Chasing Southern Bluefin Tuna 25km Offshore on my Kayak

  • I thought I'd share this video to show that it's not always rainbows and butterflies. A lot of the time I spend hours on the water to come home emptyhanded! Regardless of the catch, I always enjoy being out there. Plus, this trip I set a few personal bests - longest trip in a kayak: 65 - 70km, furthest offshore in a kayak: 25km, and deepest water I've fished in a kayak: around 1000m.

    Wow, that's a ways out! We fish Pacific Northwest rocks for ling cod in big swell ,7ft max. Our Albacore are not in reach by kayak in Oregon. You put in the work to get yours for sure!

      Thanks mate! For me it's all about earning the catch. When all the hard yards pay off it's a great feeling.

    Shit mate your pushing the sport to about the max! you have the motivation to get out to these places and with the time you put in the rewards will come in time as they have before. a 100kg bluefin would be a serious fight to get up interested to see how it would go. Puka shouldn't be far away for you with those km's under your belt. stay safe out there and good luck for next time.

      Thanks Blair. You're right, it's all about the journey mate. Hopefully some of those species will be ticked off soon. Cheers!

    Yikes Greg you've got a pair of balls mate. 25km out on your own on a kayak....that takes some courage

      In all fairness, probably more risk softbaiting on that coastline than out where I was. Like I said, I feel very safe in this yak, and with the weather forecast that day I was confident in the mission. Always a calculated risk 👍🏽

    Be interested to know how you fuel yourself for such a mission. And wonder if you plan to add a visibility kit to your PDL? Congrats on the PR's

      I bring the same food every trip - 3 muesli bars, 1 can of coke, 1 can of creamed rice and 1.5l water. On long trips like this I bring an extra muesli bar, a bag of lollies, plus another litre of water. Also brought 2 countdown muffins on this trip. Fair to say it all got demolished before I got back lol. Can never bring enough food and water on long missions.
      Yes, planning to add extra visibility stuff to the yak. Tried to source a hi vis hat or beanie the week before I left, but couldn't find the ones I wanted. Had a high power headtorch on when it was dark though. Reflective strips will be another addition. Cheers mate

    Do you miss the foot peddles for rudder control when getting pulled sideways snd backwards by big fish? Or has it not been an issue?

    • @gpfishingadventures7834
      @gpfishingadventures7834  2 года назад +1

      So far it hasn't been an issue, but I have thought about that a few times. The foot pedal rudder controls were critical when I caught my marlin, and also for yellowtail kingfish. I imagine if I catch another decent fish, I'll have to quickly juggle the rod between hands to keep the kayak straight. Or I might just fight the fish side on... I guess we'll have to wait and find out what feels right in the moment!

      @gpfishingadventures, reckon there is any room/benefit to installing a retractable stern mounted rudder with some toe pedal controls for this situation? If you're able to find a way of collapsing or streamlining the PDL drive you might get the best of both worlds 🤷‍♂️

      @@NZTatty probably not to be honest. Some pretty big fish have been caught on PDLs and those anglers have managed to make it work. Will resort to sticking the legs over the edge as a manual rudder if need be 😂 looking forward to putting that idea to the test soon lol

    Was wondering if you were going to try this haha. Any idea how far out the boats have been getting them?

    • @gpfishingadventures7834
      @gpfishingadventures7834  2 года назад

      On that day they were getting them at the 900-1200m mark. I was too far south east. They were getting them about 15-20kms north west of where I was...

    • @gpfishingadventures7834
      @gpfishingadventures7834  2 года назад

      100% take a PLB and VHF on every trip! Plus lodge TR with coastguard. There were quite a few boats north of me. Had a few of them checking in every so often on the VHF.
