    The way I see Goldfinger is, it has absolutely the best theme song and title sequence, that part is - there is only one word - outrageous - and it sets up the film so well. Goldfinger does live up to the song - he's outrageous. He is my favourite Bond villain, funny, charismatic, ruthless. His henchman Oddjob is outrageous. He's my favourite Bond Henchman - the way he crushes that golf ball - pure cinema. Pussy Galore - just the name is outrageous and she is one of my favourite Bond women, after Fiona Volpe (2) and Tracy (1). She's charismatic, competent, cool and with the perfect sprinkling of arrogance. Bond's car is outrageous. I was 7 when the movie came out and I, like every boy I knew, had a Dinky model of it. That idea, of an ejector seat - outrageous. Connery as Bond here is charismatic. It's his most difficult role as Bond since for half the movie he's a prisoner. But even then, he constantly takes the initiative and ultimately defeats Goldfinger via his hold on Pussy. He is also confident, cool and charismatic. The Ken Adam sets - he'd outdo this movie in You Only Live Twice but none the less, it is pure style.
    It is the ultimate James Bond movie. It is not my personal favourite but everything in Bond hangs of just two movies - this one and Dr No. Of the two, this in my mind makes the greater contribution.
    I agree with you entirely, for me the best of Bond is pure fun. I happen to think of OHMSS as fun, though - yes it does end in tragedy but the journey is so terriffic.

    I LOVE the soundtrack to this film. I love the big brass sound. It is so bombastic, so Bond-like. It's the best of the lot. Everything about this film is pure comic book and it just hits the right notes throughout. Not just the music, but the lighting, the color, the opulence, the characters. It's pure pop corn gold. There is no other Bond film that is as iconic as this film. Having said that, it doesn't make my top ten list of Bond films!

  • @AnthonyP73
    @AnthonyP73 8 месяцев назад +2

    That's incredible, I was literally just revisiting your Thunderball debate! Great discussion lads, really good points all around. I had no idea Calvin could do a decent Connery impression, that was very good!
    The thing about the long sequence where Bond is held prisoner, it appears that Goldfinger holds all the cards. We don't necessarily know how Bond is going to get out of this, so the stakes are raised.

    Nostalgia. If you're David's age or, like me, older (DOB 1961), nostalgia is expressly or implicitly a factor in any discussion of Bond films. The first five are absolute time machines that transport us older folk back to a place in time that is no more, but which we fondly remember. Goldfinger, of course, is in that category.

    My Two Cents:
    - I can't find a quote but I heard even Guy Hamilton had an issue with the scenes at Auric Stud. The film does grind to a halt after moving at a brisk pace (Like Thunderball! 😝). Things really don't pick up again until the finale but even then, it's not that good. In the novel, it was absolutely chilling to arrive to a town that appears to be dead. In the movie, I just see soldiers fainting on cue. That's why GF doesn't make number one for me. Most of the last third of this movie drags.
    - Goldfinger is arguably one of the few times that James Bond is actually acting like an agent for an intelligence gathering agency or a "spy". They get information and pass it along and that's what Bond does throughout most of the film.
    - There's a chilling aspect to Barry's music when the soldiers are being knocked out at Fort Knox. The music sounds emphasizes the fact that to Goldfinger, he's doing as much destruction as a building being erected. The massive loss of life? To quote the man himself: "American motorists kill that many every two years."
    - I also agree that Auric Goldfinger is the best Bond villain both on a surface level and a substantial level. Physically, he looks highly unusual which is a great thing when you want an actor to play a villain. On a substantial level, you feel the deep resentment Goldfinger has towards Bond. He is well aware of how he looks and he has to pay women in order to be seen with him. When you take that into account, it's no wonder why Goldfinger wants to castrate Bond via laser, it's personal attack. That sort of pettiness, combined with his grotesque appetite for Gold, actually makes him more interesting than the other Bond Baddies that are generally not much more than cloak and dagger. Auric seems more human. I also feel the same about Max Largo from Never Say Never Again. There's a pettiness and humanity their too.

    • @RobertR3750
      @RobertR3750 6 месяцев назад +2

      The book mentions something the movie doesn't. Goldfinger made a practice of painting women gold, not to kill, but to pretend that he was literally making love to gold and was sexually satisfied by it. He would pay a woman a thousand dollars to do it, and would not kill them. Jill 's death was a revenge killing.

    My first Bond movie I watched in the 70's and my favourite. My best scene is Bond on the table with the laser pointing between his legs, just the sound the laser makes it so creepy and suspenseful. Also has a great villain Auric Goldfinger, Odd Job, named because he did odd jobs, Pussy Galore. Amazing ken Adam sets of Fort Knox and lots of Gold. Soundtrack is amazing and that Bassey song needs to be bold and brash to match up to the movie. Only downside i can think of is it's not shot in widescreen. Great review you two :)

    Seen Goldfinger so many times, but saw it on the big screen at the Prince Charles cinema back in Feb. Still a great Bond film (if somewhat overrated - it's 6 in my rankings) and surprised how humorous it really is. Everyone at the cinema was laughing at the "Man Talk" scene, a lot of the Miami sequence, Bond interacting with Moneypenny and Q, golf scene, Bond's one liners all the way up to Goldfinger's death. That made my row and the row behind me laugh like idiots!
    Similar to when I saw Licence To Kill on the big screen a few years back. The darkest, grittiest Bond movie. And yet certain scenes made people laugh!

    The gold standard (pun intended) of Bond movies by some margin. This along with From Russia with love are the best Bond movies, but Goldfinger has more of everything and goes to the top. The best Bond in splendid form and a memorable villain. Great locations and it doesn't lose pace along the way - Bond doing spy stuff in the beginning, the golf match, the mountain chase and factory in Switzerland, the reveal of the masterplan in Kentucky and the assault on Fort Knox - all great and epic scenes! A clear 10/10

    I completely agree with Calvin in that I can easily find myself reflecting the many criticisms the film gets and going along with the consensus that it's overrated. But when I sit down and watch it, none of those thoughts are in my mind, and I have fun.

    I would have to ask myself why I would suggest this as a first must watch for someone. It would be because of first impressions. Opening sequence, Bond completes a mission, pow, q the music. It has the clothing styles of Bond. It has a good basic villain and henchman vs Bond. Bond converses with M, and Q, and the car is introduced with gadgets. It would leave the person wanting to see the next one. Then I would suggest other ones they are now primed for.
