This was a great episode! I remember enjoying the movie when it came out too; but around 2-3 years ago, I came across a used paperback copy of the book and it was better, by far. Without the time constraints of a movie, it gives much greater character detail (such as their pasts) for the owner, trainer and jockey. It also gives a detailed history of how badly Seabiscuit was treated by his previous owner by being dangerously over raced in small money races across the country without any rest and recovery time between towns.
If you're talking about Laura Hillenbrand's book, I agree. I saw a documentary on her book, and then read the book before seeing the movie. I loved both the documentary and her book. The movie was eh.. I especially loved the jockey's story. If I remember correctly, he left home voluntarily with a caretaker at 13 (not 16, as the movie portrayed), so that he could pursue his career as a jockey. The caretaker abandoned him shortly thereafter. He chose NOT to go home, but continued to race wherever he could. It was not an easy life, but he persevered. Now THAT' was a tough man.
One aspect of the War Admiral/Seabiscuit race was S'b's tactic of creeping up on rivals, looking them in the eye, and racing alongside pace for pace until he saw their tongue shoot out the side of their mouth--a horse's way of "crying uncle." Then he'd pound past the horse in question, having crushed its spirit. War Admiral, and Sam Riddle, were never the same again.
Great video as per usual :) Maybe try to avoid using too much of that swiping sound effect. It is quite useful when an image shows up because it allows the viewer to listen while looking away and still get notified when an image appears on screen. But the sound becomes over present when you use it on subtitles too :)
Biographics As somebody who has been watching this channel pretty much on repeat to fall asleep I kindly request you create a playlist for all videos in addition to the ones you already have. This way I can stop waking up to crazy conspiracy theory documentaries after YT does its algorithmic magic. It's absolutely destroying my suggested feed. Thank you.
A great bio of a great horse. If you do another great horse horse bio I would like to see the story of one of the greatest race horses to ever come out of Australia a horse called Pha Lap. He was the equil if not the better of any horse from the USA at the time and a great story the big red fella ran in the US only 2 or 3 times before he died his body was shipped back home and the streets where lined with morrners almost like he was a head of state. He put food on the table of many unemployed families through ileagle off track betting and is a Australian racing hero. Keep up the good work I look forward to future stories.
@@kathrynhamblin2997 Well he was born in New Zealand, but they didn't want him. Everything Phar Lap ever wax came from Australia. If the Americans hadn't nobbled him he would have achieved much more.
“We never know how high we are Till we are called to rise; And then, if we are true to plan, Our statures touch the skies. The heroism we recite Would be a daily thing, Did not ourselves the cubits warp For fear to be a king.” -Emily Dickinson
Loved it. Left this and Balto til last assuming I wouldn’t enjoy them as much. But I stand corrected. Very very good job indeed. Now... can I suggest Phar Lap the kiwi foaled/Aussie raced champ? Too bad I just did. Peace
I was excited to see what you would do with channel. I am impressed not surprised you'd do well but seriously enjoy how you bring their stories to life as it were. Great job. Thank you for your dedication to being factual and just in general your research efforts. Peace
Wish I could have seen him race. He won my heart. I love the movie. Jeff Bridges was awesome, Chris Cooper a winner and Toby McGuire great jockey. I loved the movie. I love horses so this movie was brilliantly directed. ❤
Trainer gives jockey a wooden stake and instructions to beat horse as much as he likes, horse not surprisingly runs for its life and makes lightning fast time..obviously animal welfare wasn't big in the 30's...do it that now and the everyone involved would be up for jail time and fines, the stable investigated and the trainer & jockey banned for life for animal cruelty..Good to see that such thinking progressed!
I’m really not that interesting. After I wasted my inheritance pretending to do “magick” and desperately seeking publicity, I spent a lot of years alone with my cats. Now I post comments on RUclips videos. So, there you go.

I don't care about horse racing at all but that was fascinating.
There's nothing i love more than galloping racehorses 💕
Never heard of him. Fascinating.
Great video as per usual :)
Maybe try to avoid using too much of that swiping sound effect. It is quite useful when an image shows up because it allows the viewer to listen while looking away and still get notified when an image appears on screen. But the sound becomes over present when you use it on subtitles too :)
Loved this. Thank you :-)
Great music too...
America loves a underdog... great true story! 👏
Seabiscuit’s body may have died in the 1940’s, but his legacy, and spirit will continue to run for millennia to come.
Thoroughly enjoyed this!!! Thanks so much!!
Thank you.
I second this!!
Best one yet!!
I love mondays, Visual Politik AND Biographics!
What about Toptenznet?
I was just watching it as you replied hah :D
Awesome.
Another cool horse to do is Sergeant Reckless, she was a war horse in the Korean War.
just what you need to get out of a depression... a race horse.
Really like the sound track! Great video!
$438,000 US in 1940 would be equivalent to $7,712,000 US today.
Omg this story made me cry.... Truth is more astounding than fiction!
The most amazing run by a horse ever was by a filly named Zenyatta. I won't spoil that story should it be done on this channel.
New Zealand.
@@kathrynhamblin2997 Well he was born in New Zealand, but they didn't want him. Everything Phar Lap ever wax came from Australia. If the Americans hadn't nobbled him he would have achieved much more.
I have never liked horses, but this made me cry (and I never cry).
“We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
And then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies.
The heroism we recite
Would be a daily thing,
Did not ourselves the cubits warp
For fear to be a king.”
-Emily Dickinson
Loved it. Left this and Balto til last assuming I wouldn’t enjoy them as much. But I stand corrected. Very very good job indeed. Now... can I suggest Phar Lap the kiwi foaled/Aussie raced champ? Too bad I just did. Peace
excellent story, well done!
I had no idea there really was a Seabiscuit I have the movie called Seabiscuit and I love the movie!
Seabiscuit was an amazing horse. I highly recommend the movie. I don't like horse racing. I'd never race mine. But history is history.
I'd recommend Laura Hillenbrand's book. It's a page turner!!!
the first east cost west cost rivalry
Yes please to more animal bios. I would love to see a video about Phar Lap. Also an amazing race horse story...
Awesome job Simon. Great video.
Great video. Please do more bios on animals! :)
Biographics oooo cant wait!
WONDERFUL!!! I loved this!! And I love what Charles Howard said: "Sir, there will never be another Sea Biscuit'!
Now am sad about a horse who died in the 40s , what is happening to me.
Fantastic!
No idea why, but hearing this story... i started tearing up toward the end 😊
Will you ever do Aleister Crowley? Also awesome Vids as usual
I’m really not that interesting. After I wasted my inheritance pretending to do “magick” and desperately seeking publicity, I spent a lot of years alone with my cats. Now I post comments on RUclips videos. So, there you go.
