    Part 5 of 6 - Your recording software likely ships with one or two amazing virtual instrument plugins, you might as well use them!
    Today I'm going to add some electric piano and organ to my song using a simple USB keyboard controller and even my mouse. I'll also show you how you don't have to be able to play piano to harness the power of the modern virtual instrument.
    With some simple MIDI editing and strategic "fiddling" we can get a convincing performance that will subtly enhance our recording.

    This is precisely how I work software instruments into my songs. This is so great for anyone new to this.
    I just wish these videos had existed over the last 15 years as I was blindly hitting buttons trying to work out everything at once.
    You do good work Graham, thanks for all the time you put in trying to help people improve their skills.

    Hey Graham, I just found your channel due to the $300 Studio challenge and I must say you've awaken that part of me that still wants to create music. I'm really thinking of starting my own home studio soon. I've recorded many songs with my band but I've never been in charge of anything but singing and playing guitar and not all the songs we recorded make me feel proud anymore since I've improved as a musician and writer, and some of the songs I wrote are not what I wanted back then so I'm considering re-record them by myself. Hope everything turns out well. Great project you got here! Greetings from Mexico

    Excellent✨ The takeaway tip for me here is to vary up the choruses by adding elements for additional interest and song arrangement progression (i.e. not having all the choruses, or even verses, the same).
    Great job Graham 🔥🙌🏾😎💫 much thanks 👊🏾💥

    Thanks for this info I am not a huge fan of keyboards or virtual instruments but my Focusrite 2i2 bundle came with pro tools first and all of the templates have midi drums, bass and, organ parts so it is something i am going to have to play with for sure. Your videos have made me think about arranging and layering in ways i never would have thought of on my own.

    When I heard the organ by itself I was like "nah - that sounds wrong", but with the mix it really fits in and sounds right. Takeaway here is not to discount an instrument until you hear it with the mix.

    As for you, Graham, if you keep playing virtual instruments regularly you will be more able to play things spontaneously. That sounds logical, but I think it's pretty easy to learn keys, and the actual difficult part isn't creating the music but the technique and finesse that the serious players have. - I mean, you already have a musician's mind, and it's just a matter of coming up with notes and chords by feel, just like playing guitar or anything, but then you just have to find your way around the keyboard.
    I've been there, not knowing where the heck to go, but I knew in my mind what I wanted to hear. If you just get an idea of where the notes are in relation to each other, just like throughout a guitar's neck, it's not that daunting or confusing anymore.
    You and I might not become the next Jordan Rudess, but if you're a bit of a musician you'll find keys aren't that hard.

    Dont forget about guitar midi controllers. I own the Fishman Triple play. Its great. Easy to put on guitar. No wires. Just a small usb thumb stick. It track very good and I play real real fast and it keeps up with me. Not bad on the price either.

  • @michaelangeloh.5383
    @michaelangeloh.5383 7 лет назад

    It should be added that you can also learn a lot from playing around with virtual instruments and a simple keyboard, both as a musician/composer, and even mixing different instruments or sounds. - I started out filling in MIDI by mouse first, and it was already a whole new world. But then I decided to get a simple and rather cheap MIDI-keyboard to make things easier and more direct, and it expanded that world even more. - What's great is that you can find a lot of great free or more affordable instruments. Maybe not if you're looking for realistic emulations or samples, you'd have to pay a little to a lot more, but there's a lot of goof free stuff out there. Especially synthesized stuff that some companies/people just program and ask little to no money for.
