Now after Lisa Marie’s death, and he dying so young, poor Lisa Marie had to separate from him for good. Her memoir now coming out October 8th should be truly interesting. 😢❤❤

The acapella version is more intimate. It`s as if Elvis is in your room, sitting next to you.

This song definitely tugs at my heart strings, the words mirror what was happening in Elvis's life at the time. These beautiful lyrics were written by Elvis's bodyguard Red West & the melody by Richard Mainegra. The latter saying that nothing ever matched the feeling he had, when he first heard "The King" sing a song of which he was lucky enough to be a part of. Thank you Nick, for another lovely "Elvis Sunday"👍

This is a beautiful and yet heartbreaking song for sure. Elvis always sings so that you can feel the emotion of the song and it just grabs your heart for sure. I could see that you felt the emotion of the song while he was singing as well. That's the power of Elvis. This was a great reaction and I appreciate the jesting about Clambake LOL! Thank you so much!

Firstly, I'd like to correct those who commented here that this song was about Elvis and ex-wife Priscilla Wagner Beaulieu....it wasn't so please refrain from making further statements to that effect. This song was actually based on Red's own marriage breakdown. He wanted EP to sing it for him. Elvis liked it, changed a few words of the lyrics (he did this quite often to songs brought to him)....the rest is history.
Elvis, as usual, sang it beautifully ✌🏼💯⚡❤️

There is a really interesting article entitled ‘Red West Remembers Writing For The King’ which confirms your comment. It’s too long to repeat but pertinent parts are
Separate Ways came to me from my own situation. Then Elvis had his own situation with Priscilla and that song fit perfectly. We changed it so it would relate to Lisa Marie.
I also brought Always On My Mind to Elvis. He recorded this and Separate Ways at the same time. This was after his split with Priscilla. He said “Man, you’re killing me with these songs”.
Another interesting part is about Elvis not writing songs for which he is often derided (for reasons that escape me). Red states -
Elvis never really tried to write songs. He just didn’t have the patience. I think he could have written songs if he’d taken the time and could sit still long enough. I think Elvis would have come up with more ballads than rock and roll - he had a ballad mind and liked the ballad type songs.

He sounds so good. Written by Richard Mainegra & Red West ( Elvis' body guard). There's' interesting, detailed info about how it came to be. They started leaning the story line toward Elvis' break-up with Priscilla and how it affected their daughter. Mainegra didn't believe Red when he was told that Elvis would do the song -- why would he want to sing about his personal life that was already being dragged through the media. But notice how he still was able to make a joke. Thanks for this.

Elvis said this song was not about Priscilla. The experts about him on Sirius Elvis channel who interviewed Red West state, as Red said, that Red wrote it during the separation from his wife and Evis merely sang it.Red should know and so should Elvis.Fans of Priscilla's like to think it was written about her when Red wrote it but his own wife.

@@margarettaylor8107 Yes, i re-read the way it was written & noticed the problem. I know it was regarding Red's separation & some minor changes in lyrics were made. I am not a "fan" of P nor did I ever care to think that it was written about her. Thx.

This song can relate to any man or women going through a divorce. I found it suited Elvis situation because he was going through same thing. His voice was full off emotion. Love the humming at the end. It made me sad and he had to break the ice to change the mood. Thank you for your reaction. Elvis’s interpretation of every song is so diversified that he makes me happy and sad at the same time. Hard to explain the mixed feelings.

    • @margarettaylor8107

@@MigdaliaTomalinas-os2nz Yes but he sang like that with every mood song, not just this one.Si many think it was about Priscilla Believe me, he moved on.He called her a manipulative diva. She practically bankrupted her and kept at in by placing a $700,000 lien on Graceland in Mar 1977..not something he could love her with.

Haha, I loved your Clambake opening! I’m here for it and anything else that the two of you do together. Separate Ways does however, make me a bit melancholy. Regardless as to why he sang it, or for whom, he never fails to deliver the emotion. I believe that is why we love him so. Through emotion: good or bad, sad or happy, it makes us feel more alive and that is exactly how I feel while in his care. Have a splendid week Nick. See you next Sunday.❤️

Original song written by Red West (one of the Memphis Mafia). Think you missed the end on the rehearsal video when he jokingly sang (referring to rehearsal time) ‘We should be out by now’ 😁🥰. With regard to the lyrics Elvis was reportedly to have said to Red West “You’re killing me man”.

Red was a talented and really smart guy.

You're quite right, this was a very personal song co-written by Red West one of Elvis' bodyguards. It's amazing to me that Elvis could bare his soul like this while his divorce was being picked over by the media. It was the B side of Always on my Mind (quite personal again) when it was released as a single. Totally opposite to Clambake 😂

It was quite thrilling for me and the family to get aboard the Lisa Marie in the early 80s as it was part of the regular tour at Graceland. I distinctly remember the name getting on his jet and learned that it was his daughter's name. We also were able to get onboard the larger private jet he had that was on display as well and part of the tour. They were really nice inside. You could really tell it had a seventies color scheme. Golds and greens. It was really a sensation to know that he and his entourage would fly around the country in it, and there we were, inside it. They must have towed these planes in from Memphis International back in the day through the city and delivered to the parking area of Graceland next to his car collection building dedicated to displaying them. Fascinating and memorable. Enjoyed it again Nick appreciate it.

At this point in Elvis' career he didn't like doing Rock & Roll (" Burning Love" was recorded at this time and he really didn't want to do it). He was more into ballads, which in my opinion reflected the struggles he was going through at this time.
