- This project was fun, and easy and the final product is beautiful! Build this container for your David Austin rose.
For my birthday, my wife gifted me a new rose, continuing a tradition from the past two years since I developed a passion for David Austin Roses. Not having enough space in the garden bed, I decided a cottage garden-style planter would be ideal. However, I found that ready-made ones online were quite expensive, with the one in the video priced at $120...ouch! Additionally, it was too narrow for my David Austin rose. Undeterred, I resolved to create the perfect container myself. After sketching out my vision and crunching the numbers, this is what I came up with! I always aim to construct things affordably, using minimal tools, and ensuring they are easy to assemble.
Shopping list:
2 redwood fence boards - 3/4" x 5.5" x 6'.
4 redwood bender boards (usually in the garden section) - 0.125" x 3.375". x 96"
1 redwood - 2" x 2" x 8'.
This is an example of a 5gal planter I used on the interior. Like I said, I had one left over from a tree I planted in my yard. My local nursery has them for $6. I would imagine you could get one for free from any local landscape company. You may need to go to one of the active job sites.

Tools you "need":
Miter saw.
Table aaw.
Air nailer.
Staple gun.
Wood glue.
Tape measure.
Pencil.
Cut List:
Redwood bender: 24 x 15"
Redwood fence boards - 4 x 18" & 2 x 19.5"
Redwood 2" x 2": 4 x 17.5" and cut the remaining piece in two equal lengths. Cut these on the table saw (long ways) into four .75' strips.
See the video for the remaining cuts and installation.
****Last thing to note.....if I could do it all over again and I would reduce the width of the planter by one inch all the way around. So, reduce the width of each panel by one inch. This would give a better fit to the planter that I used to hold the actual rose.

Wow your wife is a lucky gal ! Beautiful ! Subscribed !
Nice! Munstead Wood is going to look awesome in the planter. Deep crimson with the dark brown /gray, chefs kiss🧑🍳 😙🤌.
You nailed it......the grey/brown color was chosen because of how good I thought it would look with the Crimson.
Looks really nice! And you chose a great color :)
I thought it would look really good with the dark crimson rose color. Glad you thought so too!
New Sub! I like the planter, but the obelisk is what I'll be building this weekend.....super cool!
LOL....glad you found something you liked! :0)
This could not have come at a perfect time. I have two Austins coming shortly and I was hoping to find two square planters for the front of my home. Maybe I'll see if I can make these, especially for the price!!
Timing is everything! It was a very fun and simple build....wishing you the best!
Just a warning Munstead Wood amazing, beautiful, best fragrance but she’s the thorniest rose ever 😅❤👌
Thank you for the heads up! I have Princess Anne and she's SUPER thorny too!
