Fun fact : he performed this song on the national french news which shocked the whole country. The suicide prevention hotline recorded a huge boom in calls, psychiatrists are thanking him because there's a huge taboo around suicide here and his song participated in liberating the parole.

I am Belgian and can assure you that Stromae and his team is the very best of what my country has to offer musically. Belgian sense of humour tries to make everything speakable and confront difficult issues with a vail of lightness. Stromae and his family are the most beautiful example of what our society should grow to become, an eye and understanding for every individual, respect for everyone’s feelings, we are all part of humanity, but none of us are perfect, so we should not pretend to be better than others, we all struggle from time to time. So treat others the way you would like to be treated, with gentleness, patience and respect.

  • @fobgrvt

For me Stromae isn't just a singer, he's a performer. He puts so much effort into his songs.
And it's not just the lyrics of his songs (and the play on words he likes to us). It's the whole package. In the official video and arrangement, you just feel the dissonance between the periods of being mentally "stable" and how fast you can slip back into your depression. Once you get stuck in your thoughts, it's really hard to get out of that state of mind.
The entire album is so emotional and relatable. You should listen to the last 2 songs of the album (mauvaise journee/bonne journee) and compare them to each other. They basically describe the same day, but in the first one everything feels like it goes wrong, while the other everything goes smooth.

Love that you did this one. Anything Stromae does is different from what you've heard. And you were right. There were some faults in the translations. His official videos do also come with English subtitles but maybe if they get blocked the message will get lost on non-french speaking. And the messages are always strong with Stromae.

the thins that makes stromae so unique is that he uses influences from all over the world from all his travels and experiences and puts it in his music. If you have the ear you can recognize African drums, South American sounds, European all mixed up and if you listen carefully you'll realize you can't put his music in one particular category or genre, there is a bit of everything yet is sounds like no one else, so beautiful

My boss heard me jumped in her car and confronted me right away, made me clarify what I met. At that point I broke down and told her that I wanted to end it. that I kept fucking up and wasn't able to provide like I wanted for my daughter, and that she would be better without me.Thats when she told me that her dad had commited suicide and that she wasn't better off without him. In the music video (which had a better translation I think) there’s a scene where he hits himself in the head repeatedly. It resonated. Pain is lonely. Even if you and others are feeling pain with each other, your pain is yours alone, & no one can take it from you. At least not permanently. Maybe the can give you a pill that gives you some relief, but it’s temporary. When the pain doesn’t stop you start to go mad. If you’re in mental/emotional agony, physical pain sometimes distracts you. You’re trying to figure out how to live through it and wondering, what if it doesn’t end. Knowing you can only survive feeling this for so long. You’re battling yourself. Your survival instinct vs your need to make it end. So this song + video does an excellent job of describing this.

Stromae's father was killed in the Rwanda massacre and his mother didnt tell him for a long time, causing a massive shock to a young teenager at the time, you can study the lyrics for the famous Papaoutae
From here he started creating music, giving us his first album Cheese, getting him signed with a larger production company.
The then released his second album which went crazy, massive fame and money for someone very humble takes a very negative toll on him, and here he goes radio silent. Battling with mental health for years and finally coming out with his latest 2 songs and an album out this month. During the times away, he did get married and had a child.

like said in some messages, Stromae got side effect from vaccine and went to deep depression. He also was tired as he worked a lot in different domain.
If you look closer you will see that he thinks about everything, the lyrics, the music, the danse, the clothes, the video, everything is built as a masterpiece. If you go to his videos, you will see much different countries commenting, from south america to russia, even they don't understand french, they get what he wanted to give with his songs...

Great reaction! It's really cool to see you react to a song in my native language! But you are correct, some of the translation don't make total sense but it's really hard to capture the little nuances in French laguage when translated to english. For those interested, I'm going to post my own translation below, which I think is slightly more understandable.
I'm not alone to be alone
That's one less thing to think about
If I were to count how many we are
    Many (a lot)
    Everything I've thought about
A lot of people already thought about it
Despit this I still feel alone
    Therefore (so)
    I sometimes had suiciadal thoughts
And I'm not proud of it
Sometimes we think it's the only way to make them quiet
These thoughts that make me go through hell
These thoughts that make me go through hell
Am I the only one that has a tv?
    And the Guilt channel?
But you need to find a way to change your mind
    Not too much, though
Otherwise it quickly starts again inside your head
And that's when I'd like to forget everything
    Therefore (so)
    I sometimes had suiciadal thoughts
And I'm not proud of it
Sometimes we think it's the only way to make them quiet
These thoughts that make me go through hell
These thoughts that make me go through hell
You know I thoroughly thought about it
And I really don't know what to do with you
Precisely, thinking (getting in your own head)
That's the actual problem with you

Dear Tom, I am so glad to see such a good use of internet: exposing art and deep thoughts thus liberating the speech and opening positive interactions.
Now you know the lyrical meaning of "L'enfer" I suggest you watch the music video I'm sure you'll find as brilliant and telling as the music alone.
Stromae has already touched other deep mental issues as the father's loss in "Papaoutai".
Last, I would love to see you react to "Sun Goes Down" by Lil Nas X. This artist crushes fears, stereotypes and social barriers like no one before. I guess you will approuve the message and be interested by his ability to play with his audience's emotions and projections. And he is a fan of Juice WRLD...

Given the content of your channel, Stromae is the perfect artist to study as every one of his songs carry a very strong message. His Papaoutai is the effect of growing up with a father who was absent his whole life. He actually died when Paul (Stromae) was just 2 years old, but his mother told him that dad was working. He didn't find that he'd does until much later in life. It's the perfect thing for you to analyze on this channel - and it is available with captions.

As for as I know, stromae has been one of the most popular french speaking(singing) artists in the world especially some years ago like 2016-2018. Then he took a break from music and came back with l'enfer which was a big deal in Belgium and France. Obviously the song has a lot of meaning and Stromae got all over the news again spreading the message that mental health needs attention and. Hello, I'm french-speaking belgian with a background in French-English professional translation. I've seen many variations on the translations for this song and none of them sounds quite right to me. So here's my professional take. Is it perfect? No. No translation ever is. Doubly so here, because Stromae's lyrics tend to have double or triple meanings in many of his songs. But it's a damn sight better than what I've seen on RUclips. Make of those what you will. Enjoy.

The translation is fairly accurate. Stromae changes POVs and voices and sometimes it can get a little cryptic, but that's just the way he writes the songs

Not sure if you'd consider watching his music video for his songs since he often puts the subtitles with them as well. The videos are such works of art, the video pairs with the song so well, for me it does capture almost like the internal struggle/screaming going on in your head

The song is very powerful (even more so in French as someone has already pointed). The clip just adds to that! You should definitely watch it!!!

I'm sure someone must have mentioned but Stromae was touring Africa and in particular Rwanda where his father was massacred when he suffered a severe mental health altering side effect to an anti malaria drug. Larium, I think. Prior to that he was never out of the spotlight and continously on tour.

There are some weaker moments in the translation but the point where you pointed it out was quite well translated. I don't know about english, but in french we use the "you" when we talk to ourselves, often to berrate ourselves when we're alone. Like we drop something and exclaim "damn you really have two left hands" talking to ourselves.

I’m not sure if anyone explained this yet in the comments, but the subject matter comes equally through the visuals in the video. Stromae is a master in conveying visually what’s going on in his music. Also, I think the second part of the song is actually someone else who is judging him, making him feel worse… just an opinion, but I think you can see i that in the video. It’s especially clear in the premier video of this song, which happened during the evening news on a major French channel.

I'm not alone to be alone
J'suis pas tout seul à être tout seul
It already makes that less in the head
Ça fait d'jà ça d'moins dans la tête
And if I counted, how many we are
Et si j'comptais, combien on est
    A lot
    Beaucoup
    Everything I've ever thought of
    Tout ce à quoi j'ai d'jà pensé
To say that many others have already thought about it
Dire que plein d'autres y ont d'jà pensé
But despite everything I feel all alone
Mais malgré tout je m'sens tout seul
    Therefore
    Du coup
    I sometimes had suicidal thoughts
J'ai parfois eu des pensées suicidaires
And I'm not proud of it
    Et j'en suis peu fier
Sometimes we think it's the only way to shut them up
On croit parfois que c'est la seule manière de les faire taire
These thoughts that make us live through hell
Ces pensées qui nous font vivre un enfer
These thoughts that make me live through hell
Ces pensées qui me font vivre un enfer
Is it only me who has the TV
Est-c'qu'y a que moi qui ai la télé
    And the guilt chain?
    Et la chaîne culpabilité?
But you have to change your mind
Mais faut bien s'changer les idées
    Not too much though
    Pas trop quand même
Otherwise it goes quickly in the head
Sinon ça r'part vite dans la tête
And it's too late for it to stop
    Et c'est trop tard pour qu'ça s'arrête
This is where I would like to forget everything
    C'est là qu'j'aimerais tout oublier
    Therefore
    Du coup
    I sometimes had suicidal thoughts
J'ai parfois eu des pensées suicidaires
And I'm not proud of it
    Et j'en suis peu fier

These thoughts that make me live through hell
Ces pensées qui me font vivre un enfer
These thoughts that make me live through hell
Ces pensées qui me font vivre un enfer
You know I have thought carefully
    Tu sais j'ai mûrement réfléchi
And I really don't know what to do with you
Et je sais vraiment pas quoi faire de toi
    Exactly, think
    Justement, réfléchir
    That's the problem with you
    C'est bien l'problème avec toi
You know I have thought carefully
    Tu sais j'ai mûrement réfléchi

I the last part of the song, he is talking to himself as if it was someone else.
    - I've thought deeply about it. I don't know what to do with you.
    Then the other self answer.
    - Precisely, thinking. That's your problem. (you keep thinking about it)
My interpretation if I read between the line:
Sometimes I try to ignore those thought but they are never really gone. But if I try to shut them, they become all I think of. Stuck with two opposite voice, both make me feel terrible.
