      There was 2 fights after incativity before this fight, one of them 12 rounds. Why are you all talking about Ali's inactivity? Ali looked not as usual, becase Frazier didn't allow him.

      You'd never believe some critics naively believed that Ali, "The (so-called) Light-Heavyweight Olympic Dancer, a man who sent the once-thought impenetrable Liston crashing to the canvas, at least in their less controversial first encounter, Ali, the ring-scientist, had a GLASS JAW, when, in fact, NOTHING could be further from the truth.
      "Like Frazier, the man could "get spend a long time in the phone both," standing toe to toe, declaring "I AM," taking the hard hits (history will argue almost too well) and simply slug."
      I love Foreman-Lyle for that reason. That is my guilty (not so damned guilty; this is BOXING!) I love Earnie Shavers for that reason. Chuvalo.
      With no irony, (maybe some good old fashioned hyperbole!) in some ways, Ali and Frazier (Foreman; Norton; the Four Kings; Loma -- the latter on a strategy level) are all an evolutionary advance on the human.
      But each man, when needed, has an exceptional ability to engage in close, man to man, brawling -- for so damned long. Few overcome, or ignore, pain so well, despite what we know about Manila.
      As a certified Philadelphia boy, therefore a Frazier mark, ... all I can say is: WOW.

    • @ChuckWCoulter
      @ChuckWCoulter 5 лет назад +17

      Ali, BTW, said something like he learned how to have a pain tolerance... he realized he would need one and refused to let pain get to him -- as much as he could....

    The greatest fight of all time was when Muhammad Ali fought Rocky Balboa on June 16th, 1976 at Madison Square Garden. I had ringside seats that night and I was able to meet Rocky's trainer, Mickey, and Rocky's brother in law, Paulie. Apollo Creed and his wife were sitting right behind me. I remember the fight very well because it was about a month before I was committed to the Pilgrim State Mental Institution.

    You've misinterpretted the reason for Fraziers' hatred of Ali. He felt betrayed by him. He had actually supported him in his Vietnam protest and even helped him out with money, etc. Obviously he needed him for a big money fight - but was a genuinely big hearted guy. During the fight promotion he felt Ali went to far with the "Uncle Tom" type comments. He never forgave him for that.

    "Frasier smelled blood..." "a deep, shearing shot across the stomach..." I love it, David Christian. Frasier is all of us, neglected, disrespected, kicked around, always forced to prove ourselves. No one put a white light on Smokin' Joe. He had to scrap for everything he had, and when he tasted it, he drove forward, climbing uphill. Frasier won Olympic Gold AFTER making the team as an alternate. AFTER breaking his hand in the second-last fight -- only to return stateside and NOT find backers for a pro-career, until the Cloverlay men, loyal locals, stepped in when they saw the medalist working as a church sextant or janitor without enough cash for family Christmas presents. Frasier: our symbolic meatpacking-district-everyman-southpaw. A man who went to Nixon himself to get Ali's license back, just so JF could silence his critics and naysayers and prove he WAS the champion. I love both fighters. Both are extraordinary. Mt. Olympus-pantheon men, perfect opposites in so many ways, but it is great to see Smokin' Joe wobble the GOAT; in the same way, this makes the GOAT's career, proving he had the heart to dig deep, come back, often beat and sometimes survive men like JF, Foreman (no rematch), and Norton.

      Frazier and Ali are imo 2 sides of the same coin, their styles, personalities and beliefs perfectly contrasted eachother, and their quarrels and disagreements with each other were thankfully squashed towards the ends of their lives. Without Frazier I don't think Ali would've reached his level of greatness, and same goes for Frazier, every one of their fights came down to 1 lucky punch, or 1 lucky evasion. Ali ended up besting Frazier, but if luck gave Frazier an extra lucky hook history would remember their score completely differently, and same goes for Foreman imo. Without Frazier losing in 2 rounds to the seemingly unstoppable force which was Foreman, Ali's victory would never have been as impactful as it was in the Rumble. Truly the golden age of boxing, and even though Ali is my favourite, he wouldn't have reached his heights without opponents like Frazier and Foreman.

    What I love so much about Joe is his body work. It's very rare for a heavyweight to throw so many body shots. The reason his famous lead left hook was so effective was because his opponents were so wary of his left hooks to the body that their guards were low to protect their ribs then suddenly the left hook cracks their temple and it's good night. What a fighter, had everything you could look for in a fighter. Ring smart. Tough. Durable. Unpredictable. Sharp. Powerful. Explosive. Unfortunate to be born when he was to be in the era of Ali and foreman, although he made them as good as they were.

    This is the finest breakdown of this fight I have ever seen. I am an Ali fan and a huge fan of this particular fight which in my view showed greatness of both athletes. Frazier was so tough but so was Ali. What a fight ! Look forward to you doing a breakdown of Ali v Foreman. And maybe a "what might have been" of Ali v Tyson.

    Great stuff as always, man! As a historian AND boxing fan, I found this very impressive. When you cover the third fight, be sure to mention Ali’s set up for a near perfect straight right in the second round. Frazier shrugged it off, and Ali had to change his strategy. ALSO, please mention Frazier’s unique in-fighting technique in the middle rounds of ‘The Thrilla’. He closed the distance, and rubbed his hair roughly against Ali’s face to throw off Ali’s clinch and frustrate him. It’s a real ‘old school’, clever trick! Then of course, came the high drama in both corners at the end! Again, great work man!
