The World Is Not Enough is a horribly underrated Bond film. The action is great, the real villain is a good plot twist, the music is fantastic, Brosnan puts on a great performance throughout and come on, guys, it's fun. All right, Denise Richards may divide opinion but I never minded her.
This is a great film. Awesome opening sequence. Brosnan at his peak. I think his Thomas Crown film came out the same year and he was great in that aswell.
I liked it very much. The part with the helicopters and the gigantic rotating blades was MORE than enough to justify the price of admission. I think this film stood out for its' ability to exploit Brosnan's agility...he moved as well or better than any other Bond, and the pretitle sequence with the boat and the hot air balloon...the underground scenes where he dodges that massive explosion and engages in a gunfight...and the aforementioned helicopter sequence...ALL relied heavily on his athleticism...
Brosnan has a special place in my heart as James Bond, under his stewardship I loved GoldenEye (And the N64 Game) but I became a little more than a fan with 'The World is not Enough', I started to buy each James Bond film as they came out, I got my first James Bond inspired purchase. Once again reenforcing the 3rd movie is the actor's best portrayal of 007. PB was spot on perfect. No one could have filmed his final confrontation with Electra better. On a personal note Garbage stopped by University of Delaware auditorium en route to Philadelphia and did a 2 hour 'sound check" performing live. I heard theme 2 months before it was commercially released
I love this film. I managed to walk up to the roof of the O2 arena this year the day after Q the Music in honour of this film and its opening, which is one of my absolute favourite openings to a James Bond movie ever.
TWINE is one ofy favourites, as for die another day it was the first film I saw at the cinema and my first bond experience at the cinema it will always hold a special place in my heart
I always liked this one. Had great villains. Great music. Brosnan was great. Opening sequence was a blast. Dr Christmas was ...the music was great. I was about to have my first child when this came out. My wife was getting a baby shower, so my brother and father in law and I went to see this in the theater. I'm bad at knowing these anniversaries.
Fans lately don't appreciate Brosnan's effort in this one. In every frame of the film you can feel how hard he's trying. It's a breath of fresh air compared to Connery or Craig speaking up every time they were disillusioned with the role. Pierce wanted this to be a good movie, and he's the only Bond actor who seemed grateful to have gotten the role. Other than him the story, despite its issues, is one of the best in the series. The derided campy bits and flaws are found, sometimes worse, in plenty of other Bond movies.
I do wish he stuck with more of a Roger style Bond like he did in TND, it's where his strengths lie. I respect him wanting a serious Bond script, but he's better as a light-Bond.
Not only does David provide me with intersting content based on kindred passions, but his wonderful usage of vocabulary is a great addition to my own as an individual looking to increase their word range for better articulation.
I was there front row of the crowd at the London World premier at the Empire Leicester Square. I saw all the cast. Including Desmond Llewellyn 🍸 The Q boat navigating around the streets of East London is a jumping the Shark moment, but other than that ridiculousness, the film is a decent entry in the series 🍸
If you want to introduce somebody to Bond movies in 15 minutes, pre title secuence of TWINE is the perfect expression of Bond: cool gunbarrel, action, elegance, fun, fireballs, stunts, beautiful places, pretty girl, bad guys, M, Q and his gadgets, David Arnold ost, vehicle chase, puns, even Brosnan pain face in the fall... Also title credits with The World Is Not Enough by Garbage is top in the saga. In minutes you can see the many faces of Brosnan Bond, relaxed, sarcastic, cold, seductive, educated, classy, implacable. More later with Elektra we can see his vulnerability, but this is about the first 15 minutes. I'm with you David, this is Brosnan peak as an actor, love Thomas Crown and TWINE, I think the haircut was key 😂😂 Thanks for the video, with the Goldfinger anniversary a lot of people don't remember this great film and don't give the appretiation it deserves even in it's 25th anniversary. Born in 2000 and grown up with Brosnan Bond, this is MY Bond Film ❤️❤️.
I think it is absolutely one of the most underrated films in the franchise. It's Brosnan's best performance in my opinion and Elektra is one of my favorite Bond villains of all time.
Great video David. I certainly agree. TWINE was my debut cinema Bond film, so I do have it close to my heart. The formula is present, but with a novel take on all the old tropes. Brosnan gives us a charmingly lethal portrayal, though the scripts more melodramatic moments, plays into Bronsan's foibles as an actor, being too animated, and less of the economy of movement that both the literary and cinematic versions of Bond should have. (Which goes against David's point, I will admit) The true standout of the picture is the villainous Elektra King, played with extreme relish by the gorgeous Sophie Marceau. She morphs from a winged dove, so favoured by Ian Fleming, into a megalomaniacal miscreant, with severe daddy issues.
ALL the Brosnan films are so entertaining and a delight. Great movie analysis. ..and by, the way, Die Another Day is also great - ageing like a fine wine - in fact many of the futuristic ideas are becoming reality or a work in progress ….even the stealth car!
Elektra might be the best Bond villain from the Brosnan films because her character plays so well on what we know about Bond and how he interacts with women. Her being murdered in cold blood by Bond is one of the best moments for the Brosnan-led Bonds. The story, I don't think, is very complicated, but Renard is underused and Christmas Jones is... yeah. Taken as a whole, I'd put it second behind TND for the Brosnan Bonds.
Lifestyle-wise, TWINE is actually a great film. Brosnan has his best haircut in this movie, his tuxedo is finally sans vest, it's one of the few Bond movies where he wears glasses as gadgets, and his suits are a tad more tailored than in previous Brosnan's entries. Plus, he doesn't look as skinny as he did in Goldeneye and not as "old-man chubby" as he did in Die Another Day.
The one thing I’ve always loved about the movie is the boat chase, and the ending from the submarine fight to the kiss. As an adult when I watch it the theme song makes sense
This is my fourth favorite Bond film and second favorite Brosnan film. It’s just a fun and tightly shot film with a lot of confidence from the recurring cast members in particular. If Goldeneye is the martini then this is the Bollinger.
Jennifer Connelly [who was two years away from her Oscar for 'A Beautiful Mind'] would have been a good alternative as Dr Christmas Jones although that character was clearly not a priority in the writing according to the 'behind the scenes' book [and the character was going to be French before Sophie Marceau was cast as Elektra]. Allegedly MGM wanted Sharon Stone for Elektra post Basic Instinct...which would have made the twist fairly obvious!
Maybe its just me, but even the Bond movies that are largely accepted as "Bad" I still enjoy. Roger Moore's Bond was campier than any other Bond and we all still love him. Brosnan was falling to the camp in his last 2 films pretty hard. Which is why when they went to Craig they went more serious. I feel we all forget that pre-9/11 movies were very different. Look at the Schumacher Batman films and then compare them to the Nolan Batman films. The world changed in 2001 and that mood was reflected in our art. Bond is not isolated from that. That was a big part of why Die Another Day fell flat on its face. It didn't fit the global tone of the time when it came out.
My papa loved the James Bond movies. I am so thankful I saw most of them with him before he passed. BTW I think Broccoli should get Tarja Turunen to sing the next Bond movie theme song.

This is in my top 12. I love this film. One of my most watched. Electra King is around my fourth fav Bond Girl. Great actress. One of my favorite Villians. This is one of my favorite pre title sequences. The film score incredible. Brosnan in that banker scene, just pure Flemming Bond for me, just like Bond in Pushkins hotel room. Bonds glasses in casino room great gadget. Love this film. Rennard for me was well acted, just they built him up to be a Superman. Then on sub, his and Bonds fight, was a let down. I wanted an Alec Trevelyan ( still my fav villian) fight. But Rennard opposite of Whittaker for me. Whittaker didn’t have enough screen time. His villian was perfect for the eighties. Majarhadeen we’re on news then. But Whittaker showdown with Bond a fav of mine. His war rooms, with the lighting, weapons, had Bond for a bit. But I was so built up early on Rennard, then Electra stole the show. She ate up scenery on screen for me. I kinda forgot about Rennard. But love your take on Rennard, it fits perfectly. He is really the henchman. TWINE is great film. Goldeneye still my fav Film. ( only negative is score for me, except great Tank scene score).
Oh I loved this one! I think it was my reintroduction to 007. I Saw The Spy Who Loved Me late in the initial run in the 70's at a budget cinema...and saw FYEO and Octopussy 100's of times when they came to HBO...but lost interest after AVTAK....because of school or whatever. I went with some friends to see TWINE and really liked it and because DVD had just become mainstream immediately went and bought Goldeneye and TND...I have been firmly hooked since....with a minor caveat of Die Another Day. After Goldeneye it might be my favorite Brosnan film.
Brosnan was borne to be Bond and he was probably best in this film, I enjoyed all his films (even DAD) but Tomorrow Never Dies is my go to Brosnan Bond film.
I've spent the past couple months rewatching over and over my least favorite Bond films. I've been very intentional about it. TMWTGG, Diamonds are Forever, You Only Live Twice, Moonraker, Die Another Day, Goldeneye (just kidding!!😂) Are some of my least favorite films, however, in doing so much intentional viewing of these productions I've gained a new appreciation for each of them! Though I'll likely never be able to appreciate them like I do my favorites I'm now able to watch them and enjoy them as they were intended. Though Diamonds will almost always be at the bottom of the heap for me... An eternal cellar dweller. And yes, TWINE was in that list and I've gained a new appreciation for it as well!
This movie does not need defending - this and GoldenEye being my favourite PB films. Great threat that actualized with Nordstream(kind of) just like the previous movie's threat(somewhat). Great villain in Elektra.
It’s got all of the elements, but it just falls a bit flat for me. I think it was a wasted opportunity - after the opening titles, it never really takes advantage of the period - it could have been the Cool Britannia bond but instead it’s just a ho-hum action adventure with forgettable characters and forgettable locations. With a director who actually had some flair (maybe a Tony Scott or John Woo) and one of the myriad British thesps we were blessed with at the time as a properly diabolical Bond villain, I think it could have been a classic. But that is always my main complaint with Eon- taking the cheap/safe option with directors. Look at MI - Tom Cruise knows Mcquarrie is the man so he pays him whatever it takes to keep him on board. Eon struck gold with Martin Campbell and they should have paid him whatever it took to keep him- he should have been directing every Brosnan bond.
I think I have to disagree with your idea that killing Electra makes bond darker. In fact it does the opposite. He didn’t want to have to kill her. He genuinely cared about her. He gave her a chance. And afterward he recognized the tragedy of it. You said killing her made him a better bond. Well, it did, but in a good way, not a darker way.
Thought this movie was good from the start. Was shocked to learn years later that it had a bad reputation. My favorite Pierce Brosnan performance as Bond.
I have a bias because Brosnan was my first Bond growing up, but the first three including The World is not Enough lands in my top five. The other two slots including Dalton's tenure. Despite being a defender, the movie is clunky at times that holds it back, but I've seen it so many times, I look through it finding appreciation in all the little nuances I'd argue places it in a misunderstood classic.
I do think it is 'forgotten' in the sense that Brosnan's Bond stint feels like 'Goldeneye...and the rest' with a general audience. I do think it is stuck between wanting to do new things and sticking to the increasingly tired 'Bond formula'. It's the 3rd best Brosnan film for me but certainly far better than 'Die Another Day'.
7:44 The end of Spectre? It is not exactly THE end of Spectre. There's still a big chunk of the movie after he escapes the lair. But granted, it is like a video game. And what about NTTD? It feels like a video game to me every time someone uses a gun. Nobody is saying anything right now, but I feel this will change in the future. Remember, I said it first, right here. 😁Cheers. 😉
This was my very 1st bond film i went to see and what i love about the film is when bond killed elektra it show how cold blooded james bond actually is
Couldn't agree more David, especially around Brosnan's depth or darkness. TWINE is seen as less serious than Goldeneye but when is Pierce more believable - in that terrible scene on the beach with Natayla talking 006 or when he shoots Elektra. He's awesome and the whole film hits that 3rd 007 rule
I really liked Brosnan I just don't think he got the opportunity to explore Bond. There were moments in each of his vulnerability but they were tacked into the scripts and felt out of place. He really wanted to do what Craig would up doing in it's entirety. Great vid by the way
Exactly, they couldn't decide on a characterization for him. Every movie has a different director and it feels like he's playing a different Bond. They kept experimenting, which is arguably good, but let Pierce be the hamster before throwing him out early.
The World is Not Enough was the first James Bond movie I watched at the cinema. Great film. One of my favorite movies. At time I thought it was Pierce Brosnan's best Bond movie since GoldenEye. I liked Denise Richards and it's a shame she got shit on for playing Dr. Christmas Jones. I don't understand why Denise Richards got all the hate for playing Dr. Christmas Jones. She wasn't that bad.
Brozza pound for pound had the best pre-titles of all the Bond Actors, and TWINE was his Rumble in the Jungle. I'm not sure the analogy hangs together but I'm sticking with it.
This was my favourite Bond film as a kid. I dunno if it’s because of my age and because it was the first one I went to see in cinemas but I was in love with this movie. This and goldeneye are obviously Brosnans best with tomorrow being a close third.
Love that shirt!
Yes I think on reflection renard henchman 💯
Maintile Brosnan:
1. The World Is Not Enough
2. Goldeneye
3. Die Another Day
4. Tomorrow Never Dies
TWINE has been pure Bondian class since day one.
I've never understood why it wasn't liked by some.
It has it all !
I do remember the World not Enough didn't get the hype that the others had. It is one of the great ones in the bond franchise.
Can’t believe this is 25 years old. This was the ‘new’ Bond film when I started getting into the series ….
if you think of a mix between the soundtrack, the opening, the girls...just one of the best Bond movies, hands down.
Does this need defended? It's a great movie 👍
Tomorrow Never Dies is my favourite Brosnan Bond film, but The World Is Not Enough is probably the best.
Hi David,
When will you visit Istanbul? The city where 3 bond movies take place?
Thought this movie was good from the start. Was shocked to learn years later that it had a bad reputation. My favorite Pierce Brosnan performance as Bond.
By far the best part of TWINE IS the pre-title sequence hands down!! In my humble opinion.
Between TWINE and Brosnan’s Thomas Crown Affair, ‘99 was a great year for movies! No need for defending TWINE…the PTS is the best of his movies!
Hot take but this might have been the last truly great Bond movie that actually felt like Bond…
😁Cheers. 😉
This was my very 1st bond film i went to see and what i love about the film is when bond killed elektra it show how cold blooded james bond actually is
It does have winning formula
Goldfinger's 60th has overwhelmed all the other Bond anniversaries this year. Nobody seems to care about the 50th of The Man With the Golden Gun.
The World Is Not Enough is Brosnan's best Bond film in my opinion.
My favourite Brosnan film. My favourite Bond is Licence to kill, and I also like George Lazenby. It's a shame property of a lady wasn't made.
Does TWINE need to be defended. It's the second best Brosnan.
Overall I like the film. Just wish the last act wasn’t so weak. Such an underwhelming, awkward fight with a “formidable” villain.
Uh, I know you address this but, it needs no defending. It’s one of the best bond movies there is.
