The fact that Edward still see Benjamin as his friend in the end is still heartbreaking.
Potato girl and best girl ;))
For Edward, he would've at least made amends with him in the end and tell him that he was wrong, but by this time he realized that it was already too late for him. Ben would've most likely approved of his new path than his old life as a pirate
I literally imagined the ending being Edward and all of his friends eating and singing of their adventures. Then i watched the end as i had beat the game and I've gone sad 'cause everyone's was deceased.
@@harbingerd.8457Do you wish Things Could of been Different for Ben
I have a dejavu here.
For those of you who are Unaware hornigold was a real pirate and he did think of himself more as a privateer than a pirate, for example one night he and his crew got really drunk and threw all their hats over board so the next day he attacked a ship just to steal her crew's hats and nothing else

Yeah.. He doesn't even attack British ship

I find it ironic but beautiful in a way that pirates are the medium of liberty during AC4
They were human beings, and not all of them were insane with syphilis rotted minds. Modern media only scratches the surface of the kind of people they were.
@@perseuslove1335 true
How is it ironic? They were outlaws. Pretty hand in hand with liberty. People need to stop using the word ironic like this.

Ben Hornigold serves as another shadow archetype to Edward: both were privateers who ended up jobless, thus taking for piracy in other to survive and end up joining secret orders due to their ideals.
But Edward, despite being dissappointed with his idealism, never stopped believing on freedom, thus kept moving forward, and being honest about being a pirate. Hornigold never abandoned his privateer mentality and gave up on notions of freedom, seeking order and control, along with being stuck in the past.
So Hornigold is what Edward could have become if he gave up on freedom, but also if he accepted the King's pardon.
I actually enjoyed the fact he kept his mentality as a privateer. It shows that he never strayed too far from the path of righteousness.
@@JabamiLain Hornigold(who is basically the pirate Javier Escuella)was always a torn person, a cynic who desperately wanted to be a romantic. Benjamin would die fighting for what he believed in. He had a lot of passion, but no love. Although he held high hopes for Nassau, but then they all did. When Nassau fell apart, it hit Benjamin harder than anyone of them.
The whole description of wanting freedom and moving forward reminds me so much of Eren Yeager lol
What worst is that he accepted the King’s pardon and became Pirate Hunter which means he hunted down pirates this would have been seen as a betrayal by his friends including Blackbeard and Charles Vane as they were friends and now he’s hunting them down betraying them
@@ethanramos4441 you see it as a betrayal, Ben sees it as a logical thing to do
Ben was my favorite character in the game. I wish there had been more of him and that he and Edward didn't have to end on such bad terms. He was an honorable character even though he went in a different direction.
Indeed. He could have been a noble Assassin in the fight for freedom and liberty, but instead the Templars got to him first after his dream went to shit.
And that direction had him operating a slave galley for Rogers. He was probably more honorable when he was a pirate.
6:49 "they're as rare as an honest king"- Benjamin Hornigold i like that line
Ben Hornigold was right in some way that Edward was going down a selfish path; one of the reasons he stayed loyal to the assassins until his death.

I feel like edward and ben were affected greatly by the death of blackbeard. They were all good friends. But seeing how and why blackbeard died. Edwards eyes were slowly open. This is what his original mindset is bringing to his friends. While ben saw him dying as a sign that he was unreasonable. So by forming order with the templars he can truly bring about the idea he blackbeard and kenway stood for
No. Charles Vane was the one whom got affected a lot by the retirement and death of Blackbeard.
Hornigold on the other hand, was basically Edward Kenway... Chasing something (Orders and Authority) that eventually blinded him. He also definitely was brainwashed by the templars.
@@pedrojuan8050 And Ben doesn't hesitate on call Edward out on his hypocrisy, mainly on judging him for his choices for bringing them ruin, but do the same thing himself.
I Don't Blame Ben for turning into a turncoat The Time For Piracy Was Coming to an end It Was either pardon or The Gallows
Ben actually betrayed the pirates before blackbeard died hence how the blockade around Nassau happened
I feel like Benjamin isn't mentioned as often when "Best AC IV: BF Characters" discussions occur. Sure he wasn't as memorable as Thatch, Mary, or Stede, but he was still a good character with good motives, even if he could be cruel at sometimes. RIP Hornigold :(
I mean in a lot of ways his story parallels Edward's but opposite. Whereas Edward went from one of the leaders of Nassau and a well respected to pirate to become an Assassin, Ben went from a pirate to a templar
@@strangething7379 edward it's not killer
it's assassin
This is probably unpopular opinion but Mary's character sucked we spent some time with her at the beginning then the reveal happened then we don't see her much until near the end where she dies. Like they wanted us to care about a character we barely knew much about
I love how charismatic all these characters are, most modern media lacks that.
Their personalities have also influenced my own writing and story telling.
4:42 In the Spanish version, Benjamin actually says ''Good day to you, sir.''
The Golden Age of Piracy was ending and Ben saw that and was looking for change... But Edward was still clinging on to it and soon realized that he had to change also.

Ben Hornigold- betrayer
Edward Thatch- Martyr
Charles vane-captured
Jack Rackham- betrayer
James kidd- Martyr
Steed Bonnet- captured
Edward Kenway- survivor
Vane and Bonnet died.
Rockham wasn't a betrayer. Deposing an unfit captain during the golden age of piracy was the right of the crew. You should look into the real history of these men and his motives are much more clear. Vane was seen as a coward after ordering the crew to retreat. The men didn't like this so they voted Vane out and voted Rackham in as new captain.

I liked Hornigold at first, but then when he made that remark about letting Adewale carry a pistol........... well, my admiration plummeted and vanished entirely when he joined the Templars.
Literally almost everyone was a racist back then. You can't blame him.
Yeah, sad to say Hornigolds views were pretty dominant at that time. People like Thatch and Edward who accepted people like Adewale from the get go were extremely rare. At least they had the gall to address that sort of thing in the game instead of simply ignoring it.
That was probably Hornigold’s first encounter with a black person to be fair.
ehhh, I'd say that's 50/50
I didn’t mind it at all, pretty realistic..especially considering the time period.
4:00 “After you subdue a prize, project authority, demand respect that you could never give yourself, this weaves a spell over soft minds, for your victims must always have in the back of their minds, the uneasy idea that you could snap at any moment, and seam them from prick to stone.”

I love all of the characters in ac4.
They are all amazing. The dialogue and everything. They are all treated like a main character and not a NPC.
8:53
Hornigold be like "FUCKIN' NICE WEATHER, INNIT?!"
I wished we could have spared Hornigold. Say whatever you want regarding him joining the Templars, but he did the right thing. An entire life of piracy, which implies stealing, kidnaping, murdering and geting drunk is no life at all.

Funny Ed stoppard who plays as Benjamin Horningold. Is in a show called Knightfall, he plays as the King Philip who works with the Templars as well. But in season 2, he fights the Templars.
Phillip the Fair, as in the guy who disbanded the Templar Order in France?
Something I love about the good Assassin Creed games. The idea that both these sides are wrong, but are right enough to kill for their ideals. The definition of Chaos and Anarchy versus Order and Tyranny. Kenway is an amazing window into that dichotomy, even if he chooses a side in the end. Someone aligned with neither, but has gotten wrapped up in their power struggles. Though he wishes for the kinds of freedom the Assassins dream of, in practice Nassau was nothing more than a sick, slow death. No path. No order. No ambition except the next drink, meal, and lay. The Templars wished to have what the governments of the world have now. A way to spy on anyone they are connected to at any time of their choosing for whatever reason they make up.
Hornigold saw that anarchy was a fools venture. You can't sustain people on freedom alone. As long as there's one person organizing people into working a plot of land for food, there will be a power imbalance. What Hornigold would have eventually learned is the Templars breed or shackle people to those lands. Tragedy he never got the chance to see it. Another casualty to Extremes with no wisdom of Balance.
I love how Thatch raises his glass to Adé while Ben makes a racist remark. Shows what kind of man he was.
Hornigold looks like an ancestor of Michael from GTA 5.

Good Netflix production about pirates brought me here, but I'm a longtime fan of AC.
Hornigold served as the prototype for Jacob Fry
This guy literally has the word "Horni" in his name 😂😂😂😂😂.
Historically the real Benjamin Hornigold was a true kingsman, until he became desperate. He, amidst the pressures of facilitating the creation of the new pirate republic of Nassau, had remained adamant on his reluctance to plunder and scuttle English ships. Some among his cohorts lacked such reservations, and thus garnered quite the following themselves. Eventually, the potential for profit and wealth overwhelmed his endearment to the crown and he set siege to English merchants and slave traders. Benjamin Hornigold did sign the king's pardon, and he did go on to work as a privateer under Woodes Rogers. His death was due to shipwreck.
The golden age of piracy at this time is a really interesting thing to look into. Privateers turning into pirates, and sailors and merchants feeling disenfranchised under English rule -- under the German king George, none the less. Black Flag obviously dramatizes a lot of this, but it's nonetheless an interesting insight into the lives of those men.
Can't blame ben for what has become of him. If only he had lil more faith in kenway. What would then have happened?
Why Edward didnt know that Kidd is a girl before -_- ?

I liked Hornigold. He had the sense to recognize what a pathetic excuse for civilisation Nassau was, the prudence to call for a pacifist approach when King George II was becoming serious about ending piracy (which historically he succeded with), and in the end chose sides wisely. The so called "pirate republic" was a dark stain and blight on the world, a nest of vice, debauchery, crime, murder and the basest of human existence. While Black Flag has enjoyable gameplay, fighting for Nassau was not pleasurable or fulfilling for me. But I am more for the Templars than Assassins after all. AC Rogue was far superior in sense of noble aspiration to me.
Can't comment on the real one but I don't like Hornigold in AC. Yes he had the sense to move on from Nassau, but he was one of the few leaders of the pirate community there and it's totally fair to argue that the failure of Nassau was his personal failure to be a real leader or nation-builder.
I think one thing to compare it to is when Kenway takes Great Inagua as his personal hideout. He can (and does) build it up with infrastructure by investing his personal wealth into it, that's the foundation of nation-building and it's needed to build a thriving community. If a place like Nassau was to thrive then the pirates (especially it's leaders like Hornigold, Thatch and Vane) should have been investing some of their takings into building up the shanty town with real housing, shops, and also hiring doctors and workers and starting plantations to generate passive resources for wealth instead of relying on just piracy. In the end, Nassau's failure in the story is in large part because of him and it's kind of petty that he blames or preaches to Edward on his deathbed when his mistakes with Nassau and his betrayal of his friends overshadow Edwards choices by a large margin.
@@Shinobi_Fox What Edward built in Great Inagua was a smidge above a thieves den, brothels and gambling. Hardly a successful long-term venture himself.
The nature of Nassau is what prevented investment from being of any use. It was an idea of an anarchic "free" society run by pirates. It would never be capable of retaining the elements of a functioning community. That's what Hornigold understood and Kenway didn't.
