“Citizen Kane” Sparks a Hollywood Feud (feat. Jack Black & John Lithgow) - Drunk History

  • Опубликовано: 19 июл 2019
  • Orson Welles’s classic film “Citizen Kane” was inspired by the life of powerful media baron William Randolph Hearst - but Hearst himself wasn’t very happy about its release.
    About Drunk History:
    Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

    Can we dwell on how amazing the production value is in this segment though? The faux period footage of Hearst is superbly done, Lithgow and Jack Black are perfectly cast (and I would argue could have been cast in these roles in Mank), the cinematography is crisp as the dickens and the dynamic theatrical lighting for some of the scene transitions is an excellent imitation of the technique used in Citizen Kane.

    I think an interesting tidbit to add would have been that the studio actually did not green light his first picture. He wanted to make a movie based on the novel "Heart of Darkness" but was denied because the studio was worried about it going over budget. That script eventually got re-written to become Apocalypse Now by the great Stanley Kubric.

    • @misterk7931
      @misterk7931 3 года назад

      False. Assuming you recently saw Mank, that's only half the facts. Mank wrote a version. Welles wrote a version. At the end Wells wrote a final draft which gave so much character to the main character of Kane and made it presentable as a film. The rumor that Welles didn't write a single word was due to Pauline Kale a journalist who had an agenda against Welles and was discredited by almost everyone who had done proper research.

      Quite a disappointment. I've read that director David Fincher went to great lengths to have the look of the movie mimic that of those shot when "Kane" was made (including filming in black and white and adding so-called cigarette burns during the "reel changes"), but from the moment you notice the movie's been shot in the widescreen 2.20 : 1 format that didn't exist when the original "Kane" was made you realize Fincher's enthusiasm for visual authenticity is just a gimmick. The only interesting thing you learn is that Mankiewicz hung out at Hearst's estate, was friends with Hearst's girlfriend, Marion Davies, and that another Hearst friend was MGM head Louis B. Mayer. All the more remarkable that Hearst, Mayer & Co. were unable to buy "Kane" from RKO and destroy it.

    "Rosebud........... Yes Rosebud Frozen Peas. Full of country goodness and green pean-ness. Wait that's terrible. I quit. Oh just a handful for the road. *munch munch*, oh what luck! There's a french fry stuck in my beard. *much munch* oh yeah." - the later works of Orson Wells

    Yep, that's how it was explained to me as a child, more or less 🍸🍹🍷🥤 were involved. Hearst Castle has the MOST beautiful swimming pools and antiques I have ever seen. I absolutely love giraffes, elephants, sloths, and meerkats...Pandas are okay, and have definitely depreciated in my perception. THANKS so much AGAIN for nothing and nobody. 🍾CHEERS🍻
