@@jorgehuertas3995 It just doesn’t make sense when he was more than willing to test rare mons like Dratini in FRLG, encounter/item rates be damned (although he never tested Thick Club Marowak so maybe not)
@jorgehuertas3995 Honestly when I played that game emulated I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to hack in pokeathelon points. I genuinely think it just isn't documented very well. So I kinda get where he is coming from.
Jan, I understand that it can be boring to test all the evolutions because of the mechanics, but you don't need to use the mechanics, just hack them in the game. The intention of the tier list was to be a guide to good and bad pokemon for a nuzlocke right?! But not all pokemons are being included in this logic
Atleast for this game I think he's said that because 90% of the game is a cake walk all that really matters is the E4, does he really need to test EVERY POKEMON when he knows half of them are the same?
@@stumpe9662 True the game is a piece of cake, but this tier list is for people who are just starting out in the nuzlocke community, we cannot assume that everyone is pro
@@stumpe9662 What is the point of the tier list then? He started the series saying he wanted to get information on all the Pokemon to have better tier lists and then is just...skipping a ton of Pokemon?
@pokefreakplays he's not skipping "a ton" he's skipping like 10 and the legendaries. I think originally he did want it to be more individual, but he's come to realize that most pokemon are viable and can pretty much do the same thing for 95% of the game. So he changed it to viability on the hardest fights like the E4. He's not going to test a tangela against Lance, it wouldn't make sense. Just lump it in with all the other generic grass types that don't do anything special
I'm with editor on Pokeathalon being kind of fun. but also even if you don't find it that fun like how much time will you actually have to spend playing it in your average nuzlocke? I think Jan is right that getting stones is generally annoying in this game. But I think he's also overblowing it a bit, especially because the nature of the tier list would force him to get way more evolution stones then the average player is likely to get/need.
Jan 2 weeks ago: "I'm going to update my tierlists by testing every single pokemon in a nuzlocke for any parts of the game they might be relevant for, so I can make the best encounter tierlists for these games." Jan now: I'm not getting evolution stones, I'm not getting tms, I'm not testing all the pokemon, I'm not doing a real nuzlocke run-through to test.
I don't understand why he can't just acknowledge that Pokeathlon grinding is an option and just hack in the items from it. You can get all evolution stones that way
Jan: I didn't really bring any counters to Pikachu. Wrestling Commentator: Who's that coming up from behind? BAH GAWD IT'S GLIGAR WITH THE STEEL CHAIR!
Jan will flame me for this but really losing interest in this series at this stage. The point of the series was to test how well each Pokemon performs against crucial fights in vanilla Pokemon games in order to have better tier lists to help new Nuzlockers get into the series. Skipping out on a bunch of Pokemon that players can get in their playthroughs is just not interesting and seemingly goes against the setup for the content.
you can get red’s pikachu to oneshot itself if you have a focus sash Blissey and use softboiled on turn 1, the pikachu will KO itself with volt tackle and you’ll be back at 50% HP
If i can share a thought: Crobat is insane if you play it with U-Turn I mean, for the kimono girl you lead with it and outspeed barely every mon and can pivot easily, and for blue you can lead with it doing 4x damages on exegg and getting free momentum
I mean most people wouldn't bother testing at all they'd just go on vibes. I think Jan is right that it's only really a few fights in HGSS that need rigorous testing
I kind of agree with the sentiment of other people in the comments. The bit during FRLG where we pretend Sevii Islands don't exist was funny bc it ultimately didn't really matter aside from Moltres, which is pretty easy to guess based off vibes alone. Leaving out the stone evos here feels like such an arbitrary restriction. I get that it's hard to rank them bc you can't reasonably judge when a normal player in a nuzlocke would get them, but I think it's pretty safe to assume that they'd acquired them by the time they reach the E4, so basically most of the fights that actually matter. Especially considering the fact that we are looking at trade Evos like Steelix as well, leaving out the stone evos just feels a bit half-assed
Hey PChal, I recommend you keep 84 as the level cap for red, because most of the others on his team are 84 and below it’s just the pikachu that’s 88, and it a very slightly more difficult fight

Safari zone should be catch what you want, and keep the last pokemon you caught. Like in the Bug Catching Contest. No fishing, no abusing the step count
In a casual run it's significantly easier to get evo stones from Pokeathelon and specific trainers calling you than it is to get Game Corner TMs. If you're hacking in the latter why would you not also hack in the former?
I really love these videos of testing Nuzlockes on the vanilla games. But it just reminds me of how so many decisions make no sense, mainly when it comes to the levels of the Pokémon the trainers have, AND the fact that a lot of them aren’t evolved at super high levels. Like some have level 40 Tailow’s or level 35 Magikarp’s and that shit is so beyond frustrating. Why make that decision? The only way I can see that decision making sense is if there’s difficulty settings and that’s on the easy or default difficulty. Which brings me to my next point and something I’ve always wanted in Pokémon games, difficulty settings. And personally I’d want 3, “Default”, “Hard”, and “Hardcore. But aside from the Default Mode, what I’d want to see in them are long explanations. The gist of them is in Hard Mode trainers will have higher lvl Pokémon, if a Pokémon CAN evolve at the lvl the trainer has it at via lvl up evolution, it WILL be evolved. The levels for the other evo’s like stone, happiness, etc will be certain levels with some differences. No using items in trainer battles. Level caps. Etc etc. And Hardcore Mode will have all the same stuff as Hard Mode but with a few more things. Hardcore Mode essentially will enforce HC Nuzlocke Rules with a couple more things as well. I actually have it all detailed in case I ever want to commission a rom hacker to make a Pokémon game like this
I agree with editor to an extent as well as jan the casual use of mechanics like pokeathalon and stuff Is what the average person would do but not to the extent of evolving every stone evo super early just the odd one or 2 some
If I recall correctly (1-2 vids ago), he’d mentioned (responding to YT comments) that he still wanted to preserve the feel of an “average” nuzlocke playthrough,” such that hacking in stuff starts distorting the true viability of mons or pacing of a playthrough (e.g., Iunno, testing Toegtic vs Togekiss at Morty onwards?) I think that’s vague and unhelpful for trying to cut out mons to test, but it’s *a* response. I don’t know how he’s gonna keep doing it like this for BW2 onwards. Also raises questions for DPP and RSE for testing separate versions (though he’s signaled willingness to do that, citing Ruby-Hardmode as the “first” nuzlocke and Jaiden’s Ruby playthrough popularizing them today).
I sort of get Jan because the tedium is ridiculous but just like he doesn't farm berries in emerald he can hack in the stones at the point he can get them and pretend.
Full disclosure: wasn't able to watch the entire video today. I think you're really meant to be underleveled for the Red fight so matching the level of his Pikachu is naturally going to make the fight free. It's meant to be the hardest fight in the series and most casual players would match the levels of gym trainers but not that of Red. Maybe it'd be more fun if the level cap was lower, like 75 or something? At least then you'll actually have to strategize for the final fight of the game. For context: the elite 4 is balanced in that you need to bring 1 team for the entire gauntlet. Why would you allow yourself to make Red so much easier?
Some people do nuzlockes up until Red so yes it can be. Unless you mean it isn’t in the video. In that case, the rematches are effectively the same as the initial E4.
I'm playing through Storm Silver mod after this series.... man if it a rough game. The mod does its best but the base game is alot more flawed then I remember
