I use a sheer curtain over my direct south window and put everything in the window to get light.. and my orchids are doing quite well and no sunburn spots or anything❤😂🎉
Interesting tutorial on the gongora. I live in the yarra valley and I also like growing the cool growing orchids. My gongora is in flower now. 7/1/24. My favourites are the slipper orchids. I also have arpophylums which grow nicely out in the open.
Really!!! I have one that has done nothing for three years - new growths but not a hint of a bloom! How and where do you grow yours? All ears!!! Thanks for watching!
In Sydney here and my G. galeata has just bloomed for the first time- I swear I've had it here for at least 5 years and last year I moved it outside of the shade house because it seemed like it was struggling. Mine is smaller than yours and only has one flower spike. I hope it continues thriving in the position I've got it hanging in.
Love your videos. So informative and now I know what my Gongora galeata will look like in bloom I can't wait. From the Western Cape in South Africa so a very similar climate to yours Mediterranean
galeata referring to helmet is probably referring to the fused sepals that cover the column, which is not unlike the conquistador morion when viewed from behind.
Gosh, these blooms look exactly like those of your Stanhopea occulata, (remember my mention of hornets?) except lying on their backs and with no eyes! Clearly related to Stanhopea....
I always find it interesting that your flowering seasons are reversed to us in the UK. Mine should flower in about 6 months time here. They grow well here too I grow them with my Oncidium Twinkles however mine did suffer from an Insect outbreak which has set it back. Yours looks a good size, mine is a bit set back and it hasn't really grown much over winter, still got the new growths it developed last autumn so I don't know if yours will be similar for you in the coming months or whether mine is still struggling a bit. I'm expecting the leaves to develop fully over spring (ie now here) which would be a good time to repot it.
@@helloplantlovers a cattleya schilleriana could do that, if its anything like my ghonghora it's the usual pattern of growing the bulbs out for 9 months, flower briefly and start the next growth cycle. It has certainly never had two growth cycles like many cattleyas have so wishful thinking my friend but maybe yours can do it, it's freezing over here at the moment so I'm definetely not keeping it as happy as it prefers.
I've got a few gongoras including this one, I didn't realise it can be grown that cool, I will try putting it in the garden this Summer, Winter here in Holland is a fair bit colder than Melbourne (my home town BTW😀)
She is lovely and so different!!
Thanks for watching!

Yes - not too sure about the growing cycle of mine yet! I hope these growths are done by the end of Autumn - three months!
