I love this. So many minimalist say that you will never think about it again once it’s decluttered and for me that is definitely not true. I do feel a little bit of sadness when I am suddenly reminded of something I have decluttered. I remind myself that I can’t keep everything and I don’t feel wrong for decluttering it, but there is still a little bit of grief to deal with. You are right though that most often I am not really missing the object, but rather the way it made me feel- cozy, loved by the people I used it with, etc. Another terrific video! Thanks!
You're right that so many people have a hard time dealing with those memories behind things and letting them go. I tend to think about it in a way that nothing really is meant to last long except what matters to our memory of it, so letting go just becomes second nature now.
Elin, you're so right. I want to add sometimes walking away is the right action, when you're getting overwhelmed and a decision has become agonizing.
How funny! I have this same dream too, every few months! The recent one was I had my childhood furniture and all of my Mom's keepsakes in the room too, and I was trying to rent a uHaul at the last minute. In another dream, I found an opening to a (really nice) secret closet where I could store my clothes. In another version, I had to get special permission to leave all my things in the dorm room and come all the way back in the fall to retrieve them, even though there would already be girls trying to move in. A common theme is I don't have anyone to help me lift the heavy things. I'm so glad you shared this!
I really love the zooming out & looking at the bigger picture concept, thanks for sharing Aline I'll definitely try this when I next go through my belongings 👍😊
Thanks for the reminder to look at the bigger picture :) I love your work and I am a long term subscriber!
At first I wasn't sure if you made up this reoccuring dream, but you added some subtle details and people in the comments say they dream similar things, so I guess you told a true story. Please keep it real, we love you because you are the way you are!
I have never dreamed about packing or decluttering and I find it very interesting that it seems to be a common topic in dreams. There are a lot of layers to unpack here: The theme of overwhelm, missing help from partners, being tied to this huge task of packing / tidying / decluttering, responsibility ...
I want to add a comment about the thumbnail of this video: The red bars on the top and the bottom are somewhat misleading. When the video appeared in my recommendations it looked like I had already watched it (and the video above yours as well). At first I thought there was something wrong with RUclips and it took a while before I realized the bars belong to the thumbnail. They really stood out.
Oh my god, I regularly have a very similar dream. I'm usually in a hotel room and have to leave quickly but everything is full of stuff and I only have two or three small bags and when I pull stuff out it get's more and more. Things from my childhood and from my kids when they where little and it never ends. And I'm always very angry at my husband, that he doesn't help me. It's so weird
Amen!! Funny I had a dream last night about going through my parents house and saying I’m not doing this to my kids!❤
Great point and video!
Great video!
Thank you for sharing your recurring dream. It sounds very familiar to me. 😢❤
I saw on a video a while back (and I am sorry but I cannot remember which channel it was from) where the suggestion was made to take a photo of the item if the fear of forgetting the item was great. I have done this and it takes the stress off. I also find myself from time to time, deleting some of the photos because I am really it was my fear speaking not my need for the item.
This is so me in some ways! I do associate events with clothing. I still remember the little red polka dot dress when I was a girl and the event around it…
I heard the Minimalists say if we keep everything that has a memory attached, we'll keep everything. Are we willing to let some memories go? We don't have to keep every memory. We aren't supposed to.
I've heard we really never get rid of memories, the mental ones. Anything can trigger them. A common one is a song we associate with a place, former lover, special occasion. We could donate or delete the physical, the mental parts live on even when buried. We can cope nonetheless.
❤❤❤
I have a sweatshirt from about 30 yrs ago, had a pic of me and my son as a baby transferred to it. I gave it to my mom and she recently gave it back to me. The pic is somewhat faded but I can’t let go. 😢
I would've kept the gray velour top.
