  • Before 2010, I had never heard of the Havanese dog but now, after 6 years of ownership, I can highly recommend this wonderful dog breed as having a fantastic temperament and a delightful personality.
In Australia, Havanese breeders are rare but if you love a friendly, playful, sweet natured dog that does not drop hair, the Havanese should be high on your shopping list.
Very easy to train (compared to other small breed dogs) and simply the best dog to up keep up with the demand of modern family life.
Terrific with children and visitors, I think you will love this little packet of fun. I hope you enjoy my video.

I have 2 Havanese, Cooper & Holly. Cooper is obsessed. Of course his favorite ball is the squeaky one! As soon as he gets up in the morning he brings me his ball. He must dream of that ball. I love my Havanese babies! They bring joy to my life every day

By far the Smartest dog I have ever had. Potty trained in 2 days with paper towel placed outside and bells on the doors. Loves ringing bells to go and talk to neighborhood dogs or just chase squirrels.
My Oreo is 6 and is still playful like a puppy, takes commands well, and watches dogs on TV and barks at them. He also is a great bird dog! He works the trail back and forth and looks up in the air when the grouse are flushed out. I shave him to avoid matting hair. Very smart he will "go get" each person in the house if you give the name to him. Strangely, Oreo does not like to be walked on a leash, whereas his brother Louie loves the leash but is as dumb as a box of rocks LOL. They are fun to watch playing tug of war with a sock. Great breed for kids and NOT yappy

That’s amazing. My Jago is almost 5 and he trained himself to jump up and ring the Christmas bell on the back door to potty. If he can’t go out (rain, etc) then he uses a pad. He’s always no more than 5 feet from me.

Just got back from a huge fire trail walk with my two. We were rambling along when we came to a section where the road had a huge puddle covering a size of about 4m x the width of the road except for a small dry strip to the side. So I skirt the water and call the dogs to follow and suddenly there is a big splash noise. Puffin, who normally hates getting her feet wet attempted to jump the last two metres of puddle and ended up almost fully submerged! Ha, ha, ha - every day they surprise and delight me. Glad you are enjoying your Havanese too!

My little black female Havanese is a spitfire (8 yrs old) and loves throwing her orange rubber ball around too. I used to live in a place with hardwood stairs and she would go to the top of them, drop her ball, run downstairs and retrieve it, then climb back up the stairs to drop it again; over and over. I wish I had a video of her doing it; so adorable! 😍 🐾
Emmie also loves wading in the ocean, rolling in the sand, and running alongside my bike. She has so much energy and LOVES her people but especially her mama! 💕

I have my first Havanese puppy after a lifetime of poodles, my little Havenese Devil Dog Izzi is nuts! She's been shredding paper for the past week. I dug up some old tennis balls and a squeaky toy my poodles have been turning thier noses up to for a decade or more. The only thing that will get the rubber squeaky toy out of her mouth is throwing the tennis balls...thank goodness I found something to entertain her, other than the big dumb human toy (me).
    On to the next adventure...lmao

Congratulations! You will love it! Lots of love and patience for potty training. Just know that they are incredibly smart but like all puppies, it can take a little while. Your best trick is to toilet time them for the first month or so. When they rise from sleep or directly after food. They toilet. So take them directly outside and say 'toilet' as they go. Then commend them. You end up with a dog that is triggered by you saying 'toilet' which makes for easy times with your adult dog.

    • @aliciaaltair
      @aliciaaltair 4 года назад +1

It's not a breed that does well being left alone for that long every day. People use the term "velcro dog" loosely but in this case it fits. They get depressed being alone. The breeder I got my Hav from won't sell a puppy to someone who has to leave them alone for that long due to outside work or whathaveyou. There are plenty of other breeds that would be fine with it though.

I generally make up a rice cooker full of brown rice mixed with various veg. then mix with raw meat on serving. They seem to love it. Especially Pepper but he is a dog who will eat orange. Hi Kenza, I clip Pepper and Puffin very short during summer and I have been experimenting with different looks for their face and tails to go with the short coat. Right now, Puffin is short all over and looks like a completely different dog which is pretty funny. we had some really crazy hot weather during summer in Australia up to 49° here so we kept the dogs indoors with A/C during the hottest days. Does your Havanese spread out flat on the tiles with back legs trailing behind? Mine do that for maximum contact with the cooling tile floor.

Yes he does! And sleeps all day long. His activities are not the same anymore. I live in Marrakech and it is pretty hot during summer.

The day they get a haircut they go crazy running everywhere and celebrating. I have a video here somewhere of the day Pepper was last given a haircut - I will try to find it. Hilarious. Give your pup a close hair cut and watch him get all his energy back in an instant!

Paddy McCann say no more, I'll take him tomorrow morning. And another thing lol do they keep running around and jumping at your visitors wanting to play with them? is it just because he is still 7 mounths or is it going to stay like that? Thank you so much for your help!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗

The puppy stage is so fun but it all settles down at around 14months old. I'm guessing he is pretty mouthy? That's important to play with them and use their teeth so you can teach them how to bite softly. If he mouths your hands a little hard, say 'OUCH' in a loud voice to teach them. Saying that, Puffin is now 5 and still acts like a bit of a puppy but Pepper is very clam and quiet these days. Thanks for writing. A nice break from work!

I dont have a dog, and I really want one. My dad thinks they're too much trouble. How do I convince him to get one?

Hey there Sean, sorry for the long delay in replying. Havanese dogs are like any breed in that they require quite a bit of time and dedication as they are growing from a puppy to a full grown animal. An undisciplined dog is no fun for anyone but the good news is there's plenty of free videos on RUclips that will teach you how to train your dog. That's how I trained Pepper. You need to train them to come when called and simple commands like 'no' but it's very rewarding to also teach them tricks. To convince your dad you're responsible enough to own a dog, all you need to do is show how committed you are. Why not take steps to save up the money and let your dad know that you're willing to be 100% responsible for your pet. My guess is this is what is holding your dad back from making the decision you would like. Good luck.

Get the Havanese. Super easy to train. They’re known as the Velcro Dog so he’ll be attached to you and leave your father alone. They gave to be near you and let them sleep with you because they don’t like being over 5 feet from you. Also, the Havanese likes to be up high like on the bed or mine likes to lay on the top of the couch sort of as a lookout. As a puppy he tried jumping onto the dinning table until we had a little talk and he stopped. They hate being caged or confined in small spaces. I think they have a natural fear of being trapped. Don’t ever treat them harshly, they don’t wont forget it. Just talk to them and use your index finger to say “no no”. They are super intelligent and easy to train. They always want to please you. Your dad will warm up to this breed.

Great video of these two Havanese! We love our Havanese dog! Same thing, our dog throws the ball herself and fetches the ball, but doesn't bring it back (usually). She will always bring her tug of war toy. Here is a video of our Havanese fetching a ball in our backyard.
