  • An emotional Dino Parades ( At The Jeff Hanneman Memorial Celebration ) also brought up Hanneman's final performance with Slayer at the 'Big 4′ show in Indio, Calif. "It was typical Jeff," said Parades. "He had been recovering from the flesh-eating virus that had affected his right arm ... Jeff was self-conscious about how his arm had looked and he was wearing a long sleeve shirt and right before he walked onstage, he said, 'FUCK IT!' and tore that sleeve off his shirt. He walked onstage to a thunderous ovation and after he walked onstage, he raised his right arm defiantly and showed the world what he had and that was Jeff."
Founding Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman stepped onstage with his band at this past Saturday's Big 4 concert in Indio, CA, marking the first time he has played with Slayer since last October 2010. In January, Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since. Hanneman surprised the crowd of 50,000 when he walked out onto the stage, unannounced, and played the two-song encore, "South of Heaven" and "Angel of Death."

Backstage in Slayer's dressing room afterwards, Hanneman relaxed on a couch and said, "I'm the happiest man in the world."
Gary Holt, guitarist for Exodus, has been the primary guest guitarist with Slayer since the band started its 2011 touring schedule in February, and will continue in that capacity until Hanneman has completely recovered.
Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman wrote "Angel of Death" after reading books about Nazi physician Josef Mengele while on tour with the band: "I remember stopping someplace where I bought two books on Mengele. I thought, 'This has gotta be some sick shit.' So when it came time to do the record, that stuff was still in my head-that's where the lyrics to 'Angel of Death' came from."
The lyrics detail Mengele's surgical experiments on patients at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Mengele's explorations were conducted on such groups as dwarfs and twins, and included both physical and psychological examinations. Among the tests he performed that are mentioned in "Angel of Death" are experimental surgeries performed without anesthesia, transfusion of blood between twins, the sewing of bodies, isolation endurance, gassing, injections with lethal germs, sex change operations, the removal of organs and limbs, and abacination.
