Names.....Weekly Round-Up.....My Week and What I did.......This Week's Chaos....... And did you realize that it was Episode 100? 100 Martyn! That is quite the accomplishment. Pat on the back to you. The Gideon Method is a way to get stuff done. How you do it is up to you. It can be amended. Alternating 2-3 projects is as good as rotating through 5. You still get ahead on those you work on.
I just LOVE the colors of your Hiberknitalong "Glowhair Frost Shawl" by Stephen West. Your spinning is great in just 16 days you got so good !!! You sure can be proud.
Your shawl is lovely Martyn and you’ve certainly made the right decision to not stripe the end but keep it all that gorgeous blue! Your spinning looks really good and that colour is fabulous. I’ve been spinning quite a bit this week too and it’s my happy place to relax and lose myself in the process. You are doing so well x
Dreams vs reality weekly chats (?) Apparently i am obsessed with blankets and now have started 2 new ones this year alone. Crocheted in greens. It has been a cold January so that is how i am justifying all the blankets.
Hi Martyn, the shawl is a stunning piece of art. I'm loving the blend of colours. So bright and happy. Don't be too harsh on yourself. You had a crazy work week, and made some amazing yarn and did a whole section of your shawl. I made five and a half Easter bunnies. Body is in a bad place atm, but it will get easier. I'm just listening and doing what it says and if that's a handful of stitches and stop, so be it. Episode 100, congratulations. xxJane 🐑🌼
Someday, I would like to learn more crochet stitch types. That blanket actually looks cute. Not my colours but I could see it with my colours. Greys and black & white and a pop-electric blue or lime or hot pink/cherry red.
When you say you had three days of doing nothing, you need to change that to I had three evenings of rest after busy work days. Be kind to yourself my lovely. Love seeing everything you have achieved but it would have been just as nice to see you chat and say “I spent this week resting” xx
Hi Martyn, First off, congratulations on your progress in spinning! A lot of spinners with many more hours under their belt make yarn that isn’t all that different, so be very, VERY proud of yourself. I’m also thoroughly chuffed that the fibre is starting to ‘speak’ to you. It means you’re starting to develop a feel for it. A little tip on figuring out how thin your singles need to be: find yourself a commercial yarn that is how you want your end result to be. Pick apart the plies. Remember that when plies are taken apart, some of the twist comes out and you might need to produce singles that look a bit thinner. Also keep a bit of that commercial yarn by your side for reference when you do your ply-back tests. This method isn’t 100% accurate, because depending on the fibre, your yarn will bloom and puff more… or less. But at least you have an indication. To make a fingering weight yarn you’ll need singles a little less than half what you want for a 2-ply. Every spinner, every fibre is different though. Most spinners though, will need singles a few wraps per inch thinner than half of their plied yarn. For a 3-ply, it’ll be a bit less than a third in thickness, etc. Over time, you’ll be able to eyeball it. Just keep having fun. And remember that if a certain fibre didn’t agree with you in the beginning, it doesn’t mean it won’t later. You might just not be ready for it yet. After more or less a year and a half of spinning, there is only one fibre I know I’ll never like when spinning it 100% pure and that’s bamboo. Thoroughly blended in is fine. Pure… nope. Finishing yarn and figuring out how many metres you’ve got: During finishing, your yarn will shrink a little. So either you’re going to have to wrap it around your niddy noddy again, or you’ll have to estimate. I’m usually too lazy to bother with re-wrapping. A guesstimation it is then.
Oh Martyn! Your shawl is just breathtaking!😇I am really excited to see each color as it’s being used…..your fade is gorgeous! Crafting should bring you joy! No apologies necessary! I’m working on socks and cowls getting ready for the Awesomer Gossamer cast on 😉.
My Hiberknitalong is done and drying on the spare bed! Woohoo. (Actually it’s probably already dry but I will check tomorrow.) I love the mohair!!! I am looking forward to packing it this weekend for my trip. I am taking a break today. No knitting. Didn’t knit last night either. Work has been stressful for me too and I’m too tired to do anything but play with my phone. I hope to pick up Kermit the shawl later in the week and take it on my trip. I have to order needles for my Piet Sweater. (They were out of stock at my LYS, but are getting a shipment in later this week.)
Your hiberknitting is absolutely stunning!! I liked the pattern from the start (unlike some others lately) but I'm not so impressed with & can't use mohair!! They way yours looks is perfection!! I actually think I have something in stash or I can use a gorgeous advent I have, its a gradient of 30gr minis... I think it'll work!! I'll just need to change colors more often. I've already broken my promise to not start something new in January, none of my WIPs were calling to me, I tried starting (& frogging, and starting & frogging, lather, rinse, repeat... about 4-5 times) something with a gorgeous boucle I have, nothing made me happy. My godchild's baby was born yesterday (albeit early), so I decided on an emotional support chicken (or 3.... Yes, mass production!!) for him & I'm happy with the decision... I'll get to my languishing WIPs, just not today. 😉 I DID finish my "herbivore", I used almost 3 hanks of yarn, bind-off was about 830+/- stitches & an MKAL stole...so at least I have those to show. I definitely can't say I was unproductive so far this year. 😊
Hi Martin from a very wet and windy North Wales. You’re doing so well with your spinning and progressing so quickly too. You’re a natural. Dare I ask how the niece and nephews jumper and cardigan are coming on. 😂
Maybe if you go ahead and weave in the ends on Mark's jumper you will be more motivated to finish it. All those ends are overwhelming to me. 😊 Just a thought.
I have finished my Glowhair Frost Shawl last week and I want to knit another one right away, it's just so pretty and fun to knit. I really love yours, the colors are so good 😍 Color 4 is just everything, it was already my favorite when you opened the advent and even with just a few rows knit in it so far, I can tell, it's going to be spectacular.
May I ask how many metres/yards are on a ball of Glowhair lace yarn? I saw on the website how many grams per ball, but not the metres or yards. It’s so gorgeous I’m tempted to buy some but not necessarily for the Awesomer Gossamer shawl. Although that pattern is very tempting.
@ - Oooh, wonderful! Now I know how much would be needed for lots of projects. 😍 I love to do ‘home made fades’ with this type of lace yarn, very much like is done in the Awesomer Gossamer shawl. Use 2 or even 3 strands of lace weight together. Example: Start with 3 in the same colour. Break off one strand and add in one in another colour. Keep knitting. Break off another in colour 1, add another in colour 2. Keep knitting. Then replace that last strand of colour 1 with one in colour 2. Keep going and if you want, keep ‘fading’ until you’ve worked your way through 3, 4, 5 colours or more.
Hi: Martin why are you spinning. That’s new. If you put that aside maybe you can make some progress with what you would like to finish and get on with finishing Marks sweater 😊❤
I'm still sticking to the Gideon method, but changing over every Friday, which will be a problem next weekend, I think. My son has a bowling tournament and I usually take a project to his sporting events, but next up on my list is the Satellite Shawl and I'm on the two-color brioche section, which I think requires more attention than I can give it at a tournament. I have a cable blanket square I might be able to manage, or a colorwork Christmas stocking. I'm trying very hard not to start something new. We shall see.
hello martyn, I would say : abandon the gideon-method and go back to your 'basket-method', that was putting about 4-5 priority-projects in your african basket, as long as your are working (mainly) on one of those 4 or 5, it is OK (and if you don't, nobody will shoot you). question : if you are really tired after your day-job, does it make a difference if you work on a colourfull project or on more muted natural-colours-project. for me bright-pink-socks would be more attractive then your grey-brown blanquet. good luck with your spinning!
If your goal is fingering each of your plies will need to be lace weight thickness. Believe me when you get it that thin you feel like your living in the edge in that you get the fiber so very thin you think it’s going to break all the time, but it doesn’t. I’m trying to spin every day along with you and so far so good for me. It has been very fun.
I’m avoiding all news today…. America. So thankful for you posting today!
Me too! I’ll resume being an informed citizen and advocate for a better world tomorrow. Today I am knitting and drinking tea. ❤
Me too!
Me 2!
As an American, apologizing to the world for my country😢
Me Too…. Hope for the Best… all we can do🙏
Mondays with Martyn 😊
You mentioned Mark’s jumper. Yeah! Time to get that done in Finish February. 😂
My next knit is going to be the "emotional support chicken". Much needed during these times in the USA.

Your Hiberknitalong is so gorgeous!! I love your neutral Exploration Station, too. Sometimes we need to be pushed out of our comfort zone.
Your spinning is so good. Love the blue.
And some nights we just need to sit and not craft. It’s all good
Your shawl is lovely Martyn and you’ve certainly made the right decision to not stripe the end but keep it all that gorgeous blue! Your spinning looks really good and that colour is fabulous. Hi Martyn. Love the shawl. Seasonal crafting would be a good name. X
Dreams vs reality weekly chats (?)
Apparently i am obsessed with blankets and now have started 2 new ones this year alone. Crocheted in greens. It has been a cold January so that is how i am justifying all the blankets.
Enjoyed today, I also have watched Downton many times and have it on in the background when knitting/ crafting 😂
Week 3 of January works for me - better than Blue Monday anyway. Thank you for brightening my week :)
All wonderful things. Love love love them. Great work 🎉

❤ the colour fade of your shawl. My colours. Well done on the spinning. Yes the fibre will tell you what it wants to be.
I confess, Martyn! I didn’t stick to my Gideon Method either. I’m doing what I want! (Insert video of pouting toddler stamping her foot here.)
Well done, Martyn! Amazing progress on your spinning, WOW!!!

That blue yarn is your best yet! It is a beautiful blue. It’s coming along.
Oh Martyn! Your shawl is just breathtaking!😇I am really excited to see each color as it’s being used…..your fade is gorgeous! Crafting should bring you joy! No apologies necessary! I’m working on socks and cowls getting ready for the Awesomer Gossamer cast on 😉.
It is 2 pm Monday in my neighborhood and I just smiled for the first time today. You are sunshine.🤩

That Hiberknit along is stunning, when you hold it up it very much looks like a stunning sunrise
How about calling these check-ins? I enjoy them very much. Happy crafting!
Hi Martin from a very wet and windy North Wales. You’re doing so well with your spinning and progressing so quickly too. You’re a natural. Dare I ask how the niece and nephews jumper and cardigan are coming on. 😂
I adore those colours from Gemma's advent it's my perfect palette ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
You could do a reverse fade with the chevrons. To it ends as it began. Blue back to the purple blue to the pinky purple to the peach to the yellow.
Maybe if you go ahead and weave in the ends on Mark's jumper you will be more motivated to finish it.
All those ends are overwhelming to me. 😊
Just a thought.
Loving your spinning journey!! How about Chats with Martyn or something similar

@@eddavanleemputten9232 Sure, no problem at all. The Glowhair lace is 210m/229y per ball according to the label 😀

How about The Cardiff Crafter as a title for the weekly catchup?
Started making the empress jCket from srops design for the 3rd time ...
Weekly episode name idea...Podette? I've heard that from somewhere else but no clue where from?

As a title "Spoiler... it's still January" 😅
Especially next week!
love it
