I really admire people who are photographers (whether professionally or hobbyists) and parents at the same time. My mother had a deep desire to learn piano but I could see how parenthood took away the time and focus needed to make meaningful progress. Thank you for talking about this very real thing - people should feel like they have space for creativity and the strategies to make it happen. 💝
Thanks Justine! It's something I don't see many people talk about actually, there's almost a guilt associated with wishing you didn't have the commitment and had more time to spend pursuing your passion.
As a parent we have duties we must carry out according to our status in life. These need to come first. And so I go to work everyday. Our spouse, eventually, will bring out the best and worst in us because they will know us. This marriage journey is the spiritual journey and it's how we heal our wounds, first by opening them, debriding them (sorry I'm a veterinary surgeon by trade) and then repairing them. This is exactly what the spiritual journey is and why it is so hard sometimes. But it's also what drives our creativity and gives it meaning. Don't be afraid of the hard yards, the rewards are eternal.
I absolutely love this video - I thought I was the only one who felt like this was a real problem. It really resonates with having a young family and a demanding job, however you offer some great advice! So glad I saw it 👌🙏
Thanks Stuie. Definitely not just you. If there’s anything I’ve learned from making these videos, it’s that no matter how isolating or weird my thoughts and feeling may be, I’m never alone with them. I hope it helps!
This totally resonates with me. I discovered photography two years ago at 34. I've got a challenging job and two small kids. It's frustrating that I don't have the time to do it as much as I would like to and develop faster - if only I discovered photograpy earlier :-D
I feel your pain!! Hang in there, it does slowly get better. I know you are probably saying it slightly tongue in cheek but try not to think about 'wishing you'd discovered photography earlier' too much. That ate away at me for far too long!!
Great video on a great topic, Rick 👏🏻👏🏻 you are certainly not alone in your previous/current thinking. I know, myself with work and our almost two year old, I barely even get to even think of going out with the camera. Like you I have been trying to just bring the camera everywhere we go just to have it on hand in case. Luckily, my lovely wife is on board and always asks before we leave to ensure I have a camera on the ready. Keep up the good work. Definitely have a great channel here, Rick.
Thank you for this video, just what I needed. I'm thinking about my online presence, what I'm going to do with my photos, etc. I usually don't really have a problem with going out for photography, and I often have my camera with me, and always my phone that takes more than decent photos. It's more the editing that makes me procrastinate. Because I have too many photos I think. I've already decided not to take my camera with me when the weather is grey, as I really hate editing these photos and they make me procrastinate terribly. Trying to say much in a few lines and there's so much missing, but I really appreciate what you're saying here and I'll keep it in mind. Weather conditions don't look good the coming week so I won't plan in a session, but I went out to take photos this morning 🙂
Great video Rick, so very true and you've highlighted my biggest conundrum. I also plan to go out tomorrow, might even be back to a woodland that I can get to easily on my lunch break. Videos like this and speaking to fellow photographers are always what drives me to pick up my camera and get out. It's a bit like when I used to have a gym across the road from work and actually talking to co-workers about routines and exercises would spur me on even more. Although I think photography is much more enjoyable than the gym haha.
@@RickBebbington I did into the back garden with the Macro lens as when I was about to leave the heavens opened and I chose not to get absolutely soaked on my lunch break. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!
A great narrative as per usual Rick well done and highlighting exactly the steps we take even without knowing that we are taking those steps. I’m heading on a shoot right now to a place that I know you know well enough.😅
Well done Rick ! Time management with photography is a huge hurdle to overcome and when you add video editing into the mix well 😳🤯But you’ve got it right you have to make the time just like anything else that means something to you …keep em coming and look forward to your newsletter..Best Art
Yeah, making these videos massively reduces my photography time (I still can't do both together!!) but I enjoy doing them :) thanks Art, appreciate it as always 👍🏻
I'm glad your advice n video. I'm busy daily life wt work n only time I hv Saturday to get my camera walking wt me. I'm new in photography n I enjoy a lot. Thank you
@@RickBebbington I remember those days well. Enjoy them, as the kids soon move out and once you are left with an empty nest, it's a little strange. The best thing in life now is spending time with my kids and girlfriends. Keep the videos coming. Greet content.
I’m out tomorrow (fog!) and I’m agonising which part of the Lake District to go, what image do I need to improve on, do I go for a new location! 🙈😂 it’s all nuts really Rick! ❤ the vid!
I enjoy how you attack common problems and give honest open solutions
Thank you so much!! I always try and think 'what did me of 10-15 years ago need to hear' and go from there :)
I needed a kind, poke-in-the eye about my photography. Thank you!
Hope it has helped!!

Thanks Tony. That last sentence has really stuck with me 🙏🏻
They are exactly my problems! The biggest one that I can’t keep up with, I’m way behind and I give up. ❤
Start small, and just do it for yourself. Then there’s nobody and nothing to try and keep up with. Good luck!

I appreciate your comment Adam, thank you. Glad you got something from the video :)

Thank you Andy, that really means a lot. That’s great that you have a reminder, I might suggest a similar thing to my wife!

In the pandemic years, what really helped me to shoot more was to just have the camera at my desk always at hand.
And that still helps.
Even if it’s just to subtly remind you… ‘I’m here, use me!’
@@RickBebbington Indeed!
Thank you, Rick. This is a must watch video for all creatives or for all people in general. Cheers to your journey and taking us along for the ride 🙌
Thanks, hopefully people can get something from it :)
I feel you! Keep it up man. Best regards from a Portuguese photographer
Thanks 🙌🏻

Thanks Rob!
Good advice. I'm going out in the Cairngorms Scotland tomorrow morning. Hopefully the grey weather will give good moody highlights.
Have fun!! Even if it doesn’t, I’m sure it’ll be more fun than driving children between swimming lessons 👍🏻😂
