How South Africa Could Host Formula 1

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- This videos analyses why South Africa is a prime candidate for hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix due to its strong interest in the sport, demonstrated through high viewership comparable to the United States and the United Kingdom. The country has a proven track record of successfully organizing major international sporting events, such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which boosted tourism and positively impacted the economy. Although South Africa currently lacks a FIA Grade 1 circuit, upgrading the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit or creating a street circuit in Cape Town are viable options. Despite financial and socioeconomic challenges, hosting F1 could offer long-term economic benefits, leveraging South Africa's existing infrastructure and popularity of the sport. South Africans would love to watch Lewis Hamilton vs. Max Verstappen as they bid to maintain their F1 strangleholds. This comes as the world anticipates the #F1Movie #F1

Kayalami has so much history a beautiful track legends raced in kayalami i think if f1 comes in sa it has to be kayalami
thats the thing. while a cape town race would be stunning & as iconic and picturesque as say monaco, kayalami is the historic heart of motor racing in SA
Or the track could be phakisa race track. But, could also be kyalami.
Unfortunately kayalami road was turned into warehouses and office blocks… no more race track there.
So I was relatively privy to the process of F1 returning to SA as a potential media partner.
Converting Kyalami to a Grade 1 listed track would have actually cost closer to R30mil. There isn't too much needed in order to upgrade the track, but upgrades would've taken at least 9 months to complete. In that period, Kyalami hosted the 9 Hour endurance race and a few other local events like Festival of Motoring. The track upgrades would've meant the cancelation of these events, which would've costed the track a lot of money.
The second issue was funding. Motorsport South Africa (MSA) couldn't secure all the funding needed to make this happen. MSA, which is headed up by the son of Jody Sheckter, couldn't get the funding in time, even with Patrice Motsepe willing to sponsor a portion of the funds needed.
Lastly, and most controversialy, FIA did not like the SA had aligned with Russia when the war broke out. Rather hypocritical of them as there were other countries who host F1 races that were also aligned with Russia yet no action were taken against them.
This is a really great video man, you deserve so many more views! 🙌 Keep it up!
30 mill is literally nothing as to how much money can made in the long run let alone the short run for the economy lol that's crazy. Iv been in a few meetings where a few middle men had designs to another track in Cape Town. Way after that first proposal that was made to Bernie. Seemed to be solid but without funding...
I’m South African and I love f1 so this is exciting
I so agree... F1 NEEDS to come to South Africa!!!
Gayton McKenzie such events are economically to our country, help SA to get added in the F1 calendar. Red Bull racing can also help you to achieving car spinning.
F1 in South Africa would literaly be one of our top 10 moments , think of all the economic advantages and cultural
The deal was 99% done for Kyalami this year. Spa was going to get pushed off the schedule.
But F1 pulled the deal when our Govt aligned with Russia in the Ukraine war
LOL Kylami/ Spa... no competition. Might as well say India/ Silverstone!
I think pushing Vegas or Miami off would be better. The Americans only need one race there tbh.
@@PuppyL07 Miami isn't the best track so yeah
From a fellow RUclipsr from South Africa, wow! This video was so on point. The transitions perfect, the script absolutely spot on and the music mixing my gosh!!! Well done man, I think that Cape town street race would be dope, went to the Formula E race there it was INCREDIBLE... keep up this amazing work!
this can also be applied to the rest of the continent as well, south africa is quite literally the reference point in to how we can attract certainsports and entertainment events in any ocuntry in africa if we have modern infrastrucutre and stable currency it would be cool to have like a F1 africa only calendar from south africa, morocco zimbabwe egypt senegal angola kenya tracks. I genuinely believe we can do this in the next 5-10 years
Incredible video production here, love it!
It's awesome to see such quality content coming out from south africa. Kudos to the whole team for the quality video 😮
I agree 👍
Hosting motoGP will be more realistic. We have a MotoGP rider
I personally would love to see South Africa back on a Formula 1 Grit
Did u watch the formula e it made so much money
Bring it to Kayalami 😎👌💪
Such a great detailed video 👏
kyalami came very close to making this a reality.
R100M to upgrade it is not much. The Gauteng government alone can afford that. So if they really want it they should make the facility ready.
The Cape Town Grand Prix South Africa bid company has a great circuit idea that goes through the Cape Town stadium
That sounds beautiful
One day this will be a reality, hopefully while Lewis is still on the grid
I thi k i speak for every f1 fan when I say, we don't want a street circuit
Okes will get mugged lol
Upgrading Kyalami would be easily done….
I think the biggest blockers would be around load shedding (thankfully none recently) and accommodations close to the race track.
Midrand is quite suburban but an F1 level event is going to require hundreds of hotels in a nearby radius and hopefully be walkable. Unfortunately, Jozi is not kind as a walkable location.
The proposed Cape Town circuit would be slightly different as it would be longer
What a video, keep up the good work
I'm Namibian but best believe I'm gonna watch a SA Gp live
The barrier is political, not financial.
I loved this video. The top drivers in the sport (Verstappen and Hamilton) have expressed their interests in racing at Kyalami. In 2022 we were reportedly close to signing a deal with government willing to give financial backing, however one of the private funders asked for an increase in their cut of the profits, hence why we didn't make it onto the 2023 calendar. Let's see what the future holds.
Just a dream… we have had many opportunities yet we always fell short. FIA likes to deal with people who can commit to a 4/5 year signing. They cannot entertain one offs anymore. This would be a big ask for us to step up and be able to maintain the deal.
Guy demonstrates the hunger from South Africans as viewer but proceeds to explain the rules to locals. But great work feel we needed someone to break this down to us. Already forwarded it to 3 chats!!
Formula1 in SA (Mzansi) would be a great spectacle indeed. Great video.
Great video quality and attention to detail
I think your definition on the winner needs to be corrected… 😅
It’s a lapped race, so the winner is the first to complete the predefined target number of laps.
Not “the most laps in the shortest time”
I love your content man please keep it up.❤️
Great video there Boet
I think with the amount of interest to have F1 in Africa, even outsiders can assist South Africa to upgrade Khayalami to level 1. Companies like Netflix are invested in Africa and with their Drive to survive documentary, and I believe they would love to be part of the journey to Africa. This could be a big spectacular tournament that happens every 5 years since the logistics to South Africa can be a bit costly.
Cape Town is an excellent venue for the sport because of its tourism attraction globerly and have proven to be capable of hosting a global racing event, but what if Kyalami is upgraded to the F1 standards...can you imagine the change and tourism job opportunities this will create? This way everyone benefits.
Good video but you skipped over the financial cost of hosting the event. Kyalami would have to pay FIA or Liberty Media just to bid, then reserve a spot on the calendar, and finally to host the event. Additionally, we would need to increase the grandstand capacity to meet the minimum number of attendance (ranges from 100,000 to 150,000). For context: our biggest sports arena only takes a 90,000 audience. The idea of having F1 was quickly shelved after FIA released their financial requirements. Hosting F1 might just be worse than hosting the Olympics.
If they ever do come to SA I'm only going for Nikola Tsolov
I said what I said
Ag pleeze, just because it is on Lewis’s and Grayton’s wishlist make it no more likely than South Africa obtaining a nuclear powered carrier with full complement of cutting edge planes😂😂😂😂😂
The country basically has to spend money in order to make money. What we need is foreign money to circulate the country 💰 word of mouth makes the country grow
Ill make it happen ❤
Preach brother. Lets make this happen
great video
that gp will be an african gp so a lot of people even outside of sa but from africa will attend. i am zimbabwe and saving money to go to one of the gp eg china of middle east countries, but would be happy to pour that to sa if it happens soon.
It's perfectly plausible, if little island Jamaica used to host their own motor racing in the past, so why not South Africa.
Bring F1 to Cape Town ❤
Bro even Dana White wants to bring a big UFC fight specifically here, make a video about that. We renovated cities, airports & built the biggest stadiums in Africa for the world cup, so F1 shouldn't be any different. In fact it might help our people to clean up their act and boost their efforts. Plus we are good at making things a big deal and actually fun. The youth loves to follow motorsport & trendy cars. The most wealthiest people on the continent live in Cape Town & Johannesburg so they will be there.
Rwanda might Stage it
@@qwertqwert99999 South Africa already has the grand prix circuits and facilities that meet the requirement in CPT & JHB. As the economic leader of Africa, South Africa has the wealthiest people on the continent who can splash their money in attendance so. It's all about business.
Well done Goodman this was a great video 👏
What platform do you use to edit your videos?
I would like to know too
after effects with some plug-ins
Earned a sub bruv
Our main issue funding. You'll need upwards of R250 million to get it up and running. Find a sponsor we're winning
Would be nice, but I'm sure the FIA will come with many requests and changes. Maybe unaffordable
Who are you and why are your videos so good???
We need to actually start doing what we say like staying Neutral in wars and then maybe we would have nice things.
Gayton will make it happen .
No he won't. The country doesn't have the money.
South africa has a lot of money lmao. Check the ministers' pockets
Brah I actually fucks with ur channel
Well researched.
How much will it cost SA to bring F1 here ?
How will SA make that money + profit back ?
How will the average being benefit from this ?
Cant see it happening anytime soon...its a European heavy series trying for fans in the USA while giving races to oil rich gulf states...Moto GP is more realistic and they have the same owner now
Hey i saw Zwartkops ive raced there
Well documented g.
Morocco have a hire chance of hosting that south africa stop gate keeping they are in talks with F1 Officials but still no date on when that will be
Cape Town would be ideal. SA billionaires could easily privately fund this like those in Vegas. No need for private funds
@ 1:22 its supposed to be "3.05" billion and not 3.5 billion.
They will hit a pothole
Plus loadshedding also😂
Really now. Do you think there are no potholes in UK or America 😂..
But F1 abandoned plans to return to South Africa because of the Countries Political ties with Russia...
So as much as we can hav the Kyalami or the Cape Town street circuit to an FIA grade 1 standard doesn't really matter with these current sanctions.
Never understood why sports always gets involved with politics🤦🏾♂️
F1 requirement should be no more than 67% left turns
good vid
Millions of reasons. All of them dollars.

Who pays for F1 shipping? I understand they use DHL
Then get makes us look like he took us this far ..there has been talks already its coming back
south africa doesn't even have a working postal service lolll ..
yeah. because we have email and couriers. who tf uses a postal service in 2024?
@@siyabongamkhonza7287 every other country. Why don’t you join the rest of the world or are you too poor loll.
@@red4666 stop lying. post offices and postal services are outdated everywhere. Literally no one uses those other than senior citizens, we're not in 1972 buddy, keep up.
Lol 1980's called, they want you back 🤣
Why would you still have a postal service ??! Nobody writes letters. Email, text and things couriered straight to your doorstep now. Just say the postal service and you should have adjusted to new ways
Click bait
Forget about F1 in south Africa as long as we have the black man leading us with crook minds
The crook minds hosted the soccer, rugby and cricket world cup.
What is this racist comment what are you??
@@l.bmthethwa1598 it ain't racist it's a fact if you know the history of SA you wouldn't say what you said
Clearly you where not around during the 2010 World Cup, a event 5 times more of a challenge than a F1 racing event. The world cup was a success you just need to fix your mentality think negative get negative results, you get what you ask for.
@@BloqBoyG stop talking like you even exprienced it
What is an Anel view…?

1. It's the most elite gatekept morotsport know to man.
2. Certain province will want to host the race even though they're street track is trash.
1. Yes, and? The sport can't suddenly become poorer just to suit a particular continent. If it does, it won't exist. Even if we get a race, 99.99% of South Africans won't be able to afford it.
2. Everyone knows it should be at Kyalami, the only proper race track in SA. And the Western Cape will obviously be a better host, but they don't have a track so it doesn't matter. Their street track was made for Formula E, it will not work for F1.
@@Ho3n3r Didn't say anything about tickets. As that's blatantly obvious. They sport horrible even if you want to compete. It's not welcoming...
Have you seen Tennis?
@@Timothymukansi Really? Explain...
ANC asked that Formula 1 be removed from SA / Kyalami, the Kyalami race track would need to many upgrades, it also has been turned into a business park! SA is also very crime riddled, Midrand of the highest crime areas!
😂can a corrupt government person build a racetrack for south Africa...
Well, it hasn't stopped some other countries.
We already have Kyalami.
Firstly, they already have a racetrack. Secondly, if you want to talk about corruption or crime take a look at Brazil and Mexico😂😂. South Africa built five stadiums and redeveloped five more to host the biggest tournament in sports, this is child's play.
@@goldenagelifestyle7121 My point exactly
Please 😢is beg
Maybe SA government want 30% cut from proceeds...
But BBBBBBEEEEEE requires 49% or more
No way in Cape Town where they want to be their own non-Black country, either in Kayalami or by FNB stadium. Sir Lewis should know better than to suggest CPT, especially after his own racial challenges in his former years and somewhat now experiences.
You need to rise above the bull and recognise stuff that's just impossible. CT is an African city and there's no way you could exclude a race there even if you cried. CT is also a big tourist destination, so it makes perfect sense to optimise it through F1 marketing
@@smanqele I'm just stating facts. CT is not the only destination and F1 marketing can be optimized anywhere in the country. Sounds more like you the one crying for acceptance
@@mulalojuniornephawe9469 I don't think you understand the F1 marketing machinery quite well. Those guys want to maximise, not optimise. Kyalami and Soweto (FNB) would be compromise for them. They don't do those. They would rather carve a track overlooking the Vic falls in Zim for maximum spectacle and marketability. They are not begging for anything, and we better take CT if that's what they prefer or start your own racing calendar in your preferred place if you feel so sentimental about it. We can't toyi-toyi our way into this one like salary adjustment demands! Their rules or go home
Politics got into the way of F1 coming to South Africa. All because South Africa is associated with Russia and because Russia is a war.
I still stand with Russia though 🇷🇺❤️

Wait till Lewis retires.

@@SC0SHI Not crying Im a LH fan.
Not going to happen.... We don't have the money.... as Julius Malema says
We do, and ultimately the revenue would bring us more money than it would cost.
The owner of kyalami himself has said that he would personally have it upgraded to the standard needed for F1.
on our pot hole ridden roads mwahahaha, sure bring it on F1
I dont want F1 to come to South Africa and it won't be a good thing.... I'm South African and I dont want it to come here
