Team 🐸 here! It’s not a ton of knitting, and you’re a much more experienced knitter now, so redoing it will go quickly and I think you’ll be much happier with the result. As I recall that’s a two skein shawl. I would start over with your second skein - in the long run you might not even need the yarn that you’ve already knitted up.
Was about to say the same thing…..I would start the same pattern with the second skein. When you finish that and you are confident you have the pattern sussed, break the yarn of the existing piece, use up the unused yarn. If you find you still need the already worked yarn, that’s the time to unravel and steam the yarn, and finish the project. PS start using lifelines
Keep going, you don’t wear the spine straight and you can make it your special acceptance of self, not perfect but perfectly you shawl. Just don’t loose the love for it. I agree with you the yarn is fabulous.
Why do people need to make snarky comments! I love watching you talk about knit, talk about acquisitions, talk about things in your life. No need to explain anything about why you aren’t knitting!! I’m here for it all!!!❤
I often say knitting is like life. Sometimes you face a hiccup in life, much like a wonky stitch in a project and you carry on, life will still be beautiful, a lesson was learned. The shawl will still be lovely, it will still keep you warm, it will still jazz up an outfit. I say carry on!
Team 🐸. Then re-cast on right away. The yarn is so beautiful and you have more knitting experience now. My hope is that you will be happier with the finished project with out the little mistake.
The shawl is beautiful. You will do what you feel best about and it will be fine. With that said, I'm team Frog It. If you are enjoying the knitting, you'll just get extra joy from it by doing it again. Otherwise you may think only about the little wiggle in the spine every time you bring that shawl out and it may keep you from wearing it. Experience speaking. Best to you. Love the Toft dogs and everything you do!
I'm on team 🐸 and restart it with your new skills and enthusiasm. I love the yarn choice too and think you will be happier with it. Love the videos and I hope that everything went well with the wedding. Looking forward to seeing your finished TOFT dog and hopefully some more progress on Mark's jumper, when the super-secret test knit is complete. Happy crafting
I vote 🐸. The mistake will bother you later, you’re not too far along, and your gauge has probably changed in 5 years, so it’ll be the Flax sweater all over again.
Hello 👋🏻😊 plants are beautiful but they are never perfect and never symmetrical... And still they are wonderful, fantastic and perfect in their inperfectness 😍🐸✨🌿
I would frog it and start again. Your knitting skills are soo much better and you will get it done again really quickly. If you leave it you will look at it and say oh it’s got a mistake and never wear it. Hope the wedding was awesome. Mark’s cakes look brilliant. Look forward to hearing what you decide. Melissa
Like an uncontrolled child at a buffet 😂😂😂 I go to yarn shows with a list and try to stick to it, then turn into the uncontrolled child 🫣. Your shawl looks beautiful and to start again you would still be working with the beautiful yarn. I would say go with what you feel. I have a mistake in my sock project but it’s only noticeable to me and it will be on my foot!
Hope you had a nice day for the wedding in this junuary. Those welshcakes look so good! I love how you keep a secret testknit an actual secret in terms of not showing it at all! Team frog it for the shawl. It is in a very visible spot and the energy given off by you for living with it is not convincing me you think the whoopsiewhateverhappenedhereisfine is actually fine.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold - it's usually gorgeous.... It's really a personal thing about an error, sometimes you CAN drop down & fix it, but redoing twisted stitches isn't easy, plus you need to add a stitch to every row because you missed one increase. Can you run a thread through the stitches below the ooops? Kinda like a lifeline? Honestly, it doesn't hurt to start over either, your tension might be completely different than it was them. Yeah, I can't decide either. The yarn is GORGEOUS!!
Mark is like my husband,he is the voice of reason, he knows you best… the yarn is amazing you should rip back and start again, you won’t love it if you carry on. Marks Welsh cakes look amazing how wonderful and kind of him to make them. The wedding looked amazing…….are you doing the octopus CAL….I’m on the fence, I love him but I need to buy the kit x.
At first I thought nah leave it and carry on, then I remembered my Dotted Rays shawl that I had done the same thing. I carried on and even though no one can see, I regret not fixing it. Rip it back and start over. Love the yarn. I have my raffle tickets, hopeful!
Hi Martyn, how dare anyone pick on our Martyn! You are so kind and so generous. Crafting is a hobby and if you choose to do a super secret test knit you do it! Can't wait to see and hear what it is. For the Herbivore shawl. A couple of years ago I would have said just continue, it's a small error nobody will notice if you don't tell them, but I honestly think it would bother you and it's much to nice a yarn to languish in a draw not used. Start it again. I know what you mean about older girls not wanting cute. But in black with pink or green lashes would be perfect. Having four granddaughters aged 10-12, all different, getting it right is important, but so difficult at the same time! Just had a message from the ten year old telling us how much she is missing us. She's up Newcastle way so not been since early the year. If you are ever stuck and I can help feel free to shout, re toft. Hope the wedding was fun and you fulfilled your duties as best man. xxJane 🐑🌼
Martyn, if you are waffling already about the shawl with a flaw, I would rip it out and start again. I find when I ignore that waffle feeling, it does not go away and I end up not having joy in the project, but you do you! 💕
Hello Martyn! I agree life does get in the way but as you say, it will all get done. Regarding the Herbivore Shawl - I would frog it. I’ve frogged sweaters. And recently, I have frogged a WIP that’s three years old to start it again. It won’t take you that long to get to back to that point. Love seeing you each week. These videos bring a light to the day. Best.
Martyn, just leave the flaw. It is not so bad, you know. And it gives your shawl character. It is a beautiful shawl even though it has this tiny little flaw.
Frog it! If you were okay with carrying on (which would be fine) you would have done so by now and it wouldn't be worrying you. Start over and it will never bother you again. Love watching you and all you are up to.
That was what I was going to say too. The fact that you are dilemmaing so much over it means you wouldn't be happy if you don't fix it. It is in the central spine of the shawl so you'll always see it x this is going to be my next Westknits cast on, so maybe we need a KAL before the MKAL 😂
Leave in the imperfection! The beauty of the yarn will distract the attention away from the design feature. You always used to say, there is no knitting police 😉
I quite like the grey yarn with flex of copper. Personnaly I would start again but knowing you I'd say just embrace the mistake and wear it proudly !!! Have a good time at the wedding !!! 🎉
🐸 Team frog it and start fresh again! after 5 years, you’ll get the excitement of a completely new project 🎉 good luck 🍀… on my way to take look at stephens shawls … mmh, maybe…
I think that you could totally ladder down to fix that shawl. If you're thinking about frogging it, you should try fixing it first - if it doesn't work out, you were going to rip it back anyway. But laddering down is not hard at all - you just knit with the strings that are attached. You would just pull the needles out of a few stitches on either side of that spine & let them drop to the mistake. It won't be hard. It makes you nervous because you've never done it before, but taking the mystery out of it will also take that apprehension out of it as well. Then you'll have a new tool in your knitting kit ❤
Love the shawl- you chose the perfect yarn. Nature doesn’t have many perfectly straight lines, so I say that little wobble looks fine. As long as your tension hasn’t changed over the years since you worked on it, my vote is to keep going. Hope the wedding went well- I’m sure you were the best Best Man and Mark’s Welsh cakes were a hit!
Hi Martyn love your podcast. I would frog the shawl. When this happens to me, I frog it and find that it knits up much faster the second time around. Loved your pictures at your friends wedding.💗
Keep going plants are not perfect and have crocked stems. It would be a shame to frog it. Life is not perfect. Go rouge.❤😅 thanks for being there I appreciate the visit. Even if I live in Florida. Wish I had better access to Toft.
being belgian, I had never heard of welsh cakes. well, I made some this morning and they were very nice, nutritious and such a quick bake! thanks for introducing us to this traditional welsh treat!
This just came up as new, but I want to vote for pics of you both dressed for the wedding. Those cakes are so nice. Makes me want to look up a recipe. I hope the wedding was terrific.
I’m team frog it! Frogging hurts when you’re doing it, but I usually feel better about redoing something but I’m a perfectionist and not fixing it would drive me nuts!
I’d probably restart your shawl with unused yarn and see how it goes, don’t rip out until you need the used yarn. See how you enjoy the project now & wait to make a final decision on the part you have already knit 😊
I agree with Mark start over and let the yarn be glorious rather than carry on and always see the mistake this takes away the glory of the yarn cos the ‘oh but look at the mistake’ will always be there xx
Team 🐸 it! 😁 Cannot wait to see you secret project. I think you are knitting on the Stephen West socks (haha wild guess) . You and Marc should a vlog together about perfection and not perfection. Anyway love the Podcast 🎉
I would crochet a chain up through the central line to correct the ‘wiggly bit’. If not live with it, embrace your knitting journey and the perfection pressure that our society is now putting on us. You cant embrace positivity in other areas if you dont accept imperfections in others, yourself or things you do/have done.
Hi Martyn. If the mistake stopped you from wanting to work on it the I would frog it. No one else may notice it, but you would, and you want to be comfortable wearing it ❤
I continued on with a sweater that had obvious short row increases on the front....I didn't worry and finished the entire body..... couldn't stand the error and ripped the whole thing back to the yoke.....it is still a UFO😂
I would frog the shawl and start it again. Because the error is on the central spine it is more noticeable than if it had happened elsewhere in the pattern. Love the yarn
In US there is a tradition or superstition that you leave an error in a crafted piece to allow the evil spirits to escape it. So often in heirloom pieces you will find a 'error' intentionally left in. However, the perfectionist in me says 'frog it and redo'.
What would Steven do? Try blocking it first, see if you can grab a darning needle and make a mini adjustments (in gold)! You can fix it! AND you already have lots of perfect items. How fun to wear the fixed item and see if anyone sees it. Have a great wedding party!
I think personally I would frog it. I started a project and made an error and like you I put it away, love the yarn so I frog 🐸 it. Good luck with Maurice. I hope the wedding went well. Hugs to you both ❤❤❤
Martyn, I can understand that you want to fix the mistake of the shawl. If you rip it please start again. The yarn is gorgeous and the pattern too. I knitted two of them (one with a fingering yarn and one with an aran yarn) and I absolutely love both,
Welsh cakes- yum- for me the important distinction is that you cook them on the stove top on a griddle and dust them with caster sugar afterwards. I like using crystallised ginger or freshly chopped candied peel (not the soapy pre cut stuff) and sultanas!
If it were me, I would take it out to begin again at the cast on. I could live with somethings but that seems like it’s so early you should not be too long to get to that point again. But maybe wait until you get a few of your other WIPS done before starting again. Maybe use it as your treat after finishing Mark’s jumper. 😉 It will be brilliant! 🎉
I’m not going to be very helpful Martyn with your shawl dilemma but it really is up to you at the end of the day! I can only tell you I made a mistake on a cable twist on a project some time ago myself. I left it in and carried on. However it played on my mind for weeks and in the end I went back and corrected it- and I’m glad I did! Btw those heart welsh cakes look so delicious x
Oh Martyn really a list of reasonableness? Why start now. I look to you to support my I can knit all the projects in 3 months even though they are really 12 months of work. Wink 😉😉😉😉😉❤
Martyn thanks so much for sharing! It is SO hard to make these decisions isn’t it? I think I might frog the shawl and restart…..I have shawls that I have left mistakes and I must say it has affected my enjoyment of the finished shawl (but I still wear it)….I too have WIPS of shawls with mistakes that I can’t quite make myself choose to frog or complete (mostly because I am just far enough along that I can’t bear to restart …..I have enough time already invested ….I can’t figure out how to just fix the 🤬 mistake SO ….it’s a WIP) When trying to decrease my WIPs total I usually try to assemble the pattern, all notions I need, and “the project”. I give myself a bit of time to reacquaint…..then I knit for 30 minutes. If there is no joy involved, etc. my decision has been made…..well that’s assuming there’s no mistakes 🤣
It's also an old tradition to leave a mistake in your knit or crochet work so your soul doesn't get trapped. Cause you leave a bit of your soul in everything you make ❤ and I love that idea. However if I see you talking. Your face get way more excited when you talk about doing it all over then just go ahead. So I feel like you would be happier to start again. I'm.not a perfectionist I trive in chaos. But I had just frogged a huge bit on my project because i made a mistake. And have started again. And I am now way more excited about the project
With the Rusty Birch Yarn Shawl before frogging it could you not try spraying it with water, block that spine section of eyelets & use a large knitting needle to wiggle the stitches apart to make a pseudo eyelet & see if from a distance it kind of fakes it lol ... If that doesn't work then 🐸 it ❤ Susannah
Re the shawl, I couldn't leave it but if I were to rip it back I would ' tink' it back. I know this would be laborious but you'd feel so good once you've fixed it.
I’m technically a perfectionist but I often leave errors in when I’m crafting if I’ve got a way past them, depending on how likely it is to spoil the fit or whatever. As a result, I’ve had things I’ve left errors in and no one has been any wiser and I have enjoyed wearing them regardless, but others where it is more obvious to me I’ve not enjoyed and ended up not wearing and getting rid. So, if it was me that one is a very small error and easily missed so I would probably leave it and carry on. If you feel it would mar the pleasure of wearing it, then frog if you really can’t fix it because we need to enjoy the process and the wearing/ gifting.
Re: your mistake in the shawl. I always ask myself how would I advise someone else who had done it, and go from there. If it were me, I'd pull it out and start again - you'll always know the mistake is there and be conscious of it. :)
I have the Toft quarterly in my basket ready for payday and I'm desperate to make a frog bag but can't decide which colour to do 😅 maybe I'll just have to raid my stash once I've moved 😂 and I totally get the child in a sweetshop feeling at yarn shows too. Also its kintsugi - Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If you feel you still like the shawl and would still like it in that yarn then I would frog and start over, this is why my knitting is so slow, unless I have a lifeline in then I start over. I tried fixing the strawberry lemonade shawl and completely failed so I started over a third time...
If you decide to start over, challenge yourself to ladder down to the spot and see if you can fix it first. If you decide to carry on you will have to make sure your knitting gauge hasn't changed since gaining more experience in knitting.
Hi Martyn, lovely to catch up with your vlog, you could "kintsugi the shawl" (as Mark said) or new word "knitsugi" it, by enhancing the mistake? Maybe with a rust braid or woven crochet chain on the spine?? Look forward to hearing what you decide to do x
Just a guess on your test knit … Stephen West SSAL. You are a prolific sock knitter for sure. I’m knitting the Stephen West Spiral Splash socks now. I loved yours. As far as your shawl with the mistake. No one will notice that except you and Mark. And you will forget it’s there after awhile. But if it will bother you too much, rip it back.
Frog it and skein it back up to come back to later. My thinking is you’ve shown it before with the imperfection and made no progress since so your heart isn’t in it with the mistake. Enjoy your weekend celebrations.
If the shawl has been sitting around for a long time because of a flaw, then clearly the flaw has been enough of a bother not to finish the shawl and will continue to bother you. You are a much more experienced knitter now and can easily get back to where it is at from starting again. Frog it. BUT... Before you frog it, use it as a learning experience once more. Knowing that you have decided to frog it means you can have a practice at dropping down and fixing the problem, knowing full well that it won't matter if you make a mess of it as you are planning on frogging it. Drop down the stitches in the first row and see if you can put them on again as they should be. If you manage that, drop them down again and drop the next row as well. If you manage to pick up both rows correctly, do three rows down. If you've "got it" drop them all down to the mistake and work your way up again. If the tangle gets into a mess you can slip the needles off for the frogging. But you'll be delighted if you figured out how to correct what went wrong and it looks good. Even if you still find the need to frog it due to tension issues causing it not to look good despite getting it back correctly, you'll have improved your toolbox of skills once more.
I think you should rip this project back and reuse the yarn. Your tension will probably have changed it’s always hard to work out where you are in the pattern and if a mistake is visible in a project it will be all you can see every time you look at it. Yarn is lovely though ❤ excited to see the secret project soon.
Hi Martyn. I'm on Team live with it. I've done a triangle shawl with an eyelet spine. It has an error in it and consider it a Persian flaw: nothing human made is perfect or jokingly refer to it as a "design element" that makes my shawl unique to me. Good luck with solving your dilemma.
My opinion: frog it completely and do it again. Because if you go on with the mistake left, you will ever know that there is a mistake. You will never be 100% glad about an imperfect endresult. And the yarn is so pretty, it is worth to become a perfect shawl. And the time you consider about is better used to re-do the project.
Hi both, I've just had a problem like you with my knitting, I just can't leave it and I know I would never wear it with mistakes in so I had to start again with mine. Just think how much a more accomplished knitter you are now so if you did start again you would wiz through it in no time. Best of luck with what ever you decide. Thank you for your video. Sian from Wrexham 😊
Love love love the TedKnits yarn! I'd only frog the shawl if my mistake impacted on stitch count. For who's going to ever notice my mistake? To those very few who do and, bless them, can't stop themselves from pointing it out, I usually reply that the pattern called for it 😅.
Either tink back stitch by stitch or frog back before the mistake in a row where there are NO increases? But thread a lifeline through first. As long as that mistake doesn't upset the stitch count? Just leave it and plough on. Are the Welsh hearts not cooked? Dont put completion time constraints on yourself. Just record when you can. Life gets in the way. We will be still here. ❤
Rip it back is the best thing to do. Use a safety line every 10 rows, that way the furthest you have to frog it is 10 rows. Let me know if you want me to explain how to do it xxx
Team 🐸 here! It’s not a ton of knitting, and you’re a much more experienced knitter now, so redoing it will go quickly and I think you’ll be much happier with the result. Wabi sabi? I would rip out and start over. You would probably feel better, your creations are wonderful!
Or do the Kintsugi?😉 And "ignore" and continue ☺️
Keep going, you don’t wear the spine straight and you can make it your special acceptance of self, not perfect but perfectly you shawl. Just don’t loose the love for it. I agree with you the yarn is fabulous.

There's no need for snarkyness some people if you can't say something nice shut up, we love you Martyn never change xxx
Team Mark/🐸it, Such lovely yarn, which needs to be the star of this shawl, not 'can you spot the mistake'.
I vote 🐸. The mistake will bother you later, you’re not too far along, and your gauge has probably changed in 5 years, so it’ll be the Flax sweater all over again.
Team start over and enjoy the project with new found joy and enthusiasm 😊

No one else may notice it, but you would, and you want to be comfortable wearing it ❤
Hi Martyn, i would frog it.🐸 It is not big, and you can use the yarn for something new and exciting.😊
Done is better than perfect!! Keep it and finishe it!
Frog it immediately. You will be so relieved!
Hugs to you both ❤❤❤
I am team rip it out and start again- the yarn is beautiful and it will be worth it in the end.
The Welsh Cakes look delicious 😊
I’ve never regretted ripping back and doing something over - I can’t say the same about just leaving it - 🤷♀️
I’m not going to be very helpful Martyn with your shawl dilemma but it really is up to you at the end of the day! I can only tell you I made a mistake on a cable twist on a project some time ago myself. I left it in and carried on. However it played on my mind for weeks and in the end I went back and corrected it- and I’m glad I did! Btw those heart welsh cakes look so delicious x
Just start again with the other skein. Will feel much more positive than reusing frogged yarn 😄
Hi Martyn. Marc knows you best, so I say: listen to him and rip it back!
I say live with it! It looks lovely and mark do t worry about what u look like we like to see you on camera!
Oh Martyn really a list of reasonableness? Why start now. I look to you to support my I can knit all the projects in 3 months even though they are really 12 months of work. Wink 😉😉😉😉😉❤
If you don't know, then you know 😊 Frog it and start over and enjoy the full experience of your yarn again 🤩
Small mistakes may be left in place. From the looks of the stitches, this should be re-knit. You will be .much happier with the finished project ❤
I’m with Mark, 🐸.. but I’m also an only child perfectionist 😂
Keep going it’s not a huge error and makes your shawl unique
Forge ahead! This is your knitting journal, journey. Only Mark will know that it is not perfect
Also it would be a fantastic experience to learn how to fix things like this.
Live with it. You can do it.🎉🎉 You can do it rarara sis boom ba.🎉🎉. Iris
Frog it and skein it back up to come back to later. My thinking is you’ve shown it before with the imperfection and made no progress since so your heart isn’t in it with the mistake. Enjoy your weekend celebrations.
Loving your podcast❤️😀regards from Iceland
If it was me I would frog the shawl as I could not cope with the mistake. Mark’s Welsh cakes look yummy. Enjoy the. Wedding.
Team frog it. You've not knitted a lot and you can soon knit that again knowing how lovely it will look. xxx
🐸 once I’ve thought it I know I have to, most times I keep going for a bit and always ask myself why
Team 🐸 and use the yarn for the next westknit mkal.
Rip it back is the best thing to do. Use a safety line every 10 rows, that way the furthest you have to frog it is 10 rows. Let me know if you want me to explain how to do it xxx
