After nearly three decades spent in research labs, Kareem now lives at Project Chimps, a 236-acre sanctuary for former research chimpanzees, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Every day, Kareem and other chimpanzees roam the sanctuary's forested, 6-acre habitat and receive varied enrichment activities designed to keep them active and engaged, indoors and out.

Poor creatures..how do they ever recover from what they have endured ..breaks my heart. I am so thankful for organizations like this ..thank you all.
Well if humans would stop buying products tested on animals this won’t happen. Only we can stop the heart break. Humans need to admit other species are intelligent. Right?

Watching this clip is so sad and equally uplifting. We humans thought we had the only right to humanity and emotional thought. Thank goodness this is changing. To watch Kaarem and his family interacting is so powerful as is their ability to overcome what we humans did to them. Well done to all of you at the sanctuary.

Update: Kareem got a job as a janitor and moved to LA.
Who would have thought that Kareem would be so observant watching and learning from the human care givers at Project Chimps. He seems to be the only one in the group smart enough to figure out the use of a bucket of soapy water and a scrubbing brush. This is why Project Chimps is the right place for these abuse animals. It gives them a chance to live outside being caged in labs for experiments. This small discovery shows why Kareem is the rightful Leader in his group of chimps.

Glad him and mates are free, fun to clean and play in the water. My grand daughter likes to do dishes, we make a mess on the floor but we just mop it up when done. Her mom doesn't like to deal with it.

Hi Rally...In spite of his very serious injuries in such an unexpected fight (during the middle of the night), beloved Burrito at CSN Sanctuary in (Washington state) is slowly recovering & doing quite well, & those of us who love him so very much couldn't be happier... *: )*

He probably would already be dead by disease, or another rival male, or perhaps a whole group of males would of attacked him, and ripped and tore him limb from limb, they tend to bite off the digits and face first, then they go after the testicles on another male chimp, it's extremely violent and gruesome. But that's how wild chimps do.

Mary Clynch I’m certainly glad we don’t have to worry about polio and aids treatments are much more effective now with the research done on primates. Would you rather have polio devastate our population? My relative had it and could barely walk during her life, and she was a lucky one. Some have much worse symptoms.

Humans think that they can do whatever thy want to animals. This sanctuary has given hope and created awareness to turn this cruel and unforgiving practice around. Shame on the National Institute of Health and affiliates that did and do this to animals. It was never their choice to be tortured and killed and abused. Shameful practices that need to stop permanently.
