You've misinterpretted the reason for Fraziers' hatred of Ali. He felt betrayed by him. He had actually supported him in his Vietnam protest and even helped him out with money, etc. Obviously he needed him for a big money fight - but was a genuinely big hearted guy. During the fight promotion he felt Ali went to far with the "Uncle Tom" type comments. He never forgave him for that.

I have been thirsty for such analysis and fight breakdown since March of 1971. Although all every fight broadcast that ever has been shown is what we have repeatedly seen time and time again. No one was able to dissect each round the way you have. Was absolutely thrilled to find your version of this fight, it's the best analytics I've ever run across in my 66 years on this earth. And I'm not easily impressed, I was twenty-years-old in 1971 and the memories of this confrontation and what it meant to generations that would follow are still to this day fresh. Thank you for your intelligent prespective and insight.

My father woke us up in the middle of the night here in Germany, I was ten years old, man what great nights we had. 15 rounds in heavy weight is murder.
The only time my father would wake US up at 3am was to watch Ali! Back in Yugoslavia Ali was a workmen hero and was beloved, only Pele could compare! When he was dropped I cried for hours, we really loved Ali! Frazier was a beast from my nightmare, hahaha! Later in life, I grew to respect Frazier very much so!
@@lwmson Frazier's style was really disavantaged againts Foreman, but really avantaged againts Ali. And even against Foreman, he kept falling and came back up, his determination is crazy.
And new modern boxers always wonder why they will never be as good as the legends. Because it’s not about the points or money in boxing. It’s the heart, sacrifice, honor, and glory that made these fighters.... legendary
"Frasier smelled blood..." "a deep, shearing shot across the stomach..." I love it, David Christian. Frasier is all of us, neglected, disrespected, kicked around, always forced to prove ourselves. No one put a white light on Smokin' Joe. He had to scrap for everything he had, and when he tasted it, he drove forward, climbing uphill. Frasier won Olympic Gold AFTER making the team as an alternate. AFTER breaking his hand in the second-last fight -- only to return stateside and NOT find backers for a pro-career, until the Cloverlay men, loyal locals, stepped in when they saw the medalist working as a church sextant or janitor without enough cash for family Christmas presents. Frasier: our symbolic meatpacking-district-everyman-southpaw. A man who went to Nixon himself to get Ali's license back, just so JF could silence his critics and naysayers and prove he WAS the champion. I love both fighters. Both are extraordinary. Mt. Olympus-pantheon men, perfect opposites in so many ways, but it is great to see Smokin' Joe wobble the GOAT; in the same way, this makes the GOAT's career, proving he had the heart to dig deep, come back, often beat and sometimes survive men like JF, Foreman (no rematch), and Norton.
Frazier and Ali are imo 2 sides of the same coin, their styles, personalities and beliefs perfectly contrasted eachother, and their quarrels and disagreements with each other were thankfully squashed towards the ends of their lives. Without Frazier I don't think Ali would've reached his level of greatness, and same goes for Frazier, every one of their fights came down to 1 lucky punch, or 1 lucky evasion. Ali ended up besting Frazier, but if luck gave Frazier an extra lucky hook history would remember their score completely differently, and same goes for Foreman imo. Without Frazier losing in 2 rounds to the seemingly unstoppable force which was Foreman, Ali's victory would never have been as impactful as it was in the Rumble. Truly the golden age of boxing, and even though Ali is my favourite, he wouldn't have reached his heights without opponents like Frazier and Foreman.
Ali with supreme speed, chin and clinical punches....Frazier with a supreme stamina, pressing and left hook. Smokin Joe Frazier, the only one who had put Ali down from the stars...just to rise there alongside with his oponnent afterwards. There is no Ali without Frazier and vice versa. Maybe the biggest "heroes" in the history of the sport.
@@tabaksmozaiekvirus1715 Nah... youre trippin. Ronaldo Messi... maybe I can see that... slightly. But they don´t stand for anything rather than their fame. When Vettel had his greatest years Hamilton either was in no competition or in competition together with some other guys, like Alonso. That Left Hook. The most glorious moment in Smoking Joe's entire career. The one thing Ali could never take away from him. Nothing but Respect. Love your fight breakdowns. Quality stuff.
Thanks man. This fight was weird, because it just kept going back and forth, but very little of that had to do with any adjustments made by the other. Both men had distinct styles, they didn't want to adjust, even though they were beating the hell out of each other. They just kept coming, and the fight hinged more on willpower and mind games. Pretty much the opposite of what I normally break down haha
The Modern Martial Artist ali could be funny at times, but i've always been a little salty that he drug the nsme of a great boxer like 'smokin'' joe fraizer through the dirt
Man just imagine how insane Ali would have been had he been active from 25-28 years old. This was the biggest robbery in modern sports history, not this fight but the lost years of Ali
He trained and sparred during that time. He did not have sanctioed fights...but he was certainly active....you don't get a body to take that kind of punishment in 6 weeks of training before a fight that's for sure
@@outlaw49x10 ali didn't have a boxing license so I don't think he was allowed to spar. He spent most of his time speaking at colleges and theaters and training was the last thing on his mind
Ali had two fights that he won a year before meeting Frazier, people gotta accept that Ali wasn't the only great boxer out there and in this fight he discovered his nemesis.
Either of these two legends would clear right through most of the heavyweights of today. It's not their speed, not their strength, not their power... but their heart. Stamina. We just don't see that today.
Lee Cander they would kill all the heavyweight not most I truly believe if Muhammed Ali or Joe were fighting today at their prime they could beat AJ and Wilder And Fury all in one night with a 30 min break between fights
Prime Ali may be able to do something but prime Frazier is just too small to do anything against the big guys, he would just get slaughtered like against Foreman (who would be a small HW by today's standard).
I mean seriously, look at how many solid punches Ali took from Frazier, and he still won. He just shook them off like it was nothing. Today fighters would be done after 1 or 2 of them.
Don't get me wrong, Ali is my second favourite boxer off al time after Sugar Ray Robinson, but the way he treated Frazier and the way he talked about Joe and humiliate him, made me glad that Joe won this fight. N ot to mention that Joe agreed very easily to the rematch. Much respect to Joe!!
Yeah that’s the only thing that I didn’t like about Ali how he did Frazier! Called him a Uncle Tom worst thing a black man can call another black man!! And Frazier kids got picked on and beat up horrible what he did to Frazier!! Frazier never liked Ali after!! That’s why joe Frazier would rather die than to lose to Ali
@@merlhawkins9108 Ali was that way to Frazier in beginning because he was among the first who criticized his decision for draft..... And he would not call Ali by his chosen name..... This really irritated Ali..... When he was on verge of going to jail for standing up against draft and everyone knows how he disliked being called by his old name......
What I love so much about Joe is his body work. It's very rare for a heavyweight to throw so many body shots. The reason his famous lead left hook was so effective was because his opponents were so wary of his left hooks to the body that their guards were low to protect their ribs then suddenly the left hook cracks their temple and it's good night. What a fighter, had everything you could look for in a fighter. Ring smart. Tough. Durable. Unpredictable. Sharp. Powerful. Explosive. Unfortunate to be born when he was to be in the era of Ali and foreman, although he made them as good as they were.

This was the greatest sport event of all times. It's amazing How underrated Joe Frazier is to America. Hollywood Studios made a Million movies about boxing. Never made 1 about Frazier, ir even about this fight. C'MON, the script is ready. The most expected fight Ever. They should make the movie through Frazier's eyes, showing the nessecity he Had to win to proof that he was a real champion. Not to make a vilain out of Ali, but simply to give Joe Frazier some credit. To me, Muhammad ali and Joe Frazier sete the greatests fighters of the history of boxing. "True to his nickname, Fraizer came out smokin'." I fucking love that line, this breakdown was a pleasure to listen to while working. Hope to hear many more from you in the future.
Great stuff as always, man! As a historian AND boxing fan, I found this very impressive. When you cover the third fight, be sure to mention Ali’s set up for a near perfect straight right in the second round. Frazier shrugged it off, and Ali had to change his strategy. ALSO, please mention Frazier’s unique in-fighting technique in the middle rounds of ‘The Thrilla’. He closed the distance, and rubbed his hair roughly against Ali’s face to throw off Ali’s clinch and frustrate him. It’s a real ‘old school’, clever trick! Then of course, came the high drama in both corners at the end! Again, great work man!
@stirange Yup, Ali was kinda need the publicity for the fight to seal the deal of coming back. But badmouthing a friend on TV after he was lending you a helping hand is really uncool
Frazier was a slow starter and he always got stronger as he wore his opponents down. He might not have been as devastating as Tyson but he may have been more rugged than Mike on the receiving end.
@@chaoticchaos3978 There was literally no boxer more devastating than Tyson... Frazier is a legend and one of the best but Mike Tyson was the scariest boxer of all time. He had actually supported him in his Vietnam protest and even helped him out with money, etc. Obviously he needed him for a big money fight - but was a genuinely big hearted guy. During the fight promotion he felt Ali went to far with the "Uncle Tom" type comments. He never forgave him for that.
@yudont needtoknowmaname he also called Frazier one.. get your facts right.
@yudont needtoknowmaname you are obviously a casual fan if you haven't seen Ali call Frazier this. Do your own research, I'm not gonna waste my time finding it for you... consider it an education.
@yudont needtoknowmaname it is out there.. the same as Ali saying that white people are devil's and that the black Muslims will be rescued by a huge spaceship that is going to collect them.
Ali was quite a nasty character at that point in his life. He was openly rude and openly racist... and quite the bully.
@@mm7909 I agree, I've never understood why people treat Ali like some kind of a hero, when he was quite the contrary.
he bullied Frazier horribly, treated him in a very demeaning way, and even got the press in on it.
the "thrilla in manilla" documentary for instance, does Not paint a pretty picture of Ali's supposed heroism..

Well said. Frazier will be known as a legend forever
Wellll said......Frazier will always be an absolute inspiration.period.

But Vettel and Hamilton is just bad. When Vettel had his greatest years Hamilton either was in no competition or in competition together with some other guys, like Alonso. And when Hamilton enjoyed his biggest success so far, Mercedes was way to dominant and the only real threat was his teammate.
it was the same with Duran and SRL.

I liked the second fight better, but you sure spin a good narrative of what is definitely the most well known series of fights in any combat sports
TheMrthatdude17 The 2nd fight was the worst of the trilogy. The 3rd fight in manila was the best. This was the 2nd best fight.
