I'd make where each character saw the being, but saw it at least slightly differently! For instance, the humans might see an very androgynously beautiful being, floating above them, robe flowing in the non-existent breeze. Where as elves might see a beautiful elven maiden, with very little on, small leaves or flower petals falling from her fingertips and vanishing before hitting the ground. So mething like that! If obviously plan it a little better, at least, if I were going to make it a noteworthy interaction. And it'd be a waste not to, in at least most campaigns.

I was always thinking about celestials:
Goodness is guaranteed a reward in planes of good, so sending angels to be good but not be rewarded, but punished for their goodness, will corrupt them.
I wrote how a powerful angel trapped the angels in heaven. This powerful angel then fell and walked the earth.
An easy way to write corrupted celestials is to write down an ideal or principal, but being punished for it.
Loyalty? Stabbed in the back. Honor? Piss on your grave. Mercy? They continue their evil. Saving the weak? Killed and forgotten.
Think about a paladin who devotes himself till level 20, and then dies(assuming his soul isn’t destroyed), is sent to heaven, given new gear and told, “here, we’re going back to battle.”
He thought he could retire from fighting, but nope.

This is great. I do this in my worldbuilding. As a Jew, there's also some interesting resonance between angels and dragons. For instance, seraphim comes from the same Hebrew word as for serpent, serap. So for me, I tend to have a lot of overlap between dragons and celestials, dragons as physical shadows of angels from a fall. Beings in their own right, now, but originally a byproduct of angelic rebellion.

It makes some sense of the Genesis serpent too if you grant a celestial nature to it like Christians tend to do: it's cursed to live in and eat dust for its part in Adam's exile, but what did it do before? It flew! Like a dragon.
Anyway, my wife loves dragons, and her patron saint (she's catholic) is gabriel the archangel, so I commissioned an icon of him as a dragon with details drawn distinctly from Jewish tradition, like holding a branch from the tree of souls and the word yesod branded on his chest.

@@shccer2 if you wanted something slightly more nuanced, a single seraphim of a single god is corrupted, in some way or another, and the prayers it sings it twists. It knows it's god, and knows how to compel its god to act. If it's a righteous god, the seraphim sings nothing but prayers for delivery from unjust rule. Eventually the god brings down judgement on somewhere that wasn't asking for it. Other gods respond to this horrific act and begin to attack said deity, but the seraphim was still storing the true prayers it had, and gives them to their god all at once (Something of a celestial WMD as well as a temporary steroid boost) and the forces of the other gods are horrifically repelled. The god of justice sees this as an unprovoked attack, and goes on the war-path.
Other gods begin to do tyrannical shit because if they don't receive enough prayer, they won't have enough power to do what needs be done.
World divides into religious, anti-religious, and fiendish factions, all of them using what powers they have to influence this conflict. Entire villages promising their souls to fiends so they are defended from the Commandments and Judgements, people actively refusing to believe in the gods, hoping to starve them (These people might even do some anti-religious Inquisition shit, as the gods hold deeper sway in the lands of their followers) and other things like that
Divine Post-Apocalypse could be cool af. Early game party trying to escape after the city they spent their first few levels in is Judged, and a seraphim appears above the city, and people start burning. Absolutelly.
From what I got the magical touch poison of the Poison Joke targets "the thing" someone is the most proud off or likes the most about themselfs:
Pinki: her talkativeness or joke telling. -> swollen tongue.
Twilight: her magic or being a unicorn. -> wobble horn.
Rarity: her good looks. -> felt pelt.
Applejack: her strenght. -> becomes tiny and weak.
Rainbowdash: her flying skills. -> gets inverted flight controls.
Fluttershy: her soothing feminine voice. -> Raspy bass sanger voice.
So, if one of the PC's characters is super brave and confident about it, the effect of the poison will have them become a rabbit foot.
If there is an ingame rules lawer, they forget all the rules and constantly break them.
If one of the bardy, i mean party, is a womanizer, he becomes the woman. Or just ugly like the night.
Party-idiot, who thinks he's the smarts alive, gets an IQ of 140 and realizes how impossibly dumb he actually is/was,
fully aware of all the dumb stuff they did in the past, bathing in self shame.
Calm and focused life loving monk goes nuklear Gandhi.
Following that: the quest to find a cure.
Or it's just time based and "heals" over a (few) days.
Though, this plant can also be an enabler for a TPK, if encountered at a bad time and having no cure mechanic.
It should be handled with the same care like the deck of many cards,

I feel like they only mean anything when you stick to this rule. The word "angel" literally means "messenger." There are some theological traditions that think of angels less as "independent servants of a god" and more as "a fragment of a god's essence given form." If you're following the latter definition, then it feels mandatory to make the angels *embody* the forces that their god represents. Besides, what's the fun in making every celestial encounter nothing but golden light? That's just one kind of divine encounter - and it's a big universe out there. The celestial court is an interesting idea for lawful good gods, but I'm curious how the courts of neutral and chaotic gods would be set up.
Maybe neutral is like a communal family and chaotic is based on who is the most faithful?

    • @powerhousejp
      @powerhousejp 2 года назад +17

Well, one thing to remember about the court as shown in this video is that its members aren't individuals, they're essentially "constructs" fulfilling the directive of the god that created them, for whatever purpose that might be. Naturally, a lawful good god would create their "court" in such an orderly way as described in the video, each order given a specific task, but chaotic and even neutral gods wouldn't have a compulsion to create beings that exist purely to manage their other members of the court.
For these non-lawful gods, I'd simply cut out all the middle-management, and then theme the rest of the god's court around whatever aspect the god oversees. Maybe a neutral god of, say, music/song/poetry would reside within a Throne with "towers" like organ pipes and "walls" made of strings/cords, and the Seraph of the court play the Throne like an instrument unto itself while singing their otherworldly prayers to the god in an endless cacophony of every song performed by mortal, everywhere, all at once. Within this Throne, our god emits an endless stream of countless otherworldly, unknowable rhymes, melodies, etc from whatever counts as its mouth(s), never before heard by mortal ears; these...eh..."emissions" then coalesce into the forms of the god's Angels, which float off to the various other planes and take the forms of various muses to inspire mortals to recreate these divinely-gifted songs in their own ways.
That's just a simple example of a stripped down court, but you can add or remove things as needed for any setting. Perhaps this god of music/song/poetry is in eternal contest with an opposing god of...idk, silence or something, I'm not very smart. In that case, maybe our God of Loud has a cohort of Authorities and/or Archangels which might be...idk essences of pure sonic energy, unobservable to most mortals except for the visual distortion from the compression effects of All That Sound, and flinging directed blasts of pure sonic power at their enemies that can turn mortal bodies to jelly and deafen anyone close by to everything except the glorious sound of their godly choir.

Celestials can become problems when their uncompromising demands or expectations don't fit into reality. "The god has chosen you to do this, mortal." "But... how?!" "That's your problem, n00b." The world is made up of nuance and complex interactions. Celestials are not.

Reminds me of Cieth (Chosen one that failed), Falcie (gods) and Lsie (chosen one) from FF13.
A "god" in ff13 can assign a mission to a human. The vision of what to do is vague at best. The chosen human gains powers of that of the god. If the humans complete their mission they are given "eternal salvation" and become a cristal, or they can fail their mission and become a zombie angel.
This actually sounds pretty cool for a D&D campaign now that I say it outloud

I love all of this, When i built my homebrew world I created 13 gods, and use celestials to serve them. A difference for my stuff is most of the gods are so powerful that they have assumed a state of non-sentience and just kind of float in the void eating up prayers that are delivered to them. The celestials in their Courts use the gods as kind of a battery, feeding them prayers but consuming the power and energy's that come from the gods. They also have very un-angel like forms in some cases but still have angel wings, but with feathers of a different object. The Arc-celestial of War has wings where the feathers are made of all manor of martial weapons; Where as the Greater celestial of Meed is a black bear with wings made out of dripping honeycomb.

And maybe you weren’t going for this with the celestials being the focus but like all powerful gods that are a force of nature no way to stop them and them not even realizing or caring about the destruction they cause by a blink or turn. I them being mindless makes them so much scarier because you can’t reason or even plead to them like imagine it’s whole disgusting or horrific form that’s larger than planets and has like millions of eyes and your pleading it to stop it’s destruction and it’s huge horrific eyes just roll over to look at you with no response

I think there was a story with a concept like this for primordials. The gist of it was that the laws of physics and other rules of reality are defined by the primordials believing reality to be defined as such, and not changing in their beliefs in the slightest. Which led to the unsettling realization that if anyone actually managed to _communicate_ with a primordial, causing them to do anything more than just vibe, the entire universe might fall apart.
If I remember correctly, the horror of this realization came from the discovery that one of the primordials had moved. And they had no way of knowing what part of reality was broken as a result of this. All they knew was that reality seemed to be gradually unraveling at the seams.
Which allowed for things like magic to become possible, but only because reality had already crumbled to the point that mortal minds could sculpt it to their will.

On a related note I really think it would be cool to have celestial East-Asian dragons, basically acting as like the angels of Bahamut (or similar dragon gods). They could be like if Kiren were third sphere then Long dragons could be like second sphere. Their breath attack can do radiant damage and they can grant the Wish spell once a year or something *coughdragonballreferencecough*. Steal the Nentir Vale lore for them.
4e's gnomes had been denizens of the Feywild alongside the Eladrin, but had spent generations as slaves under the cruel dictatorship of the Fomorians, cursed fey giants with powerful magical abilities and mystic eyes. These gnomes worked hard, developing their skills with illusion magic and stealth, and ultimately managed to escape - for the most part.
To this day they haven't forgotten their time as slaves, and so their culture revolves around both celebrating their freedom and making almost paranoid efforts to protect themselves. They build elaborately hidden bunker-villages, supplementing artful mundane camouflage with powerful illusions and other magical mind-fuckery effects. They hate slavery with a deep and abiding fury and will do just about anything to avoid going back there. They even have specialist defenders, like the Nightcloaks (Paladins armed with illusion magic who act as a combination of secret police and special commandos to eliminate threats before they can strike) and Phantasm Guards (Swordmages wielding fear-inducing illusion spells to attack the body and the mind simultaneously). They are surprisingly badass little fuckers but without going completely GrimDark, so you can still play a comedic gnome if you want to.

Your pre-twist breakdown of the established lore is also so helpful and well done! I find that part of these videos just as useful as the twisty bit!

Your content is amazing! Not only is it fun to watch and listen to, but its so helpful for DMs to have realized stat blocks for the lore elements. Thank you so much :)

I want to just listen to this video while I’m doing my laundry but the references and art is so good and each point made is so full of content I end up rewatching it 😂🫡

I have something that looks like a mix between a living armor and a puppet (Diablo inspired, but not the hollow clothes look, but more like a pure metal warforged angelic being)
Essentially, a construction made from various metals.
But they mentally influence those around them so they are seen as a angel of whatever race the observer is.
So I think its pretty funny how we seem to have been thinking along the same lines as I recognized a lot from what you said in the video.
    Very cool work!

Oh man. I have been binging your videos for what feels like two weeks straight. To the point I actually said to myself, out loud, "I think I'm sick of Pointy Hat" only to fall right back in because of yt auto-play. Awesome concept and definitely inspires some ideas in me. It may be a long while before I have players strong enough to need your start blocks, but hot diggity do I really enjoy your videos.

If you can get your hands on, there was a series of system agnostic books for RPGs called The Primal Order. It detailed how gods used worship to do things, how they controlled planes, could create stuff, etc. The publisher later devoted most of their resources to this card game nobody else was interested in publishing. It was called Magic: The Gathering. You might have heard of it.

I felt the exact same way. love this. hopefully you make more stat blocks and maybe even more angels. like you could make fallen celestial variants or abilities that would change if they where fallen. thanks for the video and everything else. looking forward to more of your videos.

Thank you. I'm totally not appropriating and adapting this for the campaign I'm building. And in homage, it will have a twist
