I would like to request more "beginning to end" concept videos that show the whole process. Thanks for the great videos.
Aw, thanks for asking. Perhaps your herb videos where you grow, process, and make teas, tinctures, salves, and home cleansers? I've used essential oils (store-bought) aromatically and in aquatherapy for a while, but I'm more skittish when it comes to more "complicated" applications. I like the idea of having herbs and oils on hand for first-aid (aloe, hello!) and cleaning. I know it's hard to capture using these things for injuries/illnesses. Really, anything on the topic you'll do I'm sure we all will find informative and enjoyable. :)
For some reason, I am only just now seeing this comment, seems I do not always get notifications from youtube! I have been working on putting out more herb videos and will doing some tea ones soon. I also will be working on a video this week on how to infuse oils for making salves or whatever. Hoping to do more tinctures as well as I harvest more herbs to make such. :)

You are really nice person. I admire what you're doing. I'm trying to get back more and more of my roots. My parents were great they taught me a lot of life. Going fishing in Long Island NY oceans. Grew whatever they could everything homemade.. A forgotten great life. My kitchen is my dream. It's full of herbs. Thank you so much Heidi for showing all your harvesting drying videos. For several years I've made tinctures from herbs that I had to buy. But we retired from the rat race moved to Missouri and are building our little village homestead and now I can make tinctures from my plants that I grow from my own garden. Thank you for your example. I'm inspired by your daily harvesting and drying protocol. I now feel cheated if the dehydrator is not full of stuff and doing its job for even just a few hours. Thank you so much.
I know what you mean about feeling cheated, I am the same way about the dehydrator, or I feel bad if I have to miss a day because I simply did not have the time

I like your reasoning. Clearing space for new things to grow. It's nice to see things get big, but also nice to see new plants spring up and have the cycle of life begin anew. Those are nice peaches.

When growing stone fruit you want to pull off most. Fruit should be at least 4" apart on same stem. When fruit first develops start removing. You will get larger healthier fruit. Regarding taste, might want to test soil for minerals. Azomite is a great and easy re-mineralized, $14 for 40lbs where I live. Love you vlog

I'm so surprised at how I can use my catnip mint, up until now my cat was the main one who enjoyed it,haha. And the golden oregano I have it in my greenhouse as a decorative plant, I'll use it more often and dry it too. Thanks again Heidi , God bless you and your family 💞🙏👼💖
A lot of people get golden oregano for an ornamental and I LOVE the color, but yes, it is so fragrant and delicious! I just used some today in my homemade spaghetti sauce :D
I don't have a video on tea, I have never actually had it as a tea, only a tincture or fresh. One day though, I will need to try it as a tea and see what I think :)
I used all ariel parts, stems, flowers, leaves. I cannot remember if the roots are used but since it is a mint, I am sure they can be used as well. I will point out though that this video is old and I was FINALLY able to pin point the differences of catnip and catmint though I had been trying to figure it out for years. Hi Heidi, I know this is an old video, but I’ve been wanting to mention that when I did more research on catnip, all the articles explaining the difference of catnip and catmint say that catnip has white flowers and catmint has the blue flowers. I bought the catnip but now want to get the catmint, (according to all I’ve seen), like you’re using.
Yes, I found similar information but it is very difficult to find that information and most places, even nurseries and places selling seed, I have found catnip with purple flowers. So it can be very confusing. Either way though, the benefits are very, very similar. Whatever it is that I have works well for stress and anxiety

I'm definitely gonna try the catnip alone because you're sooo right...that catnip & feverfew combo is not a pleasing flavor 😝😫🤢 lol. Heidi I love following you around for your "This and That's"! I have mallow naturally growing, but I am wondering how you start the marshmallow plants. Did you plant seeds?
I did actually start all of mine from seed. The first year, I tried to direct seed and they did nothing so the next year I tried it, I planted them in small pots in the green house and then moved them into the garden once they got big enough
If you want those flavors, sure, but I keep stronger tasting herbs out of my mixed greens because they go in every meal I make and I do not want lemon balm or catnip in there. I do use sage a lot in quite a few of my meals but not all. So those things I dry up separately. Catnip is used in my pain relief formula

Hi Heidi, I see you use the herb catnip. I wonder if you can use the flower cat mint? I have a lovely plant of that! Cat mint is an English flower. They are in bloom now so maybe I should pick it to dry.

I started some from seed a few years ago and kept 2 plants that got pretty large. They have a mild lemon flavor I was thinking it would be good in your headache tincture.
Heidi, I am really getting into growing comfrey this year. I've seen several videos where planting comfrey @ the base of fruit trees greatly increases fruit yield & taste. It is a 'mining' plant' (I forget the technical term). It's roots reach down 6 - 10 ft. & pulls minerals up that normally aren't in the top layers of soil. Another reason I'm interested in it is, it makes great healing poultices, etc. If you did make tea from the Catnip, would you use fresh or dried leaves?
I do have comfrey and knew of its benefits for skin and bone healing. I did not know about it being good for around fruit trees so I am going to have to move it under my peach tree! Thanks Ellen!
It seems most gardeners use comfrey for making comfrey (compost) tea & the chop & drop method. I planted one plant last year, but this year, I planted 11 from root cuttings & a lot from seed. When I find something new that has so many benefits, I tend to get carried away.
I have a huge catnip plant that I started from seed last year and over wintered in the greenhouse. I have been hesitant to plant it out in the herb garden because of it being a mint and was afraid it would take over. So, if I do like you and harvest around the edges, that will keep it under control??? Will that also work for peppermint? I have had to repot my peppermint twice since I started it last year because it got so big it outgrew the pots, it would be great to be able to plant them both out in the herb garden.
Mine has spread all over so I'm digging it up and putting it in pots just like I do with mint. I wouldn't be without it though, because the pollinators love it.
I have not seen this spread the same way other mints do, however, it will get bigger every year. So far, I do not mind the size it is now but when it gets too big, I will just do what I do with my oregano and other mints and just dig up what I do not want. I find it easier to keep up on than grass in the garden and especially better than buttercup and choke weed - those things are horrible and have no benefit! At least your mints help keep pests down, that is why I let them grow in my gardens
Your garden looks great. I have a question. I followed your fermenting video and my jars are looking narly. No mold but white and cloudy with white all over the bottom. Are these safe or do I toss em?
That is normal, the white at the bottom is the "mother" like you would get in homemade vinegar and they often turn a bit cloudy. The question is, are they bubbly?
Are they scented like lemon balm or mint or nettles? I know what is mint but don't know what others really look like. I saw these plants in books or images in d internet but don't know in real.

I would love to grow cat-nip. Since I have 5 cat, but unfortunately my cat Cleo is very allergic to it. I can't have it in the house. She is the only cat I ever known to be allergic to cat-nip.

As far as herbs I grow, I buy starts either locally or grow from seed I get from Baker Creek. Herbs I do not already grow I buy from either Amazon (there should be some links in the description box for either Starwest or Frontier brands), or I get from Mountain Rose Herbs. I make my own tinctures from those. There are two different types of kefir, milk, and water. I am just getting back into those but just like with kombucha and the scoby, you have to obtain the grains from someone else. Once you have them and get them going, you can make your own kefir again and again. I have made the cheese before with the milk kefir and will be doing that again soon :D

I used all ariel parts, stems, flowers, leaves. I cannot remember if the roots are used but since it is a mint, I am sure they can be used as well. I will point out though that this video is old and I was FINALLY able to pin point the differences of catnip and catmint though I had been trying to figure it out for years. Hi Heidi, I know this is an old video, but I’ve been wanting to mention that when I did more research on catnip,
all the articles explaining the difference of catnip and catmint say that catnip has white flowers and
catmint has the blue flowers.
I bought the catnip but now want to get the catmint, (according to all I’ve seen), like you’re using.
Yes, I found similar information but it is very difficult to find that information and most places, even nurseries and places selling seed, I have found catnip with purple flowers. So it can be very confusing. Either way though, the benefits are very, very similar. Whatever it is that I have works well for stress and anxiety

I did actually start all of mine from seed. The first year, I tried to direct seed and they did nothing so the next year I tried it, I planted them in small pots in the green house and then moved them into the garden once they got big enough
I also bought calendula seeds yesterday after seeing your videos.

If you want those flavors, sure, but I keep stronger tasting herbs out of my mixed greens because they go in every meal I make and I do not want lemon balm or catnip in there. I do use sage a lot in quite a few of my meals but not all. So those things I dry up separately. Catnip is used in my pain relief formula

Yes, it is perennial but not invasive the way other mints are. I will get bigger each year but it does not spread.

I started some from seed a few years ago and kept 2 plants that got pretty large. They have a mild lemon flavor I was thinking it would be good in your headache tincture.
Heidi, I am really getting into growing comfrey this year. I've seen several videos where planting comfrey @ the base of fruit trees greatly increases fruit yield & taste. It is a 'mining' plant' (I forget the technical term). It's roots reach down 6 - 10 ft. & pulls minerals up that normally aren't in the top layers of soil. Another reason I'm interested in it is, it makes great healing poultices, etc. If you did make tea from the Catnip, would you use fresh or dried leaves?
I do have comfrey and knew of its benefits for skin and bone healing. I did not know about it being good for around fruit trees so I am going to have to move it under my peach tree! Thanks Ellen!
It seems most gardeners use comfrey for making comfrey (compost) tea & the chop & drop method. I planted one plant last year, but this year, I planted 11 from root cuttings & a lot from seed. When I find something new that has so many benefits, I tend to get carried away.
I have wild catnip that grows around my place here in the country so should I try it or should I get seeds and grow it?
You would be better off digging up some root and transplanting, most plants in the mint family propagate better from root cuttings than they do seed.

I have a huge catnip plant that I started from seed last year and over wintered in the greenhouse. I have been hesitant to plant it out in the herb garden because of it being a mint and was afraid it would take over. So, if I do like you and harvest around the edges, that will keep it under control??? Will that also work for peppermint? I have had to repot my peppermint twice since I started it last year because it got so big it outgrew the pots, it would be great to be able to plant them both out in the herb garden.
Mine has spread all over so I'm digging it up and putting it in pots just like I do with mint. I wouldn't be without it though, because the pollinators love it.
I have not seen this spread the same way other mints do, however, it will get bigger every year. So far, I do not mind the size it is now but when it gets too big, I will just do what I do with my oregano and other mints and just dig up what I do not want. I find it easier to keep up on than grass in the garden and especially better than buttercup and choke weed - those things are horrible and have no benefit! At least your mints help keep pests down, that is why I let them grow in my gardens

Your garden looks great. I have a question. I followed your fermenting video and my jars are looking narly. No mold but white and cloudy with white all over the bottom. Are these safe or do I toss em?
That is normal, the white at the bottom is the "mother" like you would get in homemade vinegar and they often turn a bit cloudy. The question is, are they bubbly?

Are they scented like lemon balm or mint or nettles? I know what is mint but don't know what others really look like. I saw these plants in books or images in d internet but don't know in real.
They do not smell or taste like mint. Kind of hard to describe really.

So Heidi, if I grow catnip is it going to attract cats to my yard? Because I don’t want cats in my yard, I feed the birds and I don’t want them being attacked.
It might but we rarely have issues with cats even though I have several catnip plants.

While they have minor differences, they are practically the same so can have very similar benefits

As far as herbs I grow, I buy starts either locally or grow from seed I get from Baker Creek. Herbs I do not already grow I buy from either Amazon (there should be some links in the description box for either Starwest or Frontier brands), or I get from Mountain Rose Herbs. I make my own tinctures from those.
There are two different types of kefir, milk, and water. I am just getting back into those but just like with kombucha and the scoby, you have to obtain the grains from someone else. Once you have them and get them going, you can make your own kefir again and again. I have made the cheese before with the milk kefir and will be doing that again soon :D
