    Do this with care. I also wouldn't recommend open up your Power supply.
    They have high voltage Capacitor in it that hold up charge for very long time that easily kill a human.

    • @Arcticretro

      Yes, I know :)

      Once, I swapped the fan in my PSU for some quiet fan I had laying around, my computer got SIGNIFICANTLY quieter.
      When it was stock, the damn computer sounded like an server, despite being a regular rejected PC. Once, I even accidentally wired up the new power supply fan incorrectly, and yet the power supply got through a system software update without shutting down!
      Unfortunately, if I want to get an even quieter experience, I'd have to replace the CPU cooler, as it makes about 90% of the remaining noise. The case is also really cheap, so resonance heaven.

    • @imnotbeluga007
      @imnotbeluga007 2 года назад +7

      Also, you can discharge the high voltage capacitors by either powering on the system while unplugged, or shorting the green wire with any of the black ones.

    I have a year old PSU. It is top of the line gold rated. The coil whine from it is so loud lately. Could it be filled with dust? Is it not enuff watts now that I upgraded my GPU?

    • @nithia
      @nithia Год назад

      If you want to check wattage compatibility you can put all of your components into PC Part Picker which will give you a wattage requirement minimum. As a general rule you want an extra 100 to 200 watts over what it tells you. You need a little head room on the wattage.
      Also these days a Gold ratting really does not mean anything as very few PSUs are under Gold. The Gold rating system is just about how efficient they are but not what is actually in them.
      80+ = 80% efficiency at 100% load; 82% at 50% (working) load
      80+ Gold = 87% efficiency at 100% load; 89% at 50% (working) load
      80+ Titanium = 90% efficiency at 100% load; 94% at 50% (working) load
      Now you have to check the PC Cultist PSU tier list. There are some expensive PSUs low on their list and there are some cheap ones high on their list. They sort everything on their list by components used, output options, true efficiency under realistic loads, build quality, and life span. If it is not on their list though it does not mean it is bad just that they have not tested it yet, and if it is an older unit they likely never will. That said if yours is only about a year old it should be on the list.

    What was that clear plastic piece covering about half the fan's intake/exhaust area? I've not seen that feature before.
    Others have mentioned the method for bleeding off stored voltages in an AT/ATX power supply unit: press and hold the power button on the system with the power cord disconnected. The power LED should light briefly, then fade out. The unit should now be safe to work on, but make sure (put a tester or a meter on it).
    Lubricating a fan is different for each fan encountered. If you're in a situation and need to quiet the fan NOW, use of some silicone-based machine oil (like 3-in-1 Silicone) will help. With any oil, use sparingly. Excess oil migrating from the fan will make a mess inside the PSU and cause dust to adhere to it. I'm presuming this is why Tom followed oil with contact cleaner, to remove any excess.
    The best path forward is to replace the fan. Depending on the PSU design, this may not be a simple task. Please bring the work to a qualified technician if you are not sure how to do this work safely. Selection of the new fan should be done AFTER examining the old one to determine correct supply voltages, presence of any "smart" sensors, etc.
