Out 5100’s on ‘18 4Runner. I pull a small utility trailer a lot. With the constant couple inches of squat in the rear, the bilesteins started clunking. No leaks but they clunk on every crack in the road. I have air-lift bags to go inside the rear coils but will do when I replace with another brand of shock. Fronts are doing great!
Try replacing the strut mounts if the car has them. A lot of the times that clunking noise could be caused by the worn out strut mount! Happening in my ‘15 Crosstrek now with 180k…still has OEM suspension but getting my hands on the B8 Terrasports soon as well as new KYB strut mounts all around.
@HitchinMitch is bilstein 5100 have any issues so far? And what about ur zinc coated shocks? Did they get corroded after 3-4 winters? Or still hold up? Or did u get them washed up after few winter times?
I went with TuffTruck springs and the Bil 5100 in the back of my Ram. Couldn't be happier. I went with air bags in my last ram and found it made it ride much rougher.

“Soft” in the world of shocks is misleading. Really depends on the spring rate you have on your vehicle. If you have factory suspension, then most likely you have a progressive spring rate, meaning it starts of soft and gets harder. Factory shocks and oe replacements are usually provide an underdamped ride. The initial bump/hit will be dampened. However if you run into multiple potholes and rough roads you’ll soon find out that the other 4 bumps are the ones that feel uncomfortable and uncontrolled. That’s what happens when you have a “soft” shock like Rough country for example.
Thank you for this video just content, I really appreciate it I have an F-150 and I am just about ready well actually I probably in the next month I will be buying new shocks and I will definitely go with Bilstein. Thank you for the good content
Stock shocks/struts on my 4Runner lasted 230,000 miles, and were still adequate. I decided to replace them when doing front end overhaul - again, nothing was wrong with any of the suspension components but I lifted it a bit and installed AM UCA's to accommodate lift and to get caster within specs. One bilstein strut blew up in less than a year of on-road driving. Their warranty is not worth the paper it's written on - the shock is $90, they demand photos (that I provided) but they also want me to send the bad part to them on my dime AND pay for a return replacement shipping if (IF!!!) they (THEY) find it defective which costs you $50. Again, it's the best case-scenario providing they DO find it defective. Otherwise, you are out of shipping cost AND have no strut. Sweet deal. NOT! It might be "german engineering" but it's mexican manufacturing and american "business attitude" towards customers.
Had four Bilstein 5100's on my 2004 Silverado crew cab. One of the rears started leaking after only 4 months. $75 per shock wasn't bad, but still...at least they were pretty!

The 3/4 Fords ride like an empty dump truck. Just looking to soften up the ride as much as possible. I have had Ranchos fail in under 30,000 miles . However mostly I have had them last very well. Maybe I will jump back in and report on the shocks on the F250.

Mitch, I was wondering how you like your AIR RIDE, before and after the install while towing a heavy trailer, just installed mine two weeks ago, I also pull a 10,000 lbs plus Boat, I've seen great reviews on them, front end floaty-ness is the biggest complaint with the F150, Just curious on your experience, Rod
So far the ride has been pretty good. I haven't had a chance to tow our boat yet but it's in storage haha As for my trailer, I had about 3k lbs of drywall in it and it was pretty smooth. Still felt in full control steering wise and barely notice the extra weight in the trailer. Compared to last time I hauled that much drywall without the shocks and air bags.
Honestly, if you are going to put money and DIY it, go with The Bilstein's.
