i mean never* put a horn on a steam locomotive
The horn does serve a couple of purposes though. In fog, which California has a lot of, whistles perform a lot poorer than normal. The same goes when a locomotive goes at a high enough speed. The Milwaukee Road had a streamliner service with A class steam locomotives that were only equipped with air horns. While i totally agree with you, it does seem to have a purpose.
Even tho I'm British I love that train
Southern Pacific Productions can you make a vid of this train in 2020
1:38 that sounds like union Pacific 844
No?
@adventuresofamtrakcascades301 No sir it does not sound like the 844. The race in Cajon Pass is the perfect example between the two locomotives’ whistles.
That’s southern Pacifics original whistle is the first one you heard
You guys know she had dual whistles right? She had that 6 chime and she had the 3 chime search worlds fair daylight and speed to 16:43
I like the 1976 and the early 1990s whistle the best. And I also really wish they still had that CB&Q whistle on the fireman’s side. I really don’t like how the 4449 was redone when the ORHS got ownership of it. But hey, at least my favorite steam locomotive still get fired up and runs!
The ORHF doesn't own 4449, The City of Portland owns the engine. And it's cared for by the Friends of the Sp 4449 inc. The ORHF was formed to have a home for Portland's steam locomotives. And whistle on the fireman's side was actually a Southern Pacific 6 chime whistle. I believe the whistle on the engine right now was from a scrapped SP Daylight. So it's technically accurate.
Southern Pacific Productions oh okay. I heard on a movie by Mark 1 Videos they put a CB&Q whistle on it for the San Jose Railfair 1998 event. I still like those whistles the most just because Those are the whistles I hear when I think of 4449, since they were on there for the videos I first saw of 4449. I don’t like how they painted 4449 though. Or how they replaced the double-bulb mars light. Sure, the tender saying Southern Pacific Lines is accurate, but it wasn’t for 4449, it always had Southern Pacific on the orange stripe until the late 90s. But that’s my opinion. And it’s still my favorite engine.
@@rivitedrailfan She's my favorite engine too. The Southern Pacific Lines on the tender, and the number boards being in the front are actually accurate for 4449. When 4449 was first delivered to the Southern Pacific in 1941, that is how it looked. That is why it's called the "as delivered" scheme. The SP later modified the paint scheme to 4449's 1981-1999 appearance. And yes they did put a CB&Q whistle on it for the 1998 railfair. Personally I think I prefer the SP lines on the tender, but I wouldn't mind if they returned it to it's 1990 appearance.
Southern Pacific Productions I didn’t know that. If I remember, I saw a book of 4449 showing it before the freedom train with Southern Pacific in the middle. Maybe they changed it a little while before it was retired? I don’t know. I just like the 1978-1990s paint scheme a bit more, looks more natural to me. But then again, that’s how I first saw it. But thank you for telling me this, I know quite a bit of history behind this engine, but I never knew that! I don’t want to make it look like I don’t like Portland for changing it, because I don’t dislike them for it. I’m just glad it hasn’t been retired like so many other mainline steam, like 3985, 3472, or 614.
@@rivitedrailfan Southern Pacific did eventually change the look of 4449. They moved the number boards back to the center so it was much easier to see the train number. They did this before they took off the side skirts and painted it black. I am also glad 4449 has not been retired. Few preserved steam locomotives have as much history behind it like 4449 has.
4449's different whistle and air horn.
Thanks Captain Obvious.
