Ferruccio Busoni - Fantasia Contrappuntistica, BV 256 (John Ogdon)

- Fantasia contrappuntistica (BV 256) is a solo piano piece composed by Ferruccio Busoni in 1910. Busoni created a number of versions of the work, including several for solo piano and one for two pianos. It has been arranged for organ (by Wilhelm Middelschulte, dedicatee of the work, whom Busoni praised as "Meister des Kontrapunktes") and for orchestra (by Frederick Stock) under the composer's supervision.
The work is in large part a homage to Johann Sebastian Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge. Conversely, Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji's Opus clavicembalisticum appears to be a homage to Fantasia contrappuntistica.

NOTE : Ogdon plays the passage at 26:36 for two times. At first, he plays the second version at 26:36 and then the first. Because of this, the score you see on the screen is not connected with the notes he plays for few bars. Sorry about this.
It's the second version first...
Ogdon plays the NB part first, then back to the original version.
Marvellous! Only a pianist as obes as the unanimously well respected JOHN OGDEN (famous for recordings of pieces such as Busoni's PIANO CONCERTO and Kaikhorsu Sorbaji's OPUS CALVINISTICUM) could do justice to a piece as gorgeous and gigantic as this. I am in awe!
Kind regards
Yeah.

The stretta was just 🔥🔥🔥
And how does he even pull off those octave jumps?
The most ferocious recording of this masterwork. Fuga III is one of the greatest fugues ever written.
What about Petri? I think I prefer his recording to Ogdon.
@@imdarealani Petri is the best in this piece.
@@ladivinafanatic I agree.
What utter st*pidity and lack of underdtanding of music, letalone fugues, that fugue is absolutely misurable, so utterly terribly composed.
but then. what is THE greatest fugue?

Ogdon added a few measures in the coda. Herberman also did the same thing. Where is the phrase derived from? Sounds like the coda of the two-piano version.
It's actually from the two pf version ending
EPIC

Now I can know from whom Sorabji got influenced
Sorabji was influenced by a wide range of composers, from Bach to Scriabin
This is the inspiration for Opus Clavicembalisticum, particularly.
Busoni is to Sorabji as Brahms is to Reger
Trash inspires more trash, not cleanup.
there is also a strong Debussy influence on Sorabji
Epic
Hi Yagiz! I started following your channel since you uploaded Scriabins prelude op 11 no 1, and I wondered if you could upload a self composed piece?
Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I am really glad to see some old followers, I can upload one of my compositions for sure!
@@yagiz885 Nice! And btw! Is it okay for you if you upload one of my sets of preludes? (9 pieces to be exact) I’ve been composing them for a long time!
Thanks!

Where is the channel that had the whole piano sonata no 1 of medtner in synthesia? I can't find it
Well for some reason Pachabel Synthesia's Channel is gone, I am trying to contact him
@@yagiz885 Oh noo that's so sad. Tell me if there's news
@@yagiz885Maybe u can do a re-upload of the sonata?
Ogdon puts in the ending from the two-piano version (a couple extra chords), and to be honest, I'm not a fan. It's a bit much.
I disagree, it sounds like the epic ending this piece deserves.
@@segmentsAndCurves I feel like it was plenty epic already, and somehow this one feels pretty trite to me now.

Fazıl Say'ın istanbul senfonisinin her hangi bir bölümünü synthesizer'dan yapabilir misin ? Bence gayet iyi olur. Ulvi Ceemal'in halk oyun ezgilerini orkestrasyonladığı çalışmalar hariç bence cumhuriyet dönemi Türk besteciliğinin en önemli eseri istanbul senfonisidir.

why is that?
@@yagiz885 it has no form, it's just endless noise. Nothing holding it together, no direction nor purpose.
You need to be familiar with Bach's Art of Fugue to make any sense of it. However I grant you the writing is dense.
@@petereden9224 I am fully familiar with that. However, nothing related to the art of fugue could justify this garbage. And I am confused as to why you think it would.
