If you really wanted to get technical maybe he noticed the rental clubs Sayid was using/knows the composition of the material ie graphite or flex compared to stainless steel/titanium with minimal flex found on more expensive clubs giving more greater velocity but less accuracy on Sayid's 5 iron comapred to his target's 7 iron. I don't think you begin to try and hustle a stranger openly without every competitive advantage obtained through daily country club visits im sure he took to this course evidenced by his opening greeting to Sayid.
