It seems like the parents were lavishing Lucy with affection, and ignoring Luna completely. Like how they were praising Lucy with "That's our princess, so talanted!" Right in front of Luna, as though she didn't exist. The cherry on top of that interaction being when you try to talk to the mom and she says, "I'm busy right now Luna, let's talk later." That kind of thing builds resentment. It makes sense why Luna trapped Lucy in the book, it doesn't make it any better or excuse it, but it explains it. It also sounds like it may've been going like that since Lucy was born, from how the woman who gave Luna the book was talking. Though it also sounded like Luna may not have wanted to do it at first, but eventually went through with it, possibly either due to being worn down, or some kind of corruption.

I think this is a classic case of Golden child/Neglected child family situation gone horribly wrong. It looks like the parents didn't pay any attention to Luna before Lucy disappeared. Hell, even when they left and with Luna not being around, there wasn't so much as a, "Where's Luna?" And when they were sitting at the table, it was like Luna was a ghost, going unnoticed by her own family as they lavished Lucy with attention.

@@dalilarocha4562 Luna clearly did have a plate. It was the mother who didn't get to eat, if anything. I think most of the "parents fault" takes might just be projecting. Coming from a very happy family, any of these situations would still make sense in context. When you sit around and keep to yourself during dinner, your parents gonna assume you want to be left alone.
They're not clairvoyant. When they go out to buy a birthday present for your sibling obviously they'll get a bit of a special treatment, especially if you consider that they apparently were dangerously last minute with their birthday shopping and might have been feeling guilty because of it, It being the evening before at just before closing time and all.
We're just not getting enough context to tell if Luna was a target of actual neglect or whether these were cherrypicked moments that Luna uses to cope with the guilt of having effectively murdered her sister. Luna strikes me personally as a hateful person who can't deal with not being the center of attention at any given time.

    • @Пинагод
      @Пинагод 3 года назад +60

@@marzipancutter8144 Okay, calling the other comments as projecting was definitely not the case, they've only immediately assumed that Luna was being rejected as much since she's held this much resentment for her little sister despite Lucy being rather okay to her. Even if they thought you wanted to be alone, Luna is still a growing child that also needs attention, that's how it is in every family, yet the parents only asked how Lucy was going while not giving Luna a chance to speak her day, and speaking to her isn't a priority anymore just because there's someone else now. Calling a child someone hateful is really a stretch, as normally children _can_ be as cruel as this without even realising it. I am too in a happy family, but it was only happy because my parents still reassured me whenever I felt jealous of my new sibling, and I eventually learnt to welcome him, yet with what we see in the video, Lucy is already a lot older and Luna still can't accept her.
It's just cruel to quickly assume that a child can withstand favoritism. Even if what she did was crueler, it was still those actions that made a child gullibly evil.

My theory about the secret ending.
Luna did love her sister, she was just upset with her neglectful parents. When Lucy saw the picture they both decided they were better off without them. So they pieces out together, hopefully to go torment their parents instead.
Edit: the real question is who is that lady who gave Luna the book. She looks like Luna, maybe it's Luna's real mom. They doted on Lucy after finally having a kid that was all their own and to punish the parents the real mom (a witch) decided to gift her child with the means get back at them for neglecting her kid for their own... Or it's Lucy from the future who spent her teen years way into magic because she was tired of being in her you see sisters shadow.

I like the idea that both Luna and Lucy abandoned their selfish parents, THEY are the real bad guys in this story, being neglectful and picking a "favorite" child. It feels like the "good ending" of the game.
About the mysterious lady being Luna's mother, I feel like that's a stretch. After all, Lucy's mother has hair like Luna's, if she weren't her real mother then she would've looked more like Lucy instead of Luna. Maybe the mysterious lady will appear in some other future game by the creator, another story that takes place in the same world, like she's part of the lore.

Do you mind if I piggyback off of this?
If we think about how the game presents (including gameplay) this to us I believe the Luna we play at first somehow was not only able to dive into magic but go between alternate worlds (like she did in the game) where the parents only do favoritism to one kid.
The Luna we play is the one older women who gave the book to younger Luna and started the chain of events. If you think about it Luna did love her sister and most likely resented her parents later on in life. So the ending could simply be saying the sisters finally broke the spell of the book but at a price ... remember, they disappeared from the book world and no one is at the title screen.

I personally think the Secret ending is best but my theory goes this: You know how fulfilling spirits wish makes them go to the afterlife, i think that happend, Lucy went to the afterlife and perhaps her memory came back to the real world because her soul was free from the Book Dimension, while you were let back in your world, because her wish was fulfilled so her book chapter was free too.
    Though there are other cases
As she just dissapeared that doesnt mean she died, so prehaps she was revived, and you came back with her what supports this well its simple, Lucy isint necesarilly dead she is just trapped in the book, and the symbolism where they both dissapeared i think they mightve both been revived
And also Theres still a possiblity that she wasnt exactly the one making the choice, but she was being controlled like a puppet, what makes me think that, well, as you see in the game it is said she looked sick when she was trapping her sister in the book, which makes me think she was possesed by the book itself

    • @ReynaldoP

I would like add on by saying another idea. Maybe them both disappearing means they have rebirthed. By luna showing her parents drawing of Lucy she may have managed break free. I think how this game tackles parental neglect is actually pretty interesting. I don’t have siblings but I do have a inattentive Mother and a dead-beat absent Father. As an adult I realize my Mum wasn’t the best in the whole “supportive parent” department, so in a way I kinda sympathize with Luna, if I was in her position I might want to do the same. She’s a child with horrible parents and saw an opportunity to return to the days when she was happy and loved. Of course there’s no justification for what she did but uless you know what it feels like to be so desperate for love and attention, especially at a young age, you’ll never understand the potential trauma that comes with having parents that don’t care about you

I agree, it’s easy to understand now that I’m an adult, but when I was a child, being the middle child was the worst. You’re simultaneously responsible for your siblings but not the eldest, so you’re not in charge. But you’re responsible, so if they do something wrong, it’s your fault. You’re not the youngest, so you can’t get away with anything either because you need to make an example of yourself for your younger sibling. Essentially, if you wanted any kind of praise in my house as a middle child, you needed to be perfect. Otherwise, you’d always be compared to how perfect your siblings were, even though all their mistakes and “child crimes” were blamed on you. My older sibling has a disorder, and my younger one, while not their whole childhood, had an autoimmune disease. I was the only healthy kid, and with two very young parents who were frustrated with us, the only child they could punish guilt free was me. I understand why they acted the way they did now, but damn did it hurt being called a monster or having to listen to condescending bullshit about being responsible or a role model every time my siblings did something wrong. It really felt like I was invisible in my house, and that I couldn’t do anything right, or at least nothing I did would ever make them love me like they did my siblings. As a child who was in the mindset that my parents approval and love were everything, I was very jealous of my siblings, who were hugged and cuddled with, praised, and given gifts on random occasions. I saw it as their fault that I wasn’t loved or treated that way, even though they really had done nothing wrong. If I was told my parents would love me if I just put my siblings in a book, especially if I was really little like Luna and had little to no concept of death, I probably would’ve done it.

I think this is my favorite theory I’ve come up with/seen.
Luna was clearly neglected by her parents while her sister was praised and held on a higher pedestal. One day someone shows up and manipulates Lunas feelings of resentment, channeling that anger towards her sister.
Lucy is then trapped in the book, left alone with only a deep hatred for her sister and loneliness.
The secret ending shows Lucy realizing Luna isn’t that different from her. In the past, Luna felt like she didn’t exist just as Lucy does now. Luna wanted to be loved by her parents again the same way Lucy longed to.
So in the end, they both disappear in peace because the sun rose and they didn’t get back into the book.
(The final fragment of theory is based on the details, when Luna is first trapped, she’s in a black void later being warped into a distorted version of her home. I’d like to think the book is the void and the distorted home is the regular home but in the eyes of those trapped in the book. While Luna is still in the regular home, Lucy mentions she needs to get back into the book by sunrise or else she will stop existing entirely.)

I think the ending implied that Luna went with Lucy into the other dimension. The screen title is blank after all indicating that no one is there.
As for the message. Morally what Luna did wrong of course but it does seem to be a direct result of neglect from her parents. After all the family interactions made it pretty clear that Luna was more or less ignored by her parents while they had enough time to adore Lucy in front of her. Its also seems like Luna wasn't totally on board with the idea as the woman who gave her the book was whispering honeyed words into her ear about it. Though honestly it seems like her anger was misdirected, as it often is with children. The fault did not lie with Lucy, though in the mind of a child like Luna its easy to see where she could have made that mistake, but with her parents. It was their fault that they put so much adoration onto only their younger daughter. When the child is first born because obviously a baby needs more attention but at the ages they were the parents really should have able to show equal love to their kids... even more so they are terrible parents for not realizing Luna was unhappy. The family picture was incredibly concerning. Not smiling, bags under her eyes, general demeanor suggesting depression.

Poor Lucy. What I interpreted of the Secret Ending was that finding the drawing made Lucy remember her memories and possibly, having Luna stay with her?

I think at the end when the book disappeared it ties more to the "door that you couldn't open" thibg, like Lucy grabbing the drawing is accepting the love of her sister, the same person who made Lucy vanish and loose all her memories, opening her heart would signify a "new hope" for Lucy to come back, and when Luna dissapeared i think is more like regret, regret for vanishing Lucy and regret for being just an awful sister, the book dissapearing is just the story ending, when you end a story you usually never read/watch it again unless you really like it, this story obviously wasn't a story that Luna or Lucy enjoyed so they just moved on, they could have destroyed the book, or leave it in a shelf or atic, idk

I feel like it's the parent's fault because when having a family you need to give attention and giving compliments to all your kids than just one cause that would make the other kid feel like they aren't accepted or loved anymore by their parents which made the older sister jealous from her little sister and caused all of this. If maybe the parents weren't paying so much attention to the little sister and treat one another equally then that whole thing wouldn't happen

This makes a lot of sense in a manner. Since Lucy was born Luna has been ignored, such neglectment from the parents will build up resentment within Luna. I also find it curious that Luna decided to resent her sister instead of her parents. Then again, it seems like Luna desires her parent's attention and affection. So it makes sense that Luna would decide to get rid of Lucy, even if she wasn't completely on board with it. When the woman gave her the book and explained to Luna what it does, it seems like she was nudging Luna to do it. Luna seemed a bit against it at first since Lucy was her sister after all. Lucy never done anything bad to her, in fact, Lucy was the only one that acknowledged her. Lucy played cards with Luna and actively listened and cared about her, unlike her parents. At first, it doesn't make sense why Luna would do this to someone who actually cared for her. Still, the build-up of resentment and being neglected seemed too much for Luna. In Lucy's diary, she points out how Luna was acting strange. So this wasn't just a sudden snap but a gradual build-up to that snap. In the flashback, the father refers to Lucy as "princess" while actively praising her with the mom in front of Luna. Luna felt like she didn't fit in, out of the family. Ignored and such a feeling could cause a motive like that. When Luna tries to talk to her mother, she brushes her off. She was just praising Lucy just moments before and talking, so why does she not have time to talk to Luna now? That's because their parents only cared for Lucy, they see Lucy as their daughter. Their pride and joy, even when Luna was clearly there. Luna would've done it, even if she knew that she'd be getting rid of Lucy 'forever'. Once Lucy was gone, Luna obtained what she wanted, the affection from her parents. Though she remembered the words from the lady, being in the book for too long will transform one into a monster. That one mustn't let that monster out. Lucy had apparently transformed into that monster and while I'm not sure how Luna feels. Regret? Proud? For getting rid of Lucy, it seems like there was no choice for Luna. Either get rid of Lucy forever or let things return to how it was. This time even worse since there won't be a Lucy, there will only be Luna and no one else. Truly alone.
Aajjajajajaja what am I even talking about, I have ELA class right now lmao

Some things I've noticed throughout this game is that Luna bears a heavy resemblance to the book and the one giving her the book. She also wears a moon necklace meanwhile all of the other family members don't have any resemblance to the cards, books or anything at all which could have to do with the secret ending.
Sure, the supposed mom has white hair and the one who gave Luna the book also had white hair but I don't really know what to do with that. Everyone else's faces, except for Luna is blackened out. Even when playing as Lucy, her face is also unintelligible. Only when you get to the next picture including all family members and the drawing of Lucy do you actually get to see some of her face. Of course this might also just be a style or a preference but in the secret ending Luna's face ALSO gets blackened out.
Another thing I'd like to point out is that in the earlier family photo nobody had any resemblance to the card and Luna didn't have her moon necklace. I have no idea what this could suggest but for some reason it seems important.
Also when Luna gets transferred in the book and gets pieces, the only items she gets besides the family photo is the moon and a puzzle piece including a sunflower, nothing else.
Luna's family seems also really song based while she seems to not be as song based. But considering the fact that we don't get that much information about her and just the fact that she was neglected, I don't know for sure. She seems out of place when it comes to the family. Her mom sings and her dad plays the piano. Lucy also plays the piano meanwhile Luna supposedly doesn't do too many musical things.
Maybe a bit of this could suggest that she isn't actually blood related to her family? There are also a lot of other stuff in the game that might point at this too. For example, her having a strong resemblance to the book. Maybe she's actually the daughter of the one giving her the book?
Also in the diary Lucy mentions Luna looking and acting as if she was absolutely obsessed with the book. Could this possibly be because the book affected her in the spiritual sense?
In the secret ending and the normal ending the same drawing of Lucy is shown. The other one being Luna showing it to her mom and the other one having Lucy look at it. I don't know exactly what kind of worth the drawing is meant to show or have. But maybe it's the developer's way of saying Luna still cares about Lucy.
The secret ending is also very vague, but I can try to make a few interpretations. Either one, they both went into the book together. Two, they both came into the real world. I also think there might be more reasons but that's pretty much all I could gather.

Obviously Luna is in the wrong, but you have to realize that she's probably very young. She was neglected by her parents, and any situation in which one child is the "golden child" (overly praised, can do no wrong) and the other child is virtually ignored builds resentment and damages a child's mind. They'll do ANYTHING to get that attention back. In Luna's young mind, her parents loved her until Lucy was born. In her head it was Lucy's fault that her parents didn't pay attention to her, not her parents for being shite parents. I feel bad for Luna, because while what she did was horrific, she was young, neglected, and impressionable. I understand why she would do what she did.

Wow, Luna is just horrible. Her parents may have been playing favorites, but it's possible she was just jealous and served as an unreliable narrator. Even if the parents really did care about Lucy more, it's hard to root for your protagonist when she seals her innocent sister in a book that wipes her from reality. I was hoping for a "bad" ending where Lucy tricked Luna and they swapped places, but I guess the Secret Ending is still Lucy winning. In the family photograph Lucy smiles happily and Luna has no expression, but in the photo where Luna is alone, she smiles. And that is so creepy. It makes me feel like Luna didn't have any feelings for Lucy at all...
Like she doesn't fell any guilt, or remorse. And the end of the game too, after just passing through that experience of seeing her sister, and how she resents Luna for what she had done, it doesn't affect Luna at all, she goes to sleep to supposedly have happy dreams...
It feels like she never cared for Lucy in the slightest... but in turn, it seems that Lucy did care for her sister, and that makes those pictures really eerie.

I think the best way to translate the secret ending is this: When you find the third secret, the mirrored house and go to your room, you find your parents with the book. The normal ending see's you 'escaping' the book in the first place, however the person giving her the book says it turns people into monsters. I think what may have happened, is that they got themselves both trapped inside of the book, yet only one of them was truly aware of it. Time is eternal and their game essentially repeats over and over again, think witch's house. The secret ending is possibly both of them realizing their reality and coming to terms with it and they either... move on, or keep playing or maybe they do escape? It would make sense since one of the secrets is playing as lucy, meaning the sisters can kind of swap places. Maybe I'm thinking too meta in that sense though, but after experiencing meta games for so long, wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Two reasons why Luna did this. One, her parents treat her as a ghost and instead give all the attention to Lucy. Two, why would she not use the book? She would most likely be ignored her whole life by her parents and all she wanted was that love back.

    • @cherilynsarts8845

  • @Kusaragi

I can see why Luna got jealous of her sister, since her mother was so aloof about paying attention to her before bed time.
When you were exploring the "Secret ending" path, you were a shade exploring the books and hiding places. I think that you were diving into the book to get your sister BACK. I think that Luna trapped Lucy in the book THAT day, and the passage of a single night made her go crazy in the book. So by immediately seeing the mistake and trying to Find the sister means that no harm was actually done. You find the happy sister picture in the secret place, and bring her back out. Then you leave the shadow realm as well.

    _Talk about sibling rivalry_
The parents might have been showing favoritism, or it was only in Luna's mind. Either way, I wonder who exactly was evil enough to show her that book. And imagine a child hating their sibling that much to want to imprison them forever, so that they would be wiped from existence.
The secret ending was confusing - maybe she decides to sacrifice herself, deliberately remembering her sister with Happy Birthday on the piano as well as having the picture and perhaps destroying the book because that shelf was empty?.... I really don't know.
I liked the game sorta, but the hide & seek seemed not really fun, the mini-games also not really fun, & the translation was a tiny bit wonky. It's like the game needs some smoothing out. And it was really an awful story lol.
And no, a really good hot dog, steamed with perfect toppings on a poppy seed bun, in summer, at a ball game, with a nice cold beer is as good if not better than any steak. This game was neither.

"The game's rules N' morals can be whatever the creators want it to be! At any given time!" Yea, but now the characters' sense of realism and judgement is screwed and the mechanics of the game seems shallow. (They did not do much world-building or character development before putting everything together, so the story was built upon a weak foundation, though the actual game and art style was fine)

    • @NaturalFlirtGamer
      @NaturalFlirtGamer 3 года назад

@@bensoncheung2801 I'm a little confused by your comment. First - who are you quoting "The game's rules N' morals can be whatever the creators want it to be!" Because whoever that is, they are correct. A game is like any other creation or work of art, whether it's a sculpture, a painting, a book, a movie - it either reflects what the creator thinks or is just something they want to make you think about. There is no right or wrong.
At the same time, as an independent thinker, I don't have to like or agree with what it means or says. It's my comment and reflects my opinion. You can agree or disagree with me, but that won't change my opinion. ??
As I watched the video, my thought was that the story was well presented except for the secret ending - the point of which was was a bit muddled to me. The art was fine, it didn't seem buggy, but I didn't like the mini-games. Because I don't care for arbitrary chases being a main part of the game play, this wouldn't be something that I personally would buy to play and enjoy.

    • @NaturalFlirtGamer
      @NaturalFlirtGamer 3 года назад +1

@@bensoncheung2801 I agree... the game didn't spend a lot of time with the characters for them to develop. Because you could argue that Luna was hurt so deeply by her parents that she wanted revenge. But she took revenge on her sibling, who really didn't do anything. And the biggest thing was - who was the person showing her that book??
I wished for more from the game & that second ending.
