I thought that was an interesting bit of his backstory. That his father was a counter-revolutionary and that he basically had to take after his father and protect the family. Also makes sense why he isn't a Soviet since they sent him and his family to die in the gulag. He'd have no love for the country that tried to kill them.

If I recall right ,there were several Allied soldiers, who served in Soviet Army, mostly PoWs, who ran away or were freed. Problem with serving in Red Army is that it was renamed to Soviet Army somewhere in 1942-1943, so unlikely an american would be there THAT early.

I’m pretty sure his family was sent to the gulag for anti soviet behavior and he broke out with his sisters and escaped however his dad and mom(not so sure about if mom died or not) did not. Also he may or may not have a degree in English literature and grew up in a soviet society which the manifesto would be very popular and so people read that and might’ve studied it ( I have no clue but it’s the best guess I’ve got) also sorry if I’m rambling on it’s midnight rn and so I’m a bit sleepy

Fun fact: If you read the official TF2 comics, Heavy actually opposed Communism and the Soviet Union. His backstory is that his father was a counter-revolutionary who opposed the Soviet Union, and so him and his family got thrown in a gulag. Heavy ended up saving his mother and sisters from the Gulag when he was just a teenager. When I read this, it gave me a new found respect for the guy.

The best part is is that in the comics Heavy and his family are some of the most anti-communistic people around. They were in a gulag because Heavy’s Dad was an anti-revolutionary. Heavy in his family burned the gulag to the ground and left to the most isolated parts of Russia. The Soviets sent many teams to kill Heavy and his family…none of them succeed. Eventually the Soviets just stop sending men after them because they figured it was a waste of time and resources and Heavy and his family were the only real family in the USSR to have private property and own their own land outside the state. It’s why when Heavy tells his family of his plan to bring them all to America they are ecstatic.
