It’s really refreshing to hear someone point out the intricacies and brilliance of a kiss performance for a change. They’re underrated as musicians and songwriters.
Paul Stanley on vocals, Gene on bass, Bruce Kulick on guitar, Eric Singer, on drums. Eric Carr, who died in 1991, played the drums and bass for the studio version thats on Creatures Of The Night
One of the best on unplugged. Im not a musician but i seen how difficult it was to go from rock music and amplifiers to break it down to this. It was beyond awesome. Bruce Kulick was great.
Paul Stanley - singing and guitar Gene Simmons - bass Bruce Kulick - Lead guitar Eric Singer - drums Paul is one of the most underrated vocalists and about this time period was probably one of the best rock singers with an incredible range. at the time of the recording of the Creatures Of The Night album, which this song was released on, Paul had previously been dating Donna Dixon. Little did he know that she was also dating Dan Akroyd at the time, but he found out when he was watching Entertainment Tonight and they announced her engagement to Dan on air. This inspired him to write the song. I think that's why it has so much emotion. As far as the different lineups, no line up is "the real KISS", there is the original lineup and the others that succeeded. Each lineup had something unique that they brought to the music. As a true lifelong fan, I like every lineup and can appreciate what each musician brought to the group
This is the best Paul's voice was at its peak. While the band had changed several times by this point, they was tighter and so experienced and seasoned. This is the line up of Eric Singer on drums and Bruce Kulick on guitar. This is one year before the reunion tour when Ace and Peter returned for a full Make-Up tour. IMO best tour they ever had. I will once again ask for you to react to something live from reunion tour Live, Rock and Roll All Nite or Detroit Rock City. Once again at their peaks musically and all their vocals was absolutely perfect.
Fun fact about Paul Stanley: In 1999, Stanley starred in a Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera,[32] in which he played the role of the Phantom. He appeared in the musical from May 25 to August 1, and again that year from September 30 to October 31, 1999, closing the show's ten-year run in Toronto. -wikipedia
They took off the make up in 1983.Ace Frehley & Peter Criss left to have solo careers in '80 & '82. It was this Unplugged that got them to put the make up back on & do a reunion tour in 1996."Psycho Circus" was KISS album w' original members."Nothin' To Lose" is a great live version on this Unplugged. All members of the band came out & did a few songs Eric Singer on drums.Bruce Kulick on guitar
To say Ace & Peter left to have solo careers is a nice way ofputting it. One was a complete boat anchor by the end of 1979 and was let go. The other, Ace, could barely function by the end of 1982, let alone be in a band. Doesn’t take away from their importance and success to the band in the first 5-6 years, but if it was keep them in the band at any cost, the band ends by 1982.
@@garrypeak4277 I had to shorten my comment, because RUclips wont let me go into great detail.3 sentences is about the limit before they erase it completely.I know others like yours can go further
Check out the whole Unplugged show if you get the chance. Later in the set they bring Peter Criss and Ace Frehley out for the last few songs, the first official reunion of the original four since Peter left in 1980. This would lead to the Reunion Tour, and them putting the makeup back on for the first time in 13 years.
Im glad you loved this!! So yeah Paul on vocals, Gene on Bass, Bruce Kulick on Lead, and Eric Singer on drums. Eric Singer is the most current drummer of KISS with the makeup on as well. He has amazing vocals and drum ability too. He replaced Eric Carr after his passing in 1991 (rip). Bruce had his own unique sounds and was with the band throughout their whole non-makeup era (1984-1995). Both of them are EXTREMELY TALENTED!! I highly recommend and request you listen to the Creatures of the Night album after listening to this!!!
🎶😊💜 LOVE this version too!! Apparently Paul Stanley wrote this song after a break-up with actress Donna Dixon. She left Paul to date (and marry) actor Dan Aykroyd. Saw Kiss in 1985 (with makeup) and they KILLED IT!! 🎶💜😊
@@mamakath1966 all good. Not big on the era without the makeup but they did write some very good songs. I Still Love You being one of my favorite all time Kiss songs
This was the first unplugged I remember seeing. After that this was first the Kiss CD I ever owned. I wish that they would have done a world tour like this but that never happened. What got me Into kiss was kiss meets the phantom of the park after that I saw this. And then they did the kiss reunion tour f**king incredible. Thanks mom for getting me a ticket to see that show and for getting me the kiss stuff I wanted ❤.
Eric Singer the one playing drums on this song came after Eric Carr: Singer played for Black Sabbath / Badlands / The Brian May Band and of course KISS. My favorite drummer for KISS has always been Carr. RIP Eric Carr. He passed away when I was in High School so sad.
Yes, RIP Eric. In those days before the internet, I didn't learn of his passing until Revenge was released (who's that blonde guy?). Of course his passing was overshadowed by that of one Freddie Mercury...
The lineup on this was Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick on lead guitar, and Eric Singer on drums. This is the song that I consider to be their best power ballad.
As far as "Unplugged" shows go, this is up there 👍 one of my favorites. Only 3 other shows can compete: A.I.C, Queensryche and Tesla's Five Man Acoustical Jam
One of their best songs! My top 5 KISS tracks: 1 - Detroit Rock City 2 - I Still Love You 3 - Not For The Innocent 4 - I’ve Had Enough 5 - Keep Me Comin’
This is my favorite MTV's unplugged concert and possibly one of top 5 favorite concerts I've seen - on screen or in person. Of all the MTV's Unplugged I've seen (and I've still got a 30 on VHS) - I think KISS, Paul McCartney, and Sting (and - begrudgingly saying this - perhaps Pearl Jam) - took the event most seriously preparing versions of their songs for it, not just playing the usual only accoustic. There were two more ballads in that concert and these are my favorite performances of "Every time I look at you" and "Going blind"
That looks like Eric Singer on the drums, but I'm not 100% sure. I do believe he was with them for a while. He was a great drummer, played with a bunch of people. I kinda forgot how good this song was. Didn't take long to realise I preferred Stanley's tunes over Simmons', but this one was really out of the mold for them. And was greatly improved, like a lot of bands, by doing the Unplugged thing. What a great series that was.
@@josephlinnell9855 Thank you! I always thought Kulick got a raw deal, but he wasn't the only one. When you treat bandmates like employees, that doesn't foster a lot of brotherhood, I think.
If your going to do a reaction on Kiss Unplugged please check out the song Nothin to Lose when all the band members from the past to the current then it went to a Flash back moment to lead into a Reunion Tour which started at Tiger Stadium in Detroit for a couple of years until the whole Psycho Circus 3D concert and then went down hill until they went to Sydney AUS for KISS ALIVE IV with the Symphony playing and Peter Criss joins them again.

Ericc Singer on drums...4 years later he would put the CaT makeup for 20 years or so...Bruce Kulick lead guitar...this is Bruce final tour....KISS RULES
Kiss is awesome. Different eras and different members but the core members Gene and Paul has always been there. Check out the 1983-1996 era, its super great also!
💥⚡KISS⚡💥 is so huge , yes these guys had a gimmick , with their makeup, and their pyro , live performances , but they were good songwriters if you really check it out their catalog is huge I mean it started like in 1975 to 2023 I think they did their end of the road tour which really started to try to end in 2020 but covid messed it all up , but ended up ending the 2023 👍🏼🤟🏼💪🏼💋⚡💥🇺🇸🎯💯🔥🍎
Just need to remember that it will always be Paul and Gene, it's their band. Also have a listen to A Million To One from Paul's solo tour back in 2006.
The Unplugged night was probably the best Paul's voice ever sounded. He was amazing that night!! You should check out some other songs from that show like "Nothin' To Lose" and "Rock N Roll All Nite" with Peter and Ace joining them on stage. It was incredible and launched them into a reunion and bringing the makeup back.
This is Paul Stanley at his peak vocally. If you would have seen them live in the last 10 years, Paul's Voice is just a shadow of this. But it happen to MOST singers as they age, there are exceptions to the rule, but Paul surely did.
KISS were more of a band without the makeup but that doesn't mean Im saying they weren't a band in makeup either . They are talented all round as musicians and as performers .
I remember something that really blew my mind concerning Paul Stanley and how pro he is. A show in Australia I think, around 1982, he played the hit song "Shandi" only him on guitar and it was so freaking good. I think that had an issue with equipment, and he filled in while the issue was corrected. I highy recommand, the video is on you tube.
The original is from the Creatures of the Night album. That album gets overlooked but there are some fantastic songs on that album, My favorite being Saint and Sinner.
This tune is off their Creatures of the Night album. 1982. Last with the makeup until they put it on again for the reunion. The album cover has Ace on it but he didn’t play on the record. Different guitar players are on it with Vinnie Vincent coming on board, playing some lead and doing some songwriting. He was on the next record, Lick it Up, their first without makeup. He was fired after that tour. Bryan Adams actually cowrites a couple tunes on Creatures. It’s known for its big heavy 80s era rock drums sound. 2 of the best 80s KISS records are arguably Creatures of the Night and Lick it Up. Creatures is a big fan favourite even for a lot of the older 70s diehards.
Ace Frehley has said, and I agree, that its harder to play lead on an acoustic guitar vs an electric. I have to tip my hat to him and to Bruce Kulick on this session because they both stayed faithful to the old solos originally played on electric guitars. I'm not sure what other Kiss stuff to recommend. Revenge was a great album, heavier than the 70s and early 80s stuff. After that was Carnival Of Souls, which went in an even darker direction than Revenge. Other non Kiss songs: Aerosmith: Woman Of The World Thin Lizzy: Cowboy Song Megadeth: The Doctor Is Calling ZZ Top: Waiting For The Bus Jimi Hendrix: Drifting Grand Funk Railroad: Bad Time Misfits: Don't Open Till Doomsday I know I might get a lot of shit for this, but Lana Del Rey's "Ride" is a great song. The video is like a mini movie, sort of like MTV videos were back in the day.
Wow, this was Paul at his very best, imo!! Fantastic vocals, and the song wasn't too bad either. I never knew they did this performance. It was cool. I'd love to see more of it. Gene and Paul were the main lead vocalists. Peter and Ace took vocals on songs sprinkled in here and there. Some of my favs are Gene's vocals. That dude is wild! And recently I learned on another channel that there are 5-string and 6-string basses these days. Now, I learn there are acoustic basses also! What have I been doing for the past 30 years or so?
Thank you for doing the reaction for this song. It was great seeing your reaction to it. I just sent in a donation for another KISS reaction “god of thunder” live in Detroit 1990. Hopefully we will get that one here soon. :)
Thanks Brett! Loved this one! Never seen them perform without their makeup so it was fun for me! Try to get to the other one as soon as I can. Have a few others I have to knock out first. Have a great one!
By 1982 KISS was all but dead. They were playing to half arenas and couldn't even fill that and album sales tanked. In 1983 they took off the makeup and appeared without it for the 1st time live on MTV. That restarted their career and put MTV on the map. Suddenly, both were relevant. They actually sold more records in the 80s without makeup than they did the 70s with it. The 90s came around and they were about dead again (as every rock band was because of the rise of grunge). After 92's album, Revenge (which I think is their best album), they started doing official KISS Konventions where all sorts of merch was sold, a lot of stuff from their vault was put on display and they'd play an acoustic set. Conventions had been going on for years in multiple cities and we're very successful so they figured they'd do an "official" one and make money themselves. It was very successful. Peter Criss, after not talking to Gene and Paul for over a decade, took his kid to one of them just to show how it used to be and he was a big deal at one time. He ended up on stage to sing Beth and the crowd went nuts. MTV Unplugged was pretty big at the time and they approached Gene and Paul about recording the acoustic show at the LA KISS Konvention but with Ace and Peter. They even released it on home video. That's what this song is from. Ace and Peter played a few songs with all 4 of the other guys and that's what lead to the reunion and putting the makeup back on and once again pulled KISS off of life support.
That's Eric Singer on Drums,he took over when Eric Carr died. That's Bruce Kulick on the Lead Guitar. He was there for Years. On this Unplugged performance,Peter & Ace came out & played a few songs. Ace sang 2000 Man & Peter sang Nothin' To Lose. U should check Both of those out. Great Jams.
@brwie When Paul Stanley still had his voice. He was the best front man in rock. I think he lost It I want to say mid 2000's. Because he from RUclips videos I've seen was doing a tour with kiss. And also another tour at the same time and his voice was lost.... he still has an amazing personality for interviews, and I could listen to him tell stories of the rock and roll his guitars anything. Truth be told, if he had not lost his voice. Kiss would still be touring. No doubt in my mind about that.
You should watch the whole show. Eric Singer/drums,Bruce Kulick/ lead guitar. Later original drummer,PeterCriss& lead guitarist Ace join this show. Eventually leading to the reunion tour.

Thank you for exploring the non KISS radio hits (they did try hard for this one to be a hit though). If you want to reach long, try something from the album "(Music from) the Elder". "The Oath", "Just a Boy", or "Dark Light". This is considered widely as their worst album. I consider it one of the best. Certainly better than "Anamalize", "Asylum", "Crazy Nights" and "Hot in the Shade" era. "Unmasked" was also deemed a non starter. Loved it.
PASSION. ThunderRockers K I S S showed emotions deeper than the Mariana Trench, and a lust for sincerity. Every man can relate to the honesty of this song, and the authenticity of this performance. 🤟
If you want to see a early KISS, that in my mind, was one of the first original metal songs in my opinion: Parasite from Cobo Hall in 1976. If you need the clip, contact me! I got everything from KISS from every era.
What a great video. God gave rock and roll to you is a great KISS anthem wroth a listen. it was the last performance Eric carr did with KISS before he passed couple weeks later
A lot of people have always crapped on the band's songwriting and abilities to play. But they weren't ever nearly as bad as people who didn't like them, claimed that they were.

This is Paul Stanley at his peak vocally. If you would have seen them live in the last 10 years, Paul's Voice is just a shadow of this. But it happen to MOST singers as they age, there are exceptions to the rule, but Paul surely did.
Robbin Ford played the solo on the studio version! The great blues player
KISS were more of a band without the makeup but that doesn't mean Im saying they weren't a band in makeup either . They are talented all round as musicians and as performers .
Paul is an incredible singer 🙏
I remember something that really blew my mind concerning Paul Stanley and how pro he is. A show in Australia I think, around 1982, he played the hit song "Shandi" only him on guitar and it was so freaking good. I think that had an issue with equipment, and he filled in while the issue was corrected. I highy recommand, the video is on you tube.
As a drummer you should love their album "Revenge"
The original is from the Creatures of the Night album. That album gets overlooked but there are some fantastic songs on that album, My favorite being Saint and Sinner.
I also love the original version of this song from the Creatures album.
Paul singing,Eric Singer on drums and I think Bruce Kulick
Ace Frehley has said, and I agree, that its harder to play lead on an acoustic guitar vs an electric. I have to tip my hat to him and to Bruce Kulick on this session because they both stayed faithful to the old solos originally played on electric guitars.
I'm not sure what other Kiss stuff to recommend. Revenge was a great album, heavier than the 70s and early 80s stuff. After that was Carnival Of Souls, which went in an even darker direction than Revenge.
Other non Kiss songs:
Aerosmith: Woman Of The World
Thin Lizzy: Cowboy Song
Megadeth: The Doctor Is Calling
ZZ Top: Waiting For The Bus
Jimi Hendrix: Drifting
Grand Funk Railroad: Bad Time
Misfits: Don't Open Till Doomsday
I know I might get a lot of shit for this, but Lana Del Rey's "Ride" is a great song.
Yeah, so many different types of instruments out there! This vocal performance was insane for sure! So good!
Unplugged is great, really showcases some great songs without all the pyro
Loved your reaction 😍❤️.
Really appreciate it! 😄
KISS at their prime. Yes, the original lineup was the best but this is something else and what they should have went back to in 2001.
Eric Singer is the drummer, he wears Peter Criss make up now. Haven’t checked, but he may be kiss longest tenured drummer
Eric Singer on drums, stayed with with Kiss till the end. He put on Peter's Catman make up.
Great Jams.
It was singing songs like this one...and hitting and holding notes...is why Paul's voice was shot by the time he became a senior citizen.
That is very true.
He lasted a damn long time overall, we were just spoiled by his longevity.
This is a beautiful song by Paul Stanley. He is my man lol
Epic!🙏⭐️👊
Check out Eric Carr drum solo from crazy nights live in Japan/song is War Machine . Also Cozy Powell w/ Rainbow drum solo 1977 Someone here has it posted as best drum solo ever. Love your channel! Also recommend Queen I'm in love with my car and Somebody to love from rocks Montreal! Roger Taylor was a wonderful player and singer!
Gene played really good bad guy/terrorist in several movies and TV shows.
Really?! I didn’t know he was an actor too! He has his hands in everything! Thanks for sharing!
Loved it.
paul stanley - gene simmons - bruce kulick - eric singer
Kiss, Nirvana and Alice In Chains are the best MTV Unplugged episodes
What a great video. God gave rock and roll to you is a great KISS anthem wroth a listen. it was the last performance Eric carr did with KISS before he passed couple weeks later
A lot of people have always crapped on the band's songwriting and abilities to play.
But they weren't ever nearly as bad as people who didn't like them, claimed that they were.
Exactly, bands don't have a career like KISS had without the music being good, if not great.
