  • Indian proudly carries the title of America’s first motorcycle company with a 121-year long history. However, it is the last decade that truly reflects Indian’s recent rise to prominence, which is definitely attributed to the influx of funds from Polaris. Today, we will cover the latest models, that will come out of the Spirit Lake, Iowa factory and custom workshops in 2022. These include the industry’s most luxurious cruisers, tourers and street bikes.

    I owned 2 Victory bikes when Polaris announced shutting that brand down to focus on Indian. What had attracted me to Victory was they took the appeal of American big V-twin and cranked it up with more power, better styling (to me) and some models offering features Harley would have charged double or triple price for- I was looking to buy a new Harley until I saw the Victory Jackpot with fat 250mm rear tire, taller skinny front tire, good looking wheels, attractive engine details, etc. None of my 3 current bikes are Polaris. And although I just looked at these 2022 Indian models, seems to me they are just imitating Harley. Meh…

    I work for Polaris and often do work for Indian. I can tell you this. Polaris' corporate culture is amazing. I have never experienced an emphasis on ethics, quality and sheer fun with any other company I have worked for. A substantial chunk of the company is employee-owned and they pay well. You are encouraged to go out and ride and have fun all the time. Polaris has had mixed issues in the past, but the current obsession with excellence is refreshing. And its dedication to Made-in-USA quality is rare these days.

      Been riding Harleys for over 44 of my 60yrs and my Old Man rode 'em before he had me. 2 of my Harleys are older than I am, and run better than I do!
      Not that I ever needed their service dept since I do all my own work on my bikes, and replaced the Magnetti-Spaghetti FI on my youngest, a '97 FLHPi. They have announced they will no longer service non-current models. Good! More work for me! I also work on others bikes on the side, and can get better quality parts from the aftermarket, often cheaper and usually faster than the remaining HD stealerships in my area.

    While I do like some of the Indian models, I'm
    not too keen on the use of aluminum frames.
    If in a fender bender, or a minor crash, aluminum frames are very difficult to straighten n weld, which requires specialized equipment, plus may develope stress cracks over the years. I prefer steel frames...

    • @tedmarakas2626
      @tedmarakas2626 2 года назад +3

      Replacement is the way to go. It will cost a few $$$$ because of the labor switching everything over and stamping the VIN Numbers but it could be worse....like a total loss. Aluminum frames have low weight, rigidity and fairly easy to produce. In the name of high performance at a reasonable price they're very hard to beat.

      If fairly easy to produce,
      then, why so expensive??

      not justified...

    • @tedmarakas2626
      @tedmarakas2626 2 года назад

      @@Pork-Chopper If you don't mind asking, how expensive do you think aluminum frames are? By the way, re-stamping, shipping and administrative costs is the largest part of the expense. Having said that, any kind of frame regardless of the material used will still have the same expenses. Take a look at carbon fiber. The material is dirt cheap. Production is also inexpensive, certainly less expensive than aluminum. Yet, it costs an arm and a leg to purchase an OEM finished product. Could it be marketing? Do the manufacturers offer it as "exotic" material? I believe that there are ridiculous administrative fees attached to the purchase of a legal frame, just like you mentioned that frames are made of crushed beer cans. Well, that's my take on it, maybe someone who actually knows can chime in. By the way, I have a Moto Guzzi V9 with a steel frame. Try buying parts or a frame as a whole. It is very expensive. Steel is far cheaper material than aluminum and far easier to work with.
      Cheers.

      First, these companies are in the business of
      turning a profit for the shareholders. Second, like automobiles, once you drive off the lot with a new bike, it has depreciated $5000 off the top. Third, most motorcycle companies stop producing service parts after five years of a model year, that's why it's difficult to find aftermarket parts for bikes older than 5 years old. Except for Harley-Davidson, which has a large following of aftermarket companies producing tons of aftermarket parts, S&S, Fueling, Revtech, Jim's, Performance Machine,
      Roland Sands, Arlen Mess, Barnett, etc. Also, you won't find a Dealership in every city to service your bike, plus no one wants to pay Dealership rates, and aftermarket shops often leave alot to be desired. One silver lining is the internet. If you look hard enough, you will find parts for your bike, but most want Dealership service from your mom n pop shop. It's not gonna happen. It takes alot of money to carry inventory, plus, there are many companies selling product online, yet most bikers want a shop that will offer "full service". That will be a Dealership. I encourage most motorcyclist's to learn to do their own basic maintenance to save money. For instance, remove your own wheels to have new tires installed, you save considerable money doing that yourself. It's not hard to do, yet, most don't want to do it, much less check their tire pressures like they are supposed to. Most run 20psi or 50psi or more, and many do not read their Owners Manual. So, you reap what you sow. If you wanna play like the big boys, ya gotta pay like the big boys. Or learn to service n maintain your own bike. IMO, that's the way it should be, not being dependent on shops where you are at their mercy. Caveat Emptor. Many Hot Rodders do their own work. How do you think the Custom scene was born?

    • @tedmarakas2626
      @tedmarakas2626 2 года назад

      @@Pork-Chopper You're 100% on all the points. I own 6 motorcycles, if I was to give them to the dealership for maintenance I'd need a truck to deliver them and another truck full of cash. I have a full shop at home and order my parts from all over the world, except China because they're on my shit list, however, there a few things such as electronics coding, and anything that requires factory support. In the past, before I set up my own shop, I used to go to moms and pop stores because I like to support them but they were very limited to what they could do. Sometimes I found that paying dealer prices was worth it to keep my bikes on the road. It is true that dealership prices are very high because their operating costs are astronomical and cutting corners on parts could cause loss of their franchise. I live in NYC, everything is expensive and a hassle around here. Italian bikes are high maintenance but they are far more reliable than they used to be. In fact, nowadays, they are very good. As far as play hard and pay a lot goes.....nobody in their right mind can deny it. Oh, yes...the owners manual....nobody reads the damn thing but .....I do. I used to be a tech for Mercedes Benz. It's unbelievable how few people spend $100k on a car and know absolutely nothing about it or how to take care of it. Same applies to motorcycles, even more so, I'd say.
      Cheers, ride carefully.

    The Indians are sharp looking, nice bikes, but two things would keep me thinking twice about buying one. First is fit and finish isn't that good, it looks nice until you park it right next to a HD, and start noticing the gaps and how nice the HD parts fit from big to the smallest parts just fit better. The second is lack of aftermarket parts. Most people want their bike to be their own, HD has so many after market parts, the same exact bikes look completely different from each other. But the hp on the Indian is really impressive

    My only beef is when you are coaxed into saying , the oldest motorcycle company. The only thing you have is the name. Bought and sold through the years. Polaris Victory immediately went into death spiral by hiring Arlen Ness to help with design and styling. Bad transmissions didn't help either. The new Indian named motorcycle company makes nice machine's . A lot of thought and engineering and Polaris manufacturing expertise coming together.

    • @Oldbmwr100rs
      @Oldbmwr100rs 2 года назад +1

      Working with Ness actually did a lot for Victory, it gave them a unique look during a time when factory customs were a big thing. Look at the original models and decide. I work on them and haven't heard of too many transmission issues, really no more than other bikes. Clutch adjustment seems to be very sensitive though. Victory's problem was simply getting traction in a market already flooded with cruisers on top of being sold by polaris dealers who were far fewer and farther between than other brands. Buying Indian really saved both polaris' motorcycle ambitions as well as finally giving real credit to the very abused Indian brand. And to be honest, I'm really liking how well made the Indian's are, they're very solid and the engines need no excuses made for their power delivery. The Challenger BTW is based on the newest Victory design that was stopped when the company decided to put everything into rebuilding the indian brand.

      @@JC-oc7um Just like harley, right? Much of a harley is now chinese parts, too. I bet if it said made in usa with chinese parts people wouldn't be too happy. At least in Indian's case polaris is actually trying to do the name some long awaited justice with actually building a pretty decent bike that's not just some harley kit bike.

    You didn't even cover two of the main models in Indian's lineup: the Scout and the Springfield! The traditional 'Scout' (not Bobber, not 60, not 20) is a direct-competitor to the Harley Low Rider and Street Glides...for less than 2/3rds the cost (with more power)! Also, since Polaris is the parent-company to Indian...the 'MSRP' (manufacturer's suggested retail price) is generally what you'll actually find the bike for in a dealership...where with Harley, constant production 'shortages' means that Low Rider S (comparable to a Scout) priced at $18,900 MSRP will actually cost you $35,000 or more, to leave the dealership with it! You can ALWAYS tell if you want to 'shop for a Harley' by simply looking at their 'on-floor' stock...one-or-two bikes, and you can DOUBLE their MSRP for the bike you want...if they have stock sitting in the parking lot, packed in the showroom, then yeah, you MIGHT get close to getting it for MSRP! Indian, not so...much-more-simple 'Japanese Bike Pricing' with larger dealers!

    The trouble with these all black bikes is that they look great in the shop when new but look like they've been sprayed with a matt black rattle can up a back alley somewhere after a couple of years use....The manufacturers love it though...No expensive polishing or plating to get involved in...
