This show is so good.... I hope we get more seasons
I fully trust Blake if he decides to extend this show to multiple seasons but I can see the path to ending this in one season
Me too!!! Even if Jason storyline dies off I'd love to see versions of Ryan or Amanda's or even Leightons stories. What happened to Leighton in the corridor? Did Ryan and Amanda find eachother in the radical empathy world?
That scene where he was about to open the door and he just stood there all confused it was a throwback when the therapist told him maybe he’s more comfortable in the corridors
That explanation makes sense to me. He was having a full circle moment realizing that Amanda was correct in her assessment of him
That scene between Amanda2 and Jason1 was intense.she took a HARD RIGHT TURN ON PURPOSE. SHE HAD GRACE, character, and integrity.
She deserved to choose herself! We're so interested to see if that is actually the last we see of her.
1000% it was the same universe OG Ryan was trapped in. It wouldn’t make any sense to have it look so similar for the sake of it.
Agreed
I (Luke) am happy others saw what I saw. I felt like I was on an island when I brought that up in the breakdown hahah. I wouldn't be shocked if it didn't come back into play but this is my head canon for now
They both had northern lights!
I think Amanda and Ryan will make a box visit with the 2 ampules that were left with her.
Also Jason 1 left her 2 vials. I feel like that’s foreshadowing that she will find Ryan
As a mindset/manifestation coach & a trained interrogator / expert of the subconscious mind… the box represents the best analogy and description of the subconscious mind I’ve ever seen.
I’ve just started using this show with my clients using the show as the analogy and they are seeing amazing mindset and manifestation breakthroughs like never before.
This is one of the coolest comments I have ever seen. We have a loose commitment from Blake Crouch to interview him about his show after the season ends. With your permission, I would love to mention this comment to him!
@@Bingetowntv Absolutely! Please mention to him. He's a genius in his version of the subconscious minds portrayal.
Every thought we have immediately effects the reality around you. The more aware you become in the now moment, the more you can shift (with out a box), the more your shift, the more you control and command the narrative!.
As an interrogator, I look more for subconscious cues then what people actually speak. I listen for breathing changes, body ticks, tone/ voice changes... because the subconscious never lies, it always reveals the true state of being.
We call the interrogation room "the box" and we are taught how to go into a pre-designed alter ego when we enter... and we always control and command the narrative.
For coaching, I call the box going to zero point... and I too use 3 minutes as the time frame...
I've been looking for a way to quantify the subconscious mind because I teach through analogies. This show is pure perfection! I was thinking about doing a breakdown of the episodes from my perspective too.
Great job in your videos! Loving your breakdowns!
It makes sense to me that OG Ryan and Amanda would end up in the same "Progressive Chicago." Evil J said he thought of a world his friend would like to see. OG Ryan was sooo close to completing Lavender Fairy in the OG universe, but its intended purpose was COMPLETELY different. It was inherently empathetic... Intended to be medically progressive, lessen pain, and ultimately help people. Evil J uses it for selfish reasons, scientific recognition, and fame. In fact, he didn't even create it and never told Ryan 2 what he needed him to create the compound for in the first place. I think Lavender Fairy would 100% already exist in Progressive Chicago, and that Progressive Ryan would have created it while Progressive Jason is selling Progressive Insurance.
The ending of your comment 😂😂😂😂😂 but love that! that definitely makes sense! Our worry is that bc it’s literally limitless possibilities that it would be a little weird if they ended up in the same spot. But your thought process is definitely convincing us!
Yes, Ryan and Amanda were in the same universe, and Ryan was looking for Amanda, that means he probably saw Amanda getting in this universe from the box.
I got emotional when good Jason got back to his own world! That was a great ending as well!
I still cannot stop thinking about that ending. Definition of mind-blowing
@@Bingetowntv I initially thought it was 'Evil Jason' who entered the gun shop after 'Good Jason'. Then I found out it was a 'Jason 6'! WTF!
I slammed my hand on the table and shouted "YES!" when he got back.
I don't think it would be that coincidental that og Amanda and jason 2 thought of the one exact same world. They probably described it together during pillow talk seeing as they were lovers. And Jason 2 created the world that he trapped Ryan in.
Agreed too suspicious
hmmm the splitting of Jason at every decision is a cool idea and I would be happy with that ....technically they don't need that they just need multiple similar universes and they already showed a universe where Jason and Amanda couldn't make it to the box ....I guess both can be true
....also if he is splitting his universe should be splitting too
So many possibilities!! That’s true though there should also be limitless universes that are VERY similar to his own with just minor changes
I KNEW something felt off with the hotel scenes and we th the snaps that episode but now I think they were showing splits in the time line the colours were quite important
Episode 6. They've been showing different versions of Amanda and Jason a long time. This is the key. Whenever they question going back in the box, we have a potential swap. When she asked him to dance potential. In the hotel bed when she asked if she should go to the other bed, potential swap. Listen for the thunder. When he left her in the hotel room, potential swap. They are all over the last 3 episodes
Great observation!!! Yes every single decision provided the opportunity for a new Jason to branch off
@@Bingetowntv thanks! Love watching you guys talk very fun. Can't wait to see what madness ensues.
PBJ teams up w/ OG Jason to beat Evil J. OG Jason gets the happy ending with Daniella and PBJ goes back to Progressive Chicago to be with Amanda. The End. ❤😂 Oh, and OG Ryan comes home, helps Ryan 3 get clean and back on his feet.
I would vote for you to write the next few episodes if that's the happy ending we get 🤣
Technically, PBJ is the version of OG Jason that should stay with Daniella since he's the one who doesn't have a history with Amanda. That is, if PBJ is the one who was the one we saw back at Velocity when Amanda saw herself get shot.
@@whitneybwallaceI totally forgot about that version of Jason ( dead Amanda) makes sense because that Jason was heading for the box
Not sure about the portrait it might have been Holly his twin sister .. it was quick there was definitely 2 kids
I don't think Holly was a sibling. I just think she's Max's organ donor. When Jason first sees him, Max says "It's your other son." That's why he wasn't super confused being mistaken for Charlie. Plus, I don't think he would have referred to Holly as "that girl [is dead]" if she were their sister, much less a triplet.
Also, at this point in the story, Jason has been trying to get home for 29 days. In episode 4, when Jason and Amanda start to figure out that their emotional state factors into where the box takes them, Jason remembers that it's Charlie's birthday and tells the very detailed story of the first time he and Daniella heard TWO heartbeats. It wouldn't make sense plot-wise for Jason this late in the game, with one ampoule left, go be in an emotional state to take him to a universe where at some point OG Jason and OG Daniella ever would have heard three heartbeats for a Holly Dessen to exist.
I love the fact that in the show (one of) the major visual signfiers for the Progressive world (....worlds? Jury's still out for me as to whether Amanda really did end up in the same universe as the one that Ryan was trapped in) is the presence of the "Spire" Tower in Chicago.
Anyone one that knows anything about Chicago architecture or architecture in general as well as sad sordid tale of the actual never-built Santiago Calitrava Tower, 'The Spire' (or just architects and Architecture geeks like myself) would have loved seeing it. Particularly how in OUR real world it ends up as just a big massive hole in the ground*, almost showing how "unprogressive" we are in comparison.
(*they began the excavation to construct it by diggin the entire pit for the Foundation and parking, but then the project stalled/got cancelled)
Luke, you are NOT way off: I also believe Amanda & Ryan are in the same universe.
!!!! Now the next question becomes is that supposed to be a cool easter egg or will we see that pay off in a satisfying way in one of the final 2 episodes?
@@Bingetowntv 2 ampules that Jason put in her purse, Amanda and Ryan, they have 1 each. Or maybe Ryan can make more where they are. Oooor we may never see them again...
As Anakin Skywalker would say, “This is where the fun begins”
Can’t wait for the next ep!!!!!
Once again I have to reiterate: the OG Daniela actually likes evil Jay more than OG Jay. But she’s also afraid of the loss of control that she had over og j
I love this series. I've now watched it over 10 times. Infatuated, addicted, totally hooked. The scenes/cinematography, the stories, the music score.
Yes, there are a couple of fundamental flaws (such as the cube manifesting in realities, but its never explained that this happens) and a scripting error in the Jupiter episode and episode two could have been scripted more effectively, but overall it is such a compelling and intelligent sci fi show. The underpinning theme of "the path not taken" and the idea that a state of mind can determine our paths is so compelling. It really makes you question your own life.
I would love a season 2, to tie off all the loose ends such as Blair 2's journey, what happens to both Leighton 1 and Leighton 2, how Ryan 1 manages to find Amanda 2.
And of course what happens with Jason 1, Daniela and Charlie ... and if they find a world where Max is alive but his family are dead and so Max goes to live with Jason 1 etc.
And does Jason 2 go back to his reality or does he find another reality where Daniela and Charlie don't have a Jason. Jason 2 still has his storage unit with unused ampules.
Here's a crazy idea ... what if Daniela finds out that she has fallen pregnant to Jason 2. A crazy story could come out of this.
I really hope Season 2 gets the green light.
Evil Jay uses a totem. To track the worlds. He took a picture with the cell phone and he had a bag of phones.
Hmmm interesting so you’re saying he uses a picture of the world to get him back?
@@BingetowntvI thought it was the cell phones but yeah
Jason 3 could be the jason that fricked amanda in the hotel. Or something similar, where OG Jason had a decision to make, split off, then both jasons (or more??) went back into the box, and have found their way back to og jasons world
*Jason 2 looked so surprised he needed a type of licence to buy guns, either he just wasnt aware or it's not his universe, it's Jason 3's universe, so our Jason 2 isn't home, he is in a very similar universe.*
🤟🏽🤙🏽🤟🏽
Sliders did similar stuff where they really think they are home, it's still season 1 of Dark Matter so it's likely he isn't quite home.
There’s definitely scenarios where it’s almost exactly his world with just minuscule differences where he may not realize right away. Would be a game changer if we think he’s home but he’s not
OG Jason has the Psi Symbol (the Wave Function symbol) on his backpack.
XOJimmy69 you sicko!
I just realized you've been watching this masterpiece on a cellphone 😂.
That should be a crime against cinema. 😂
Hahahaha 😂😂 Jim here! Yes I know it’s awful. I can only watch the screeners on my cell phone but I’ve been rewatching the eps as they air on a better screen 😂😂😂
Forgot to mention the whole "It's a Wonderful Life" theme! While he's running down the street past that theater, the listing of movies is:
1. It's a Wonderful Life
2. Summer Frost
3. Upgrade
Summer Frost and Upgrade are both other works by Blake Crouch. Little fun fact there
Amazing!!! We love Easter Eggs! Great catch!
Ready to have all of your minds blown. I was watching the episode with the AD Audio on and it stated that it was Jason #6 in the gun store. Don't believe me go back and rewatch the end with the deaf Audio on. DUN DUN DUN
A Reddit post mentioned that they counted the Jasons and that was the 6th one we've seen so far. Why stop at 6!
Jason is a scientist so he sticks to facts over emotions which is why he would think of factual things, I.e. structures, factual elements of his world, rather than the emotional connections when dealing with the Box a scientific thing.
That definitely makes sense! It just seems to us that as an intelligent person he’d realize hair length isn’t super descriptive 😂😂
the rubber band will be important when OJ is trying to prove which one he is. my hunch, ps i called the amanda exit, her navigation experience and Max :)
I believe we shouted out one of your comments on the last podcast but you absolutely deserve some more credit and will get another shoutout on our next pod! We love talking about your comments
@@Bingetowntv Haaa😂🤣 U guys are the best! no worries. ok so can we discuss Jason 3 in the gun store. just rewatched, we're lead to believe we've just met J3. But it's a misdirect. That guy is J6. Remember I mentioned the wake we leave behind each of us... I think the last 29 days of travel will produce a whole lotta of J's and we're about to start seeing them all. 🍿Thoughts? 🤔
BONUS: of course there was an Obama Tower in Amanda's world that included ' agreeing on what facts are'. Besides being from shytown, Obama famously said; "One of the biggest challenges that we have to our democracy is the degree to which we don’t share a common baseline of facts."
Everyone keeps pointing out that Ryan and Amanda are in the same world, but ignoring the fact that she is definitely in the world that bad Jason showed original Leithan (from good Jasons world) during the training session. I do believe those may all be the same world at different times of day basically.
We need to go back and take a look! Great catch!
So, I just went back and watched the whole damn thing. Jason1 not only has the Wave Function on his backpack, he also has some black mark/stain/injury on his left thumbnail. The first Gun Store Jason has neither. And the Jason that hugs Matt at the Village Tap doesn’t have the symbol on his backpack. So there’s Jason Prime (1), Evil Jason (2), Matt-hugging Jason (3), first Gun Store Jason (could be 3 or 4), and then PBJ (Pinky Brace Jason, second gun store Jason, 4 or 5). That’s what I got so far.
Wow amazing work! We randomly guessed throughout the show that we may be watching other Jason’s and not realizing it but Blake has really done some great stuff with these fake outs
Heh, well, this show came at a time when I’ve been obsessed over physics and cosmology type vids…so honestly, as recently as a matter of a couple/few weeks ago, I prolly wouldn’t have even known what that psi symbol was or what it meant. And I didn’t even notice it until this last episode. I knew it had to be intentional since the wave function collapse (or lack thereof) is what leads to the Many Worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. So yeah, I’ve been nerding out hard. And that last scene in the gun shop, I loved the way they shot and cut it, along with the song choice. I even had to look it up. At first I thought it was score. I’ve watched it several times, lol. Excited to see where they take us this next episode…
Theoretically, Every time Jason is outside the box and has to make a decision, every decision he could possibly make is made, thus creating another Jason, another branch, who then in "their" branch goes back to "their" box to continue on "their" journey. Sometimes depending on the decision "Jason" dies or isn't able to get back to the box and his branch no longer can intersect "Jason1"s path, but more times than not the Branch Jason's get to their box and likely can/will intersect "Jason1". =0
Crazy! Limitless Jason’s 👀
New Question: does anyone else agree with me that the Photo of Amanda & Jason1--taken by the two guys in the bar, that Amanda is NOT aware of--will come into play?
Maybe as a way for Jason1 to prove who he is to Amanda if she & Ryan travel to Jason1's world--that is filled with multiple Jasons?
Just thinking ahead.
OG Jason (Jason 1) having the photo could definitely come into play!
Leaving behind the (2) ampules of “Lavender fairy” w/Amanda provides the only solution to reconstituting the last of the Lavender Fairy, provided this is Ryan 1,’s new world & Amanda can track him down. Ryan 2’s world has none left & Ryan 2 (it’s creator), is pfft.
Very interesting!!! 👀
The end is going to be a surreal tv game show mashup of The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game with Daniela1 quizzing a panel of Jasons about their life together.
🤣 let's go full weird. I'm here for it
that/citadel of Ricks
new Ryan is the catalyst for his company's drug to fail. It's a double win for EJ. 1. he's off the hook for Ryan's initial disappearance and two he gets "lavender ferry" to fail if he claims Ryan must have used it with these bad results ( ie he lost his mind can't remember anyone). EJ is able to cease production of that drug. ) 23:18
Amazing point ! Shouted you in the next ep 👍🏻👍🏻
@@Bingetowntv i stayed up late lastnight to catch your post, but my comment didn't save. ( was a sleepy girl)
So i hope U see this... just a word of thanks, it's been a pleasure, mates. Enjoyed this so much more because of YOU chuckleheads!! ❤️Bringetowntv
I get the feeling this show is going to leave me with the same response as when I had finished watching a film called “Primer”……arguably the best time travel film there is (arguably)
We Need to check that film out then!
What if evil Jay wants to go back what if Daniela wants evil jay
What if og Jay wants to go back to Amanda?
So many possible outcomes! And technically there’s a world where they all come true!
A potential Jason1x went to a world where Doc Brown asked him to help fix the timeline. Then that Jason steals the DeLorean and goes back to clobber Evil Jay before he can abduct Jason1a, and the whole season was a dream.
😂😂😂😂
What if Evil Jason did this already. What if he's the reason PBJ is there. Maybe he went to PBJ's life and bailed on it to go take over OG Jason's life.
Leaving a wake of shattered Jasons who want revenge behind him.....i'd be quite paranoid! He did have the camera on the box for a little bit...
I feel like they’re good at plugging most plot holes and answering questions but I would think Daniella would be wondering why everyone Jason including himself seem to turn in to different people. But then again Ryan is also working on the drug so Jason could say he’s an addict so he got carried away with that drug
Yea we are currently chalking it up to the fact that no sane person, who probably doesn't think about multiverses or anything like that, could even think of the possibility that he is a completely different person. She's so close to pushing the right buttons and/or asking the right questions though!
The scene that shows OG Jason writing about Daniela while seated and then talking about her while standing at the door of the box right before he opened it could quite possibly have been OG Jason and one of his variants. The idea of writing about the desired world came from a Blair variant that would have only been visited by Jason and Amanda. Variant Jason didn’t have an Amanda. Also, this would explain why they showed an odd number of ampules because variant Jason didn’t have to share but also had to figure it out on his own, causing him to deplete a larger number of ampules. Audio description calls the second Jason that enters the gun store “Jason 6” leading us to appreciate that there are other Jasons that we’ve not been introduced to yet…unless we have.
Wow your point about odd ampules just blew my mind! Great point!
I think it’s called Jason 6 because it’s maybe the 6 Jason to be shown on screen and not necessarily means that there are 6 Jason running around in the same universe. Like the one that he wanted to murder was Jason 5th and so on.
Mannnn Blake Crouch is a phenomenal author and him writing and showrunning this series has just been perfect. It's one thing to write a novel and another to adapt it to screen and he has gained mad respect for being able to knock both out of the park. I've been waiting for this series since it was first announced in Dec 2020 that Apple TV+ had picked up the rights. This is my all time favorite book and it's been a hell of a wait, but the show has NOT disappointed. Before the show came out Blake tweeted "I wrote the book. I wrote the show. The show is better." And he's been spot on.
I'll just say this, if Ep 8&9 continue in how close everything has been to the book, buckle up. We're in for a wild ending.
Also LOVE the pod! You 3 are killing it. Love the back and forth thoughts, ideas and jabs. First thing I do after watching the episode is hop on here to listen to you guys break everything down. Yall would be fun to grab a beer with! Yall had me dying at Jimmy's lethartic Jake take lol
Appreciate the hell out of you and this comment made us smile! This deserves a shoutout in our next podcast haha
After zooming in, sharpening and slowing down the video I'm pretty sure it's the elastic hair tie on his finger and not the wedding ring. When he first walks in he flicks his broken finger to narratively draw attention to it but the brace also obsucres his ring finger. He opens his hand in the upright position, again obscuring his ring finger, then turns the hand over as his puts it under the counter. This has to be all directior's choice and even the colour of the hair tie is a purposeful flesh colour rather than a bright red or blue probably to create confusion in this very scene. There's maybe one or two frames before he slips his hand under the counter where it looks like what's on his finger is bulkier than a wedding ring. If this is the case then can we really be sure that any time we've ever seen Jason with the hair tie on his finger that it's even the original Jason and not this (Jason6) or even any number of other Jasons in each episode? 🤷 The promotional poster also showed Jason and Daniela standing in front of endless Jasons in the background which now makes a lot more sense.
After sitting with this episode more and discussing it on the podcast, I actually agree with you that it does look like the same band on his finger that OG Jason has. This show could definitely go 0-100 with the amount of Jasons we see in the next two episodes but godspeed to Blake explaining that to an audience hahah. It does sound like a ton of fun though.
2 thoughts evil J has tried different world many times ( so many cell phones) to find his perfect ‘world” to find his Daniella and kidnapping the third Jason ,just not sure about the 30 second time difference for the gun store, and maybe evil J triggered the third Jason .or OG jason choice of kissing Amanda triggered a third Jason
Yes if he has truly branched, it will definitely have to do with different decisions he has made. How did PBJ mess up his pinky? What situation was he in that our Jason wasn't?
Just finished the podcast - great job men. What if, PBJ is coming back to try and change what is about to happen with OGJ, and PBJ is OGJ but did a time travel thing to attempt to change the outcome. Like something really goes wrong with Charlie and Daniella - one of them gets killed, and now he is back to try and change that outcome.
Thanks for the kind words! Keeping our mouths shut for now as we have already recorded the next podcast but I will say answers are coming . . .
This is a far stretch, but amanda is walking around and notices a guy over reacting going from person to person freaking out that his friend just brought him here through a box everyone thinks his crazy but because its a world with alot of empathy people try to help him, people being : (Amanda) she helps him and sends him out though the box to find his world or something like that
Depending on how wild Ryan 1 is acting it could be noticeable enough for Amanda to even hear about it (people talking about it or something similar)
Is there a version where OG Jason stays with Amanda in her Chicago?
Yeah the thing that irks me the most is og Jason doesn’t think things thru. What kind of scientist is he?? But I guess he’s a science teacher and not a scientist
Yea he seems much more emotional than someone who dedicated their entire life to scientific discovery like Evil J
How did Evil J found mechanic Ryan ? And Ryan was too cool about it. Dos they explore what happened w Jason for that world?
I agree but he did say it was like talking to someone he already knew
This is something that will somewhat get answered in the next episode
@@Bingetowntv you guys were right about the intro. Its to signifiy that the Jasons are multiplying and changing too, not just the world. They've been showing us different variations of the Jason trying to get back this entire time.
@@Bingetowntv i guess you know things we don’t know
I hope Ryan finds Amanda in the radical empathy world!! He wouldn't know her but she would know him and could help him. With her ampoules, or maybe they'll ship 💕💒🩷🤞
The amps that were left for Amanda could just be an open-ended thread (for a future season??) or like you're saying, the pathway back to get OG Ryan back to the OG world. Bringing him back is my favorite theory but I also don't know how they would explain him being able to drive the box specifically back to the OG universe
@@Bingetowntv I'm literally praying we get a future season centered around Ryan, he's the best character! I'm not even bothered about the OG universe 🤞
They meant they only have 5 trips left (10 total)
Are you sure? He gave her 2 and he had 3 left in the tank from what we understood.
Can I just say,.....
That gun shop converstaion between the Gun store clerk and the first Jason who came through was super-frightening to me as an non-American.
Not to criticize your 2nd Amendment and gun laws or anything, but throughout the whole conversation you just couldn't shake the notion that this is NOT a guy who should be buying a gun. OR at least that the gun clerk should have sensed that this isn't someone I should be selling a gun to, but I guess it's her job.
At least they pulled it back again when she asked him if he had a FOID (the Firearms Owner ID, that the Chicago Police would issue). I guess the necessity for that when selling a gun takes away any concern over whether someone seems mentally or psychologically fit enough that you would be selling them a gun and puts the onus on the Cops instead to vet gun buyers' suitability to own guns.
But geeeez....
Also my other thought was how perplexing it was that for,.....I guess quite a few many Americans, ........this is exactly what their recourse would be, when facing a stressful situation.
Go buy a gun.
Sheeesh.
Yes it was pretty uncomfortable as people who don't have any interaction with gun culture beyond just being American! He was clearly in a state of stress or desperation, although I guess we have a lot more knowledge than the clerk who was just doing her job.
I came across the Channel by accident and I am impressed. 🎉 I am confused at the ending of Episode 7. Why are both “Jay” characters wearing the same clothes and asking to buy guns? It ended and left me confused 😅😮😢
Think the Many worlds “theory”
Glad to have you and thank you for the words! And yes, that is the question for episode 8. Is this a Jason from a completely different world with unknown motivations OR another Jason that possibly branched off from OG Jason? Either could work but I cannot wait to find out next week
Can’t wait 😂
The last Jason we saw was “Jason 6” per the audio closed caption. So we now have OG Jason, Evil Jason and Jason 6. I believe OG Jason and Jason 6 will team up to get rid of Evil Jason.
I think a few more "Jasons" will show up.
i can't imagine they team up,
Jason 6 is one of 100s of Jasons created as OG Jason traveled the multiverse making various decisions
The multiple Jason concept was in the book and one of my least favorite aspects as well. I was hoping it would be left out as it muddies everything up and detracts from the story IMO.
This adaptation is one of the very rare instances for me in that l actually prefer it over the book. In the book you rarely see what is happening with Evil Jason and the family. It’s almost all centered around OG Jason and Daniela and Charlie actually seem OK with it! They don’t seem to care and EG doesn’t really act strange or do anything. No one disappears either. It’s very one dimensional. There’s no Max either.
In the book they do go to a Utopian version of Chicago but Amanda doesn’t stay. She does leave OG Jason but you never hear about her again. There is no conclusion to her story and it’s very frustrating.
I love how this series is making this much more interesting but hopefully the last episodes aren’t rushed to a conclusion with lots of loose ends like the book was.
What’s the name of the book Kyle said he was reading at 34:07?
Ursula le guin the lathe of heaven. She's a fantastic author and explores many scifi and fantasy topics on a social level
Primer infinite infinities for infinite versions of all characters that know about the box
That would be a lot to handle in just two episodes!
Actually, the whole Seattle seceding or being part of a secceded new country is part of the narrative of a scenario where Oregon, Washington state, British Columbia Province in Canada and possibly even California would secede from the US and Canada respectively and join up to form a new Pacific coast country, possibly called "Cascadia".
....named after the actual and real world thing called the "Cascadia Movement" - which in itself based on the "Cascadia" bioregion that includes the aforementioned states, but also Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Montana and Alaska as well as Alberta Province in Canada as well.
It's doubtful those other states would be part of a actual secession, since in most of their cases they wouldn't be a good cultural fit with the three I mentioned. They're almost all conservative red states (Except Nevada, I believe) while Oregon, Washington, California and British Columbia are all liberal or liberal-leaning blue states and province (Alberta is a conservative province and is often considered the "Texas" of Canada)
In fact, California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia are working together in studying the feasibility of developing a high-speed rail line that could run from Southern California all the way to central British Columbia or beyond,.
It's doubful it would ever become a reality, but if something like.....say,....a Texas secession were ever to happen and trigger the breakup of the Southwest of the US, then it could potentially trigger a state like California (which is rich enough on its own with an Economy that's the 5th largest in the world in GDP terms) to consider doing the same or possibly teaming up with their northern neighbours to create "Cascadia"
(......or 'The New California Republic',.... if you're a fan of a certain game and TV show)
But then again.......there's obviously that whole "States seceding from the Union being illegal" little problem, which, the last time some states tried to do it,......the country went to a civil war and everything.
So there's that.
Some very interesting additional context, the same as your other comments! Do wonder how that secession movement went as like you said.....civil war and all.....
r u guys familiar with the citadel of Ricks
Of course. We love Rick and Morty and this does feel very similar to R&M's take on the multiverse in some episodes. The Citadel of Jasons has a nice ring to it
@@Bingetowntv it's the same thing except he's using a box instead of a portal gun :P
Just want to weigh in on your comments on multiple podcasts about why this show isn't catching on the way Silo did. I think there are two main reasons:
1) Silo had a compelling lead in Rebecca Ferguson who was consistently heroic, charismatic and the audience was rooting for her at every step. There is no one like this on Dark Matter. Joel Edgerton is the primary lead and he is neither compelling nor charismatic. Unlike Rebecca Ferguson, Edgerton is in a split role where one of his roles is intensely unlikeable and resented by viewers and the other is just blah. But here is the other part of that. Edgarton plays both roles in the same kind of low-key monotonous way that it's actually impossible to tell them apart except in context clues of the scene he is in. So the audience is constantly torn over whether to root for him or against him. In many ways, the two female leads are much more charismatic and interesting than Joel's character is, but they really don't get the same screen time, especially Jennifer Connelly. I also have to say that, in my view, Joel has zero chemistry with both female leads.
2) Silo had a great mystery that remainined at the forefront right on up to that final scene. What is the Silo? Why was it built? Are there other Silos like that? What is it like outside? On Dark Matter there is really no mystery. The basic concept was laid out in the first two episodes, and nothing really much has happened since then. I think the first seven episodes could easily have been collapsed into three episodes. The show has a lot of padding and the middle episodes especially were really slow. As an example, what was the point of concreting over the box if bad Joel ends up hammering through it anyway? I don't remember too many wasted scenes like that on Silo.
Now I'm not saying DM is a bad show. It's not. And it has some redeeming qualities, like the two female leads. And some of the special effects on a couple of the worlds are decent. But SIlo had amazing effects, as we see on every episode when we look and down the stairwell of the Silo. And Silo also had a great supporting cast, which, to my eye at least, is much better than that on DM. The test for me is which show would I ever rewatch. With the effects and the setting and the ongoing mystery and the joy of watching Rebecca Ferguson, I could give Silo another look. But having to watch several episodes of Joel Edgerton mumble his way through a bunch of boring scenes over and over for most of the series while Jennifer Connelly is mostly kept in the background? Pending the specifics of what happens on the last two episodes, I'll probaby give that a pass.
By the way, I'll say again you guys do far and away the best podcast around on this show.
(Luke's response): This was a very well thought out breakdown and I agree with most of your analysis on the subject of virality of the show. It's tough to compare these shows the deeper we get into Dark Matter since they really are 2 different genres. Post-apocolyptic mystery with multiple books worth of source material to flesh out vs a one season/singular book (for now)of hard Sci-Fi drama naturally comes with these major differences. I think we originally thought they would be more comparable by the end of the season but once all of the Sci-Fi concepts were established pretty early in the show, Dark Matter really leaned more into the character work and drama of getting our main character home to his family. I assumed we were going to get crazier and more out there concepts in the second half of the season but since that was not the case, I'm ok with looking at these individual shows as incomparable. You're spot on about Rebecca Ferguson since she is a rockstar right now in pop culture so that's always tough to compete against but if I was FORCED to pick between the two shows, I lean towards Dark Matter simply towards my bias of the genre (and that I was not on our Silo podcast lol). Based solely on Rotten Tomatoes, Critics slightly prefer Silo but the audience prefers Dark Matter but they both have really good scores. At the end of the day, I think both shows have been welcome additions to tv over the last year and I hope AppleTV keeps cranking out the great content.
@@Bingetowntv Those are all valid points. The one thing I might add is that the concept for Silo is somewhat more original than that of Dark Matter. Yes, there have been other stories of humanity having to leave the surface of the earth due to named or unnamed threats. In fact, another contemporaneous series - Snowpiercer - uses a similar concept, except that the apparent remnants of humainty are on a high-speed train rather than underground. And even more on the nose was a 2008 movie called City of Ember where humanity had fled to an underground city due to some unspecified problems on the surface. (And to be fair, City of Ember was based on a book published several years earier than the Hugh Howey works, and it surprises me that no one ever brings up similarities between the two works.) But there really aren't that many other high-profile examples of this particular plot device.
In the case of Dark Matter, though, the concept of parallel worlds has been beaten to death over the last several decades going back at least to the famous DC Comic Flash #123 from 1961, where the Earth-1 and Earth-2 concept was introduced. In TV, the parallel world concept has been used in numerous high-profile shows including Star Trek (the mirror universe), Fringe (which had its own Earth-1 and Earth-2 with the same actors playing the same roles in each), Counterpart (which pretty much copied the Fringe concept), various Arrowverse shows, including The Flash and Superman and Lois, Doctor Who, Sliders and many, many others, including, most recently, Constellation, which used the same Quantum superposition conceit to explain the multiple worlds.
Again, I'm not saying DM is a bad series. I just wish they had approached the concept in a slightly more original and exciting manner. As you suggest, the show has devolved into more of a character study than anything else, and I just don't think Joel Edgerton is dynamic enough as a lead to make this show special.
The boys are back!
😂 unfortunately I don't have screeners, I'm just apparently a sociopath that can make up a multiversal alibi in a few minutes 😅.
By the way, I'm actually 100% with Luke on this one. I'm betting Amanda2 brings Ryan1 back to his original universe. I went full tilt on all the signs Luke just mentioned as well.
I'm hoping Jason1, Jason3, Amanda2 & Ryan1 beat the hell outta Jason2 in the next episode.
I'm betting that Jason3 will die fighting Jason2 or he and Amanda2 will ride off into the sunset together.
Love this comment. I'm rooting HARD for some chaos the next 2 episodes and what you just described sounds exactly like that haha. As Jimmi Simpson stans, I can only hope we're right about OG Ryan making an epic comeback
