Not gonna lie, I’ve always loved the GS6’s more than the GS4’s. The GS6’s simple black and silver paint looked beautiful when leading either freight or passenger consists. Also their silver pilot looked beautiful at night, it really stood out in camera flashes.
My grandpa was an engineer for the SP out of Bakersfield, CA. I remember meeting him at the yard when I was 4yrs old, he would carry me back to the house and I would listen to his watch tick. I am 70 now and have his watch, pictures of him on the cab forwards and the Daylight. Might be him in one of theose locos.
That really is a beautiful story. We appreciate you sharing those memories with us. Legends of railroading’s past will never be forgotten. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video.
Really dude awesome man I love the southern pacific railroad and the union pacific railroad but my grandfather was a trucker then he drove a super duty Ford truck f250 in 2017 till 2018 my grandfather was passed on my mom died in 2023 in October cause she had cancer really bad 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Thank you, C Vision for this Steam special! All these places are around where I live. Born in 53', I just missed out on all this steam action 😢 I did get to see the 4449 twice. Once it stopped for the night in Santa Barbara. In the A. M. we watched her back up to her train headed for L.A. what a beautiful Engine. Got to meet the engineer. He had a photographer bugging him to blow the whistle a certain way, & he got pissed. "Well you wanna get up in the cab and take her? I got a lot on my mind pal" I loved it. His name was Doyle i think. Anyways, thanks guys. P.j . Carpinteria Calif
That’s an awesome 4449 story! You are one lucky guy. As far as this video goes, it’s our pleasure to share it with you, P.J. -Thank you for watching and commenting.
c. vision productions you never Dissapointed me with you content . I was asking for a steam documentation 2 weeks ago and here it is . love it . put more of those . love the cab forwards and my second favourite of all time the GS4 's .
5:06 that may be the same steam wrecker was later destroyed in a runaway accident on the Soledad Canyon line in July 1966. A conductor named Johnny Oswald rode it to his death in a futile attempt to stop it. I remember reading once that it was assigned as the Bakersfield hook. I used to work on a preserved sister at the Antique Powerland Museum in Brooks, OR.
I was a letter carrier in Tracy (1988-2008). On my postal route, lived several retired locomotive engineers. Occasionally, they'd tell me about there lives on the SP Railroad. I was a child when steam was phased out & I have a vague recollection about them. We lived on the SF Peninsula, about a mile from the SP tracks & we'd see the SP yards when we went to visit relatives in SF.
Those sound like great memories! We appreciate you taking the time to share them with us. As for the retired engineers that you’d see on your postal route, they must have had some incredible stories from their days on the SP… Thank you for watching and commenting.
2:05 It's nice to see only preserved GS-4 class Daylight #4449 in revenue service on film during the days of steam. She's my most favorite steam locomotive. My grandparents, two uncles and my dad saw her with the American Freedom Train in February 1976 while living at San Antonio, Texas. I got a chance to see 4449 at Train Festival 2009 in Owosso, Michigan. Definitely worth a lifetime to see this beautiful streamlined steamer.
@@CVisionProductions1 Glad to share it with you. Wish AC-11 class Cab Forward 4274 and 4449's sister 4443 were preserved since they're both some of my favorite excursion stars. 4458 was also my second most favorite of the Daylights following 4449.
We’re learning to appreciate these locomotives because of viewers like you. You’ve encouraged us to learn more about them. We’ll have to do some research on the 4274 and 4443.
They seem to be mislabled, but this might be the first production I've seen of every class of GS from Lima, and even beyond! GS-2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all here. We also have Baldwin GS's represented with the GS-7's (those 4-8-4's with the lower square tenders)
We’re sure that you’re correct on all that. Thank you very much for the information. It’s great to hear that these old films included the locomotive variety that you were looking for. We appreciate you watching the video.
You’re very welcome. The SP is definitely a popular fallen flag. We’re happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and commenting.
This is awesome! I grew up in the Central Valley and I’ve always been an SP fan. About a generation too late to see all these gorgeous steam locomotives though. Thank you for putting this together.
My favourite SP steam locomotives are 4-8-4 Daylight #4449 and 4-6-2 #2472! These locomotives operate on excursion trains. The Daylight has made two very-long trips, in 1984 to New Orleans and in 2009 to the steam locomotive festival in Michigan.
SP operated some classy steam locomotives, that’s for sure. We can totally understand why 4449 and 2472 are your favorites. Thank you for watching, MJ!
@@CVisionProductions1 You're welcome. And also SP #4449 is one of the two steam locomotives that traveled to Los Angeles, California for the 50th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Union Station Celebration in April of 1989. Joining the #4449 in the event was the UP #844 [As #8444].
Was interesting to see the 4281 with no road name on the tender. I'm guessing it was on the scrap line, and was pulled out by a motive power shortage. Also interesting is the differences in the warning lights between the 4458 and the 4439.
4472 is a GS1, originally built for Texas And New Orleans as their No.702, later acquired by Southern Pacific in 1953, renumbered to 4404, and last renumbered to 4472. 4472 would be retired from the roster and scrapped on July 9th 1956.
Thank you for pointing that out. Very little updating was done in preparation for this video’s release on RUclips. We usually try to go through and remove anything that isn’t quite right before a program is re-released. Whoever wrote the narration back in 2013 must not have been too familiar with SP’s steam locomotive classes… We’ll just have to rely on you guys for this one!

@CVisionProductions Could you tell me what artist is performing in this video? Do they have a RUclips channel?
The music in this video comes from Bensound. They have quite the extensive library of royalty-free music.
Great video, but I would just like to point out that there is some misidentification of some GS locomotives. 4472 is a GS-8, 4460 is a GS-6, etcetera
4472 is a GS1, originally built for Texas And New Orleans as their No.702, later acquired by Southern Pacific in 1953, renumbered to 4404, and last renumbered to 4472. 4472 would be retired from the roster and scrapped on July 9th 1956.

How cab front engine work how?????
Pumping oil from the tender to the firebox.
@@mikehawk2003 oh I think it work by oil
All cab forwards were oil burners because it's impossible for coal to be used on locomotives of that particular design.

The sad irony of it all is, if those guys were to come back today to see how that part of Bakersfield has turned into what their reaction would be
What happened?
You would have to see for yourself how rundown that part of Bakersfield has turned into all the homeless drug addict and other riff raft there now
What happened to 2248, diamond stack ? Surely they weren't so heartless as to cut her up, were they? Classic old engine. 😢
