Spectre feels like a Big Mac on a thousand dollar plate. Everything looks pretty but there's no sense that Bond is ever in danger, Waltz is underwhelming, and there's no chemistry between Bond and Swann. It's Skyfall by a country mile.
Agreed, there was 10x more chemistry between Bond and Lucia. The Rome segment as a whole is where the film performs strongest for me but I do also find the Mr White and Volcano arrival (before we meet Waltz) scenes pretty engaging in their tension and intrigue, before the Waltz scenes begin to rapidly suck the life out of the film.
I agree Skyfall is much better than Spectre, but I really thought Bond and Swann were really good together. I liked their chemistry. Of course I liked Moneypenny;s and Bond's chemistry, too, in Skyfall.
Feeling a bit down these days, so it's nice to see another video from you. I always enjoy these back and forths, hearing people's perspectives on Bond.
Skyfall no question. Beautiful, thoughtful and fun. Spectre was boring, shallow and rushed. They could have waited to use the Spectre title but as soon as they had it they blew their wad. With Mathis it was pretty clear that we was setup by Vesper.
Don't forget Skyfall's cinematographer Sir Roger Alexander Deakins. He is the recipient of five BAFTA Awards for Best Cinematography, and two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography from sixteen nominations. At the 85th Academy Awards, Skyfall received nominations for Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Original Score (Thomas Montgomery Newman), and Best Sound Mixing; and won Best Original Song (Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. The first Bond theme to be so honored) and Best Sound Editing.
The moment Bond was strapped to the chair with the drill in Spectre, was when the film went down hill for me. They could have made the Volcano lair so much more fleshed out, especially if the severely battle damaged Henchman, Dave Bautista was back for an epic show down, have a scene where he rescues Swan, Final boss fight with Blofeld (all at the same time M is having his ding dong with C in London), it could have been epic.
Isn't even a question. Spectre is one of the most tonally off Bond films and it feels like a fanfic. It's also only "classic Bond" at face value. It's stereotypical Bond doing stereotypical Bond things rather than being a real character. NTTD pulled off classic Bond better than Spectre, where the character came before the classic tropes. Oh yeah and the concept of Brofeld makes me wince to this day. Not only an awful idea but it also retroactively makes Casino Royale and Skyfall worse if you consider it's canon. Skyfall lacks subtlety in delivering it's themes but the good is so good that the film is still a joy.
I like the idea of ending Spectre with the lair blowing up. With the time saved removing the London stuff you could lengthen the lair's demolition (and do something a little more realistic with its demise) and also add a scene or two to build up the chemistry between Madeleine and Bond.
I thought Dave Bautista was Fantastic as Hinx in Spectre- he IMO really brought out a nemesis that Bond never knew would turn up, but Alas Skyfall (IMO) was just a better made movie.
Gentlemen, you're underrating yourselves in assuming that Tarantino wouldn't come on your channel. By nature of his ebullient nature, his appreciation of Bond, and the quality of your platform I can almost guarantee that he'd be there with bells on if invited.
Spectre hurts the three previous films by diminishing their plots and implying that it was all the doing of the underwhelming Blofeld. It also hurts nttd by leaving loose ends and forcing it to make the bond-swan romance believable. For that reason it is my least favorite of the Craig films.
It was interesting reading Sam Mendes comments on Skyfall's 10th anniversary as he was involved in scripting both films uncredited but while he felt they worked through the issues with Skyfall's script, Spectre's carried through due to lack of time [the C character being the obvious traitor came after M and Tanner were rejected for example]. Production was also very troubled [Bautista said Daniel Craig was very stressed during production while in contrast he found him to be very relaxed when they reunited on 'Glass Onion] and the Sony Hack shows the 3rd act had to be re-worked during filming [to the extent they had to use the Bridge at the end because the set was already built and Madeline strolls off to be kidnapped because they took out a new version of Irma Bunt she was meant to fight at that point]. As well as subsequently working with Bautista, Andrew Scott is a part of the upcoming Knives out 3 so Craig clearly made good relationships on set despite the other issues.
I've always wondered if Monica Bellucci's cameo in Spectre was a late addition to get a second main Bond girl in as she only interacts with Craig in her scene, her character is not mentioned elsewhere and the pacing suffers for it's inclusion. While Ana De Armas was thrown in late for NTTD [and her character is also not mentioned elsewhere] at least her appearance is in an action sequence so it fits better [and ended up being one of the most memorable bits for many viewers].
I'm going to have a few Quintino's tomorrow night at happy hour! Shaken not stirred... this was a great video because I totally enjoy both films. The observations right down to CRAIGS hair length in QOS are the best of BOND analysis. Cheers men.
The problem with Spectre is that Quantum was supposed to be the “hidden organization”. “We have people everywhere” and the MI6 agent turning guns is so great. Spectre comes in and says “well, akshually, it’s Spectre that is everywhere” which seems lame and not interesting. They needed to have Oberhausen be a part of Quantum that spun off on his own after Green died. Rebuilding of the secret society, not trying to one-up it. NTtD has the same problem. Super secret and powerful organization taken out completely by a new guy to up the stakes. It’s not interesting.
What I love about Skyfall is the Cinerama when the camara looking from a distance from Skyfall, the fog, mysterious place, a story line untold about James Bond and the part when James Bond was looking on top of the building, overlooking the city of London, it's my favorite of James Bond movies!!!
I'm in the Spectre camp. I get the criticism, I love Skyfall and recognize it's a better movie than Spectre, but I just have more fun with Spectre and it's prettier to look at :) admittedly, I also stop watching when they return to London for the final act, so maybe that helps
I love all the Daniel Craig movies, Casino Royale, first of all!! Between these two, although i love the Austrian snow scenes from Spectre, i prefere Skyfall.
The only flaws about skyfall is after the four year gap after quantum they can off forgotten that craig bond was still continuing his journey as a younger 00 but i guess they forgot about it,but if daniel got a bond movie movie in 2010 and then time gap forward after that into skyfall it will have made more sense as him being a middle age 007.
The idea that Spectre should put the train fight AFTER the base explosion and bin off the whole "Scooby Gang" final act holds water but that doesn't save the mess that is the rest of the film . .
Skyfall for me is the best Craig Bond with so many different story lines and the suits he wore coming back from the dead made it for me. Spectre after the first watch was my least favorite aside from No Time Die's ending. However, after watching Spectre several more times I find myself loving it more and more.
I love Skyfall. It has great visuals, some great scenes. Some really cool moments. The ending was the weakest part though and some of the plot didn't join up very well. Spectre was less memorable for me, but I need to watch it again hearing Tarantino's views on it. He also controversially said Temple of Doom was his favourite IJ movie.
Skyfall lost me with the London Underground scenes. Silva was former MI6, but somehow elevated to billionaire villian status. In Spectre, I agree Blofeld was much too weak a villainous character.
I get the question in my opinion, though both are lacking something… and it’s odd that I find what was lacking in no time to die which I think is Craig’s second best film, followed by Skyfall then Spectre
Skyfall is a better film, but Spectre is a better Bind film that tries to recapture some of the traditional tropes. It sadly didn’t make the most of it, yet it feels more like Bond than Skyfall.
I still say, they could bring back, James Bond by the end of No Time To Die, when Bond got Killed, years later James Bond had a son he didn't know about only M knew that had been training for MI6, I think that would be a great storyline!!!
Here’s what I see from Tarantino’s viewpoint, Spectre is indeed, speaking in tropes and feel, MORE like a Bond movie. Skyfall feels like a genuinely good spy thriller, not just a Bond movie. But between the two, Spectre has the ingredients of a classic Bond tale. Make no mistake, there’s a part of me that HATES Spectre. But Skyfall is also quite silly in its own way, and Casino Royale feels infinitely more like a classic Bond film than Skyfall. So which film is objectively better? Skyfall, no contest, no debate, Skyfall is perfect in comparison. Which one has the classic Bond tropes more in line? Spectre.
Spectre positives: Craig's performance. Daniel Craig looks like he's having fun and he's got a lot of "Bond" swagger. It is a good story with great action (except the car chase), Mr Hinx, a great henchman. Great clothes, I love all of Bond's outfits. Negatives; Bro-feld (cringe), the car chase 😴, the ending was clunky. If you just got rid of the Bro-feld plot point and re-edited the car chase, it would rase the level of the film 10 points!
Spectre might have the classic Bond 'hardware' in terms of tropes and check box elements but lacks decent 'software' for me, acting, writing and story.
Put me down for Spectre. Feels more like a Bond movie and had better set pieces. I always felt that the weird cgi on Silva was off-putting in more ways than one.
Skyfall is the only Bond movie that drops a few rankings after every rewatch. Not going to defend Spectre either, other than to say I left the theatre with a smile on my face, which definitely didn't happen with any of the Craig films aside from Casino Royale. Skyfall has so many massive plot holes. Bond is too old and cranky, epecially considering it's only the third movie in the Craig era. And the most annoying thing about Skyfall is M. She is so petulant and defensive, even saying "See if I care" like a 12 year old, when Bond threatens to eject her from the Astin after all her insufferable complaining. Killing her off was the best part of Skyfall. And she's pretentious af, reading poetry in a Bond movie intercut with an action sequence, which ruins both the gravitas of the poem and the excitement of the action sequence. Rediculous. Spectre has its problems, but Skyfall is a mess in lipstick.
Spectre first half until the car chase ends in Rome was a very good movie. The latter part of the plot felt like they had not finished the script. Also the evil lair in Morocco was somehow lackluster. It would have been better to be under the sea on the shores of Morocco instead of the ever boring flat dessert
I keep going back to Spectre, hoping some alternate universe has corrected all the flaws and it becomes the great (or better) movie it could have been. But it is always the same. There are so many cool scenes in Spectre- why couldn't that inspired direction carry through the whole film?.... Touch it!...
The problem with Skyfall -- despite all of it's qualities as a movie -- is that it's warmed over The World Is Not Enough and frankly, Elektra King is an interesting character in a way Silva just isn't (the plot holes of Skyfall also personally annoy me). Spectre is like Moonraker; an eminently flawed, eminently silly, eminently dumb, again frankly, retread of its predecessor. Lewis Gilbert tried to make Bond an opera 3 times, and while The Spy Who Loved Me was an improvement on the You Only Live Twice formula, Moonraker, for all its faults is when he hit that operatic note. It has its issues, but there's an accomplished vision there. And Spectre? Well, Waltz' Bloefeld is THE divisive part of Spectre, but this version of Bloefeld IS Silva in Skyfall. The whole plot engine of Skyfall is Silva's obsessions, both the petty and the justified, of M's crimes against him, her neglect of him. That's Bloefeld in reverse in Spectre with Bond. He's pettier, sure, but I think he's also a more consistently written character. Skyfall is certainly a superior film by almost any metric you care to use, but the one thing I'll give Spectre is that it's a more INTERESTING film. That may be part of what makes it a bit worse as a Bond film, mind you. It's a little too self-consciously Movie with a capital M, trending towards Bond as ArtHouse (Laughs in No Time To Die). But Spectre, to me, feels like one in a very short lineage of Bond films that is about something, or that at least attempts to be. Skyfall feels like it thinks it wants to be about something, but unravels at the light examination
I prefer Spectre, although, not much of a fan of it. Skyfall for me is too lifeless and meta for my liking. At least Spectre has a bit more colour to it. Not much of a fan of Sam Mendes Bond contributions, and after reading his favourite Bond movie is 'Live and Let Die' I can see the bar is low lol Chris Nolan is a big fan of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' now that's someone I feel confident in when handling a Bond movie. But, yes, Skyfall I find very over-rated and is actually one of my least liked.
Skyfall is a rare sirloin steak with fluffy, golden fries and soft, succulent sweetcorn. Spectre follows on from Skyfall, coming shortly after the steak but in the form of a steaming pile of excrement, formed from what you so recently enjoyed but with all the goodness extracted. All the nuances and complexities are gone. What was so meticulously prepared and polished has been succeeded by a heavily processed motion that has very little thought or skill put into it. You still see that sweetcorn but it's literally covered in ****.
I agree 100% with Tarantino. I never liked Skyfall. It feels like there is no real mission, no real investigation. The movie is obsessed in giving a modern era feel. The best example is the Q scene. Spectre is over the top and sure has its flaws, but I love that feels like a real Bond
To me Skyfall is an S-tier movie that just happens to have bond in it, but it's just not a 'bond film' to me. Spectre is kinda the opposite, feels like a great classic bond film...having said that there are a few big flaws that bring it down. Basically I enjoy all of it right up until the are in the meteorite room in blofelds lair, from that point on it just falls off the rails. If they had dropped the bro-feld angle and just went with a legitimate scary bad guy (like you see in the rome meeting) I think a lot more people would rate it quite a bit higher.
This isn’t even debatable 😂…..Skyfall is leagues better than Spectre in almost every conceivable way…. 1) Cinematography 2) Story 3)Villain 4) Judy Dench is Fantastic in this film 5) No crappy love story that isn’t believable 6) Spectacular action 7) Better locations 8) Daniel Craig at his Peak as Bond…. Need We go on 😂
Skyfall has the best cinematography since Majesty's and Spy Who Loved Me (Deakins' work in the Macau and Shanghai sequences alone), the best Bond girl who on top of being both mysterious and complex actually has chemistry with Bond (also Moneypenny, that shaving scene is very fun and playful), a top 3 Bond theme, a fantastic unhinged villain worthy of going head to head with Bond and great action in the opening and finale. Spectre definitely has some good moments like the opening sequence, the creepy iilluminati-style meeting in Rome, the Tangier segment still has me engaged, one of the best Bond girls in Lucia (that seduction scene is electric), Bond's strong fashion choices and arguably the best hand to hand fight in the entire franchise where Bond is the underdog Rocky to Hinx's Ivan Drago. The biggest disappointments for me were the drab color palette which prevented Van Hoytema's cinematography from having much impact at all (would love someone to do a recolor), a masterclass in how to make a car chase boring (although the beautifully filmed drift when Bond passes the Vatican is appreciated) and the weak villain combined with the unthrilling finale.
They're not as different as most people think. I despise how Spectre makes everything family matter, but I also despise the way Skyfall keeps talking about whether old dog can do new tricks. I've never doubted anyone can move forward into something new and lively, so it feels like a tired trick question. I despise them both for moving Bond back into the old Bond mold which is the greatest disservice to Craig, he who starred in Layer Cake really needed these 2 films to be more like QoS.
Bond makes the most stupid error in SPECTRE. He shoots that suitcase bomb and blows up half a bloody block. He had no way of knowing that there would no civilians left in those buildings and that they would al be at the Day of the Dead celebration. For me this error was unforgivable and made Bond worse than a rookie agent and certainly he would have been fired and maybe even charged for going out on his own and creating an international incident.
Spectre easily the best for me. Whilst of course really enjoyed Skyfall it felt short changed on the glamour and sense of magnificent destinations that returned again with the later movie. For me that is an integral part of what makes the franchise what it is. Skyfall had intriguing locations such as the Hashina Island but for me as a Bond movie overall it fell short.
Tarantino was right and he was also right about Casino Royale with Pierce. Spectre is a proper bond movie and embraces all those Bond tropes. Is it better than Skyfall? No. Of course not. But it’s not worse either. Two completely different films and intentions. You can’t really compare.
Spectre does feel like a more traditional Bond movie from the 60's through the 80's or even the last three Brosnan movies. However, it also feels like a step back. Movies change with the times and the first three Craig movies felt fresh and moving forward into the 21st century. Spectre goes back to being a more traditional Bond movie but at that point it is too late to go back. It felt instantly old and out of touch. It felt like a self parody. They made Blofeld his brother, which was straight out of Austin Powers. It just really missed the mark for me on every level. Not to count the MCU effect of it trying to suddenly link the last three movies together.
After I finish Skyfall, I am energized and ready to go. After I finish Spectre, I am EXHAUSTED and feel like I ran a marathon. There is just TOO MUCH MOVIE inside Spectre, its just too massive on every level
I can see Quentino's point. In Spectre, Bond wins, gets the bad guy, gets the girl, ends in victory. Were in Skyfall if you think about it fails thoughtout the movie. Fails in the opening mission. Gets Silva, but was a trap. Gets Silva in the end, but fails the main objective of saving M. So on paper I can see what he means. But having said that Skyfall is far superior in everyway it's not even close imo. Spectre is the most boring out of all the Craig era films. And for a film being boring might be the biggest sin of all. Again just my opinion though. If you love Spectre more power to you.
Second half of Skyfall is High Noon at the OK Coral and a complete mess, but Spectre is an unmitigated disaster from start to finish. Craig films were the absolute worst of the entire series. Good riddance.
@@pd1323 What makes my subjective opinion wrong? Why don't you tell me why I'm wrong rather than just assert it. What is it you see interesting, entertaining or even laudable about these wretched films?
@@sandersson2813 I think the atmosphere and emotional heft of the Craig series outdoes anything prior. Before then it was a formulaic repetitive mill of the same old. Fine the plot of Craig era is dodgy but tonally its far better than anything else bar Goldeneye.
@@pd1323 Emotional tone? Craig is a charmless, humourless, miserable emo who has been sent to his bedroom. There was no emotion. He invokes absolutely no like for his character as he has no personality or charm. He also looks like a jug eared Slavic potato and would be far more suitably cast as a henchman. Clive Owen at the time would have been a far better Bond, but the scripts, plots and lack of ideas would still be present and still be as bad. Bond simply got overtaken by the likes of Bourne, which was far better than Craig's woeful attempt at Bond.
@@pd1323 Emotional heft? Ha ha ha, if I want that I'll depress myself with a Ken Loach film. Craig has NO emotion, he's a charmless, humourless, personality vacuum who you simply don't care about. He's also more like a henchman in looks with his 5 foot nothing frame and FA Cup ears.
I actually enjoy Spectre more than Skyfall, even when Skyfall is a better movie. I can go in for 10 minutes of Spectre, but I gotta sit down for the whole movie of Skyfall
It's no contest, Skyfall is the better movie. I think of all the Bond movies made after Dr. No, Spectre is the one that failed to meet expectations the most. It had the potential to be the best Bond movie ever mainly because it was the same team that made Skyfall including Sam Mendes. But it's just not that good of a movie and the retconning that not only did Blofeld orchestrate the events of the first three Craig movies but that he and Bond were fosters brothers is one of the dumbest things in all 25 movies. Plus Skyfall is just so much more fun that Spectre.
I prefer Spectre as a movie, I just think it's the more enjoyable Bond film. Skyfall is so dour and joyless, and not that satisfying in terms of action. And that's not a huge endorsement of Spectre either - it's deeply problematic and flawed, but it was the last gasp of the Craig era.
Spectre is an amazing travelogue of wealth porn with a million well placed Easter eggs for hard core Bond fans suspended by an absolutely ludicrous plot void of tension or reason.
I'm afraid they are both bad. SPECTRE is dull, unimaginative, bland, and commits the eternal sin of making Bond Blofeld's adopted brother. After 9 years that statement gets no less ridiculous. Skyfall has its moments, but the plot holes are Grand Canyon-sized. Casino Royale is the only good Daniel Craig film and the series has been ruined because of his tenure.
I need to rewatch them again.. but as of now, spectre is the worst for me. Awful sepia tone for mexico, underused Monica Belucci, terrible script for blofeld. Bad pacing in the 3rd act.
Spectre feels like a Big Mac on a thousand dollar plate. Everything looks pretty but there's no sense that Bond is ever in danger, Waltz is underwhelming, and there's no chemistry between Bond and Swann. It's Skyfall by a country mile.
Waltz is incredibly overrated as an actor. Even less menacing than Jonathan Price in Tomorrow Never Dies.
Well said. I’ve said Craig and Seydoux have no chemistry since the beginning. She is the worst choice for “continuing Bond girl” out there.
I agree Skyfall is much better than Spectre, but I really thought Bond and Swann were really good together. I liked their chemistry. Of course I liked Moneypenny;s and Bond's chemistry, too, in Skyfall.
That’s a really good analogy. I couldn’t have said it better. I didn’t hate it. It’s just mid.
One of the most coolest scenes in a Bond movie is the "Tennyson" scene in "Skyfall". Absolutely love it!! The score is also epic.

Not to mention the fact that Adele‘s theme song is one of the best ever in the franchise, and the theme song from Spectre is pure torture.
This.
The best is still Duran Duran but yes Adele's song is better than Sam's
@@fmor4133I wholeheartedly agree!
The spectre theme song sounds like someone’s weiner getting stuck in the slowest meat grinder.

Thunderball, OHMSS then YOLT would have been a trilogy. That was the original order til things got shuffled.
First! Love your content btw!
Interesting what Tarantino said. Who interviewed him?
Love both, but gotta go with Skyfall. My favorite Craig installment 👌
Still can't over the fact that Bond kidnapped M and got her killed
Skyfall…hands down. The screenplay for Spectre was dreadful. Christolph Waltz should have been the best Blofeld ever, but was criminally wasted.
I get that the end sequence is unrealistic in Spectre, but why does the London Underground scene in Skyfall get a pass?
Because it’s at least entertaining and plays into the villains plan/duplicitous theme.
Spectres is just OTT for the sake of it.
I like them both but there is something haunting and revealing about Skyfall that puts it over the top for me.
It’s Amazing. :)
I dont like the colour palette of Spectre. The lighting is often too dark with too much muted browns. Not good cinematography
Agreed - and that opening sequence drives me crazy its so washed out.
A new ranking coming anytime soon? 😃
Both movie are great!!! ❤️❤️❤️
The more you talk about Spectre the more Luke slips into a depressive comatose state 😂

Skyfall is by far my favourite! Spectre is fine, but no comparison in my book.
That’s a title I never expected!? For me it’s not even close. I was bummed by how dull SPECTRE was.
There's a really a great movie locked away in Spectre somewhere, but, gee, that movie is all over the place.

Spectre.
I call the last 5 the Freudian Bonds -s-.
The villian has a lair not a layer.😳
Lets not forget Tarantino also said Temple of Doom was the best Indy film.
There are small things in both Skyfall and Spectre that I don't like, but I like them both overall. It's hard for me to say which one is better?
Spectre might have the classic Bond 'hardware' in terms of tropes and check box elements but lacks decent 'software' for me, acting, writing and story.
Why is this even a debate?
I can't believe this is even a question.
Was this ever a debate?
Me? A tie! 🙂
The Spectre watch is definitely better
Here's a better question. Spectre vs NTTD. Which is worse?
Among the easiest questions for me to answer. SKYFALL!
Spectre is among the worse in my opinion.. No time to die is not my cup of coffe either 😛
I’ve never met anyone who enjoyed Spectre more than Skyfall, but that’s what’s great about the Bond community. It’s ok to be wrong 😏
Now if Silva had been Blofeld's half brother and Spectre could have been a revenge on Bond story instead
Casino Royale is the best outside of the first Connery movies
This isn’t even debatable 😂…..Skyfall is leagues better than Spectre in almost every conceivable way….
1) Cinematography
2) Story
3)Villain
4) Judy Dench is Fantastic in this film
5) No crappy love story that isn’t believable
6) Spectacular action
7) Better locations
8) Daniel Craig at his Peak as Bond….
Need We go on 😂
In addition to:
9) Bond theme song. Skyfall is one of the best ever while Writing's on the Wall is one of the worst, if not the worst.
Quentin is right!
@@D76-z2h interesting. Your the first to say rhis
I think Skyfall is the better of the two BUT, I like the watch in SPECTRE better lol
A view to a kill would me my choice between the two
Skyfall, no question. Bond facing the end of his career with age and injuries. He just wants to go out on his own terms. Like a lot of us.
Like comparing fast food to a gourmet meal, Skyfall all the way.
Going against the trend here, but when I have to choose between them, I watch Spectre
Just so wrong. You probably use the word woke to describe NTTD.
@@pd1323 What makes my subjective opinion wrong?
Why don't you tell me why I'm wrong rather than just assert it. What is it you see interesting, entertaining or even laudable about these wretched films?
@@sandersson2813
I think the atmosphere and emotional heft of the Craig series outdoes anything prior.
Skyfall, it just works!
Can’t disagree more. The scotch taped pics of the villains while he’s walking through the dark was badass and reminded me of man with the golden gun
Spectre a fanflick
It’s Adrian Paul
Without the ponytail.
